CHEEK (Read 9 times) Subj: Family Radio Service The FRS was taken from the General Mobile Radio Service. It consists of the GMRS "interstitial" frequencies (never have quite figured out where they found that word) and the frequencies exactly .600 mhz above them. They pretty much just robbed us GMRS holders of the privacy we had on these frequencies. I dont think that the FRS is allowed as much power though. The range they advertise is a bit optimistic though. Ive done a good bit of experimenting on the adjacent Amateur radio freq's and range can be a real problem at 400+ mhz; particularly at the low power a (an) unregulated ht will have. On the flip side...the signal quality is usually wonderful. The prices I have seen so far have been totally out to lunch! They want more for those things than my 2 meter/440 ham rig. They're nuts! --- Maximus 3.01 * Origin: The AmaRad BBS (1:362/1110) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 154 SCANNERS Ref: E3J00000 Date: 03/13/97 From: CHARLES HUNTER Time: 03:08am \/To: RICH WILLBANKS (Read 9 times) Subj: external speaker RW>Also I'm concerned about damaging one or both of the >radios and/or the speaker doing it this way. I've plugged in the standard bunch of freqs, including those in the 400MHz area and listened to the various railroads in and around Atlanta. From my personal perspective (and not ment to flame anyone) but the transmissions I heard after a week absolutely bored me to tears. I'm obviously missing something here - I would very much appreciate those in this conference that listen to railroads to enlighten me in terms of what you listen for and what you get out of it. I'm not stupid, just very slow in this part of the radio spectrum. Also, I'll be traveling to Gulfport/Buloxi Mississippi the first part of April. If there is anyone that makes it a habid of lurking here from that area, I'd be happy to link up with you the first part of April. It is a series of frequencies sandwiched between the old UHF "CB" channels. FRS is low power and unlicensed. All of the radios for it are straight narrow band FM with PL tones. Sometimes you can use Y-adapters without any problems, and other times it can damage the equipment. It just depends on the devices. What I would suggest is buying an audio transformer with multiple taps on both sides. That way you can put both dovices on the same side of the transformer, and there shouldn't be any interaction bewteem them. --- SLMAIL v4.5a (#0226) * Origin: The Big Byte BBS 704-279-2295 (1:379/301) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 154 SCANNERS Ref: E3K00000 Date: 03/14/97 From: JOHN O'NEILL Time: 06:42pm \/To: ALL (Read 10 times) Subj: Bearcat 60XLT-1 Hello! But cellular is the only forbidden band that gets attention, and the only one that they physically try to lock out. Having worked at several radio stations (and visited others) in my locality, I know they monitor *each other* all the time. Indeed, I learned the frequency of one station's news cars that I didn't know, in the newsroom of another. Strange, huh? As for the Studio To Transmitter (STL) links around 900 mhz, I can't even imagine *why* that would be off-limits. It's almost always the same material that's being broadcast.... Roger, all I can say is that you have to be a railfan or model railroader - or both - in order to get your kicks that way. What we () are interested in is the whole procedure of the thing - moving hundreds of tons of machine and product form point "A" to point "B" safely and on schedule. It gives us a chance to get to know what to watch for in real life - when is the darned thing going to clear the yard and head out where we can see it - or how to operate our models. It just isn't for everyone, but then again neither is listening to digitally encrypted fed frequencies! --- COUNTERPoint 2.3 * Origin: MacRefuge * 612-426-6687 * (1:282/24) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 154 SCANNERS Ref: E3K00003 Date: 03/15/97 From: MARK KELLER Time: 09:05pm \/To: JOHN GARDNER (Read 10 times) Subj: SCANNING USA magazine do you know of any good air combat games for my pc? if so please reply --- Maximus 2.01wb * Origin: Phoenix High School BBS - Phoenix, New York (1:2608/20)
