EK> How much noise do you get out of the EMU synth when running EK> through an amp instead of to a tape? Well, you do ofcourse need a DA converter to get any signal out of it. I happen to own a DAT, so I use that one. But if you want to take it to a gig, you probably don't want to take something as expensive and fragile as a DAT machine along. But separate DA's aren't cheap aswell, as they only seem to be made for extremely rich quality freaks. (although that might be diferent where you live, it's like that in the Netherlands anyway) But if you only use it as an extra in a band, the analog out is fine. It's not real good, but it's not *THAT* bad, it creates a lot less noise than a guitar amp does. But you need a DI box or box that will make it a line level ballanced signal as near to the card's output as posible, ofcourse. EK> Or, is it possible to use this as a performance tool as well as a EK> recording, studio tool. You can use it to play live, but you need to run a sequenser as an interface to change programs, there's no program that makes it look like a stand alone sampler... I have to say that when you want to use it live you obviously need to drag your PC allong aswell, something I wouldn't like to do. And if you would buy another computer just to take the AWE to gigs, an EMU ESI32 or Akai S2000 isn't that much more expensive anymore, and a lot smaller! EK> Also being able to expand the AWE with common simms seems to me to be EK> a big advantage. You need to pair 2 8bit (32pin) SIMMs, so you either get 2, 8, 16 or 28 megs. Yes, 28. The EMU can adress 32Mb, but 4 of that is reserved for ROM, so if you put in 2 16meg simms you end up with just 28, but that's still better than just 16... (it BTW has 512Kb standard, but you lose that when you install SIMMs) Bas --- GoldED 2.50.Beta5+ * Origin: The Tramazi Parti (2:280/815.38) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 151 MIDI-NET Ref: DCA00007 Date: 08/03/96 From: BAS SCHEFFERS Time: 11:45pm \/To: KEVEN BERNARD (Read 3 times) Subj: Awe32 = good??? Or record them from real instruments, get them from samples CD's, etc. Recording them from synths is usualy no good idea, your XP-10 samples have already been broken down to save valuable memory and then put back together by a synth chip. Not to say that this is bad, you can make great sounds that way -especialy pad sounds- but the best way to get a real instrument in a box is sampling it completely, so why take a lesser quality sound as a start? Sounds from a synth that I regularly do sample are bass sounds, from real analog synths. KB> I can also modify & save samples to new samples with GS, so what?? You can modify the samples that are already in the box, like any good synth can. You can't put new in. Especialy with things like horns and guitars, nothing can beat the real thing. And that's achieved best (actualy second best ofcourse) with a sampler. Especialy for the last two sounds I named most synths *SUCK* Bas --- GoldED 2.50.Beta5+ * Origin: The Tramazi Parti (2:280/815.38) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 151 MIDI-NET Ref: DCA00008 Date: 08/05/96 From: GEORGE KOTSOPOULOS Time: 12:06pm \/To: JOHN A. As for Dell, Gateway et al, I'd be worried for them because 1980s CISC technology from Intel stands no chance against the RISC architecture of PPCP. Apple is quite alright. The transition from CISC to RISC has been a bumpy one, but in the end it's Intel and PC clone trash that'll suffer in the end. Microsoft even stated that Win'95 is just a stepping stone to NT. And, NT has already been demonstrated on a PPCP machine which was simultaneously running the MacOS. With synths of today, in order for them to emulate, for example, a piano, samples of it are made and stored in ROM. (But, you probably already knew that =') With acoustic modelling, complex mathematical functions are used to mimic the timbre of an acoustic instrument in every aspect. Korg's Prophecy synth is one that uses physical modelling (check out the pitch-bend tracking on any of the brass patches. I particularly like the French Horn patch). Well, the problem today is that you need very powerfull DSPs (computing power) to emulate then nuance of an acoustic instrument and that's why all acoustic/physical modelling synths are either monophonic or duophinic. The Korg OASYS is has a maximum of 118 voices of polyphone. But, the more complex the instrument, the less the polyphony. It's like were back in the 1980s complaining about 8-voice synths all over again! Only this time, the sounds are there, but the polyphony is lacking. Unfortunately, the Korg OASYS lists for $18,000US. And, even I wouldn't invest that amount of cash in a synth. --- QScan/PCB v1.17b / 01-0182 * Origin: Balmy Beach Toronto 416-690-9641 (1:250/422) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 151 MIDI-NET Ref: DCB00001 Date: 08/05/96 From: GEORGE KOTSOPOULOS Time: 02:01am \/To: WILLIS MORRISON (Read 3 times) Subj: 2 da dump -> I agree with you on this, somewhat, too. And, at about $90,000 less, he was REALLY freaked by the O2R. I've just been reading a lot about IEEE 1394 (FireWire) and DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) and I'm sure that a lot of gear is going to have FireWire support. Plus, I think that DATs day is coming to an end. DVD is just so amazing, and couple that with FireWire...WOW! This technology race just never ends, eh?
