Since playing in a MIDIFIED band with sequenced drum click track for 6 years, I've found my sense of timing to have improved to a degree where I can barely tolerate non-machine drummers. Every tom-tom roll seems to end out-of-synch and slow songs seem too fast and fast songs too slow. I love to watch the self confidence of "solid" drummers erode while playing with a click track for the first time. I've also detected the habit of following the vocal line, and speeding up during instrumental sections. BTW, I play guitar & bass. --- Opus-CBCS 1.73a * Origin: Midi-Tech BBS - Pittsburgh, Pa. I play in a power trio: guitar, drums/percussion, and I play bass/keyboards. We all sing. The guitarist and I do most of the lead vocals. (drummer sings 3 songs) I don't use many sequences live if I can help it. I do use some sampled loops (triggered from a pedal controller) that set the tempo of the song and then are reintroduced later. When I do have to use a sequence, it's either without drums, or I make sure I program a tempo track with percussion instruments that is fed into my drummers monitor. He doesn't mind it; he says it's like playing with a CD. Find what your drummer likes to hear, and then program a track for him. Usually a metronome isn't enough information. Pads, leads, and other interesting sounds don't provide the sort of rythmic bed he's(or she's) looking for. Most often, (at least in my experience) a scratch drum track is a good reference. You'll have to experiment a little to see what your particular drummer likes to hear. -fish --- SLMR 2.1a Never ask a mortician to bring back a cold one. --- GEcho 1.02+ * Origin: The FORUM BBS Ithaca, NY 607-272-1371 V.34 (1:260/701) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 151 MIDI-NET Ref: DCU00004 Date: 08/22/96 From: JOHN A. Well, as a matter of fact, I do have a few programs that I got off of a local BBS in the Denver area. Look for a program called Concerto. While I haven't used it, I have booted it up and it looks like a pretty good package. I forgot to look at your sig to see where you are calling from... Have you found any Atari BBS's where you are? They are FEW and FAR between out here, but there are a few. If you can't find it anywhere, send me some email or something, and I will see about getting it to you in the snail mail or something. There are also several programs that might still be out there for sale, if you can find a place that sells Atari stuff... don't kow the names right off hand, but they are out there, I suspect. I use one called SMPTEtrack platinum, but it's a pro package and is pretty expensive, though there is a non SMPTE version called edit tracks that can be had for about $100.00, last I checked. good luck, and have fun. Couldn't you write a CAL program to reduce the note times bit by bit thru the course of a song? I haven't tried that yet; I've only used CAL to adjust MIDI patch numbers, since for our keyboard, the old sequencer numbered one way and Cakewalk numbered the other (0-127 versus 1-128). The Cakewalk Pro for Windows manual says there is a sample CAL program, called RANDTIME.CAL, that randomizes event starting times. You might be able to modify it to reduce the times by some ever-increasing amount rather than randomly incrementing or decrementing them, as the RANDCAL program does. As I say, I'm not sure this will work, but it could be worth trying. (My time is too short to do so just now.) - A.V.
