One that I can mention is the expansion of -> memory in your scanner and another is control of bank switching. Of -> course, there are many other features that come with an interface -> software/hardware package. I have a very basic (read OLD) Bearcat BC-210 (10 chan memory) scanning rcvr (SN 546##) and I'm wondering if anyone has come up with a way to interface that model for computer control ? Updating this unit to monitor more channels and other features that could be gained via software (ie search logs, tone lockout, faster rate, etc) sounds very appealing. There is PLENTY of room inside the unit for an additional PCB (3x5" if needed) and lots of room on the backplane for a DB-9/25 (etc) connector. I'd like to access the scanner CPU directly, not just stuff the keyboard matrix. The socketed chip is marked; B733-2 / ML980 / BP 7714 not sure if that is the CPU or if it's; AMI 7708CQ / 9267-002 / B-257-2 / KOREA If someone with a schematic for this could clarify that ? And perhaps hazard a guess as to why the trace to pin #18 of the ML980 chip might be cut ??? Is that a known mod ? Any info appreciated... :) Sincerely, Bruce - kb6lwn@juno.com - http://www.qsl.net/kb6lwn --- WtrGate v0.93 Unreg * Origin: GreenTree Ground Station * CM88 * 707-987-ISDN (1:2003/0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 154 SCANNERS Ref: F4C00000 Date: 04/07/98 From: FRANK CAJAR Time: 06:39pm \/To: BLAIR THOMPSON (Read 1 times) Subj: Amateur Along with all the reasons previously mentioned, one other one has merit: A number of states have laws that restrict or prohibit the use of mobile or handheld scanners... not a good thing if you happen to be traveling out of your home state. As a rule, the laws exempt licensed amateur radio operators from these restrictions. Go ahead and take the exam... even if you decide to stay no-code, there isn't a place in the country where you can't hit a 2-meter repeater or work packet from your car with a laptop. Hope this helps you make a decision. 73 and good scanning! What would you do with a ham license -> if you went through the trouble of studying and getting one? If you -> can answer that Well, here's the reason. I've heard (where?) that some states prohibit using a scanner in a car to everyone except those who have amateur licenses. Yeah, I could get the license for that reason alone, but someh that doesn't sound right to me. If I'm to get the license, it should be because I want to get the license, not for the peripheral purpose of running a scanner in a car. I just wanted to get the opinions of some hams; that's all. If I did get the license, I'd probably start with the the RS 2m handheld, unless it inspires bad reviews from you guys. If your at all interested in rf electronics and want a wealth of room and help in this field, then an amateur radio license is the way to go. But if you really don't like to experiment...why bother? There are lots of other things to keep you busy on the internet. I have been a ham for about 25 years and my interest has jumped from one aspect of the hobby to another. But there has always been that itch to experiment with electronics that amateur radio has helped to fuel. I currently make my living from electronics and I give full credit to amateur radio for getting me started AND continueing to keep me interested in my work. Just my two cents worth. Some states exempt hams from scanner laws and some states do not. There are a number of cases wherein hams have had their radios confinscated by police. The FCC has issued a federal pre-emption notice regarding scanner laws and hams, but this exemption applies ONLY to ham radios that may be used as scanners, not scanners themselves. I became a ham because I have always been fascinated with radio. It amazes me that we can take pieces of metal and glass and quartz and generate a signal that someone on the other side of the world can listen to. I like looking at radios with lots of meters and knobs and lights and I like playing with them. I've been a ham for 10 years and I still can't get over the wonderment of it all. But, your milage may vary. If you would like to discuss this further, have your sysop areafix HAM-ECHO and come on over and talk about ham radio with us there where it's more on-topic than here. ___ Blue Wave/QWK v2.12 --- * Origin: The North Star * V34/H16 (410)974-9305 (1:261/1108)
