But its a good interface, and I've tried a few others. The bottom line is that for $600 + the software you can do everything; without any cards, IRQ settings, jumpers, or whatever. It will run in DOS, but lacks the nice graphical features it has when run under Windows. Even in DOS, you need at least Hercules graphics capabilities. In fact, it is the program that was responsible for me switching to Windows, after resisting for so long. If your only reason for remaining in DOS is your lack of computer power, maybe I could help. I find myself with a bunch of left over 386SX/33 motherboards. One of these and a couple of memory modules would bring you up to Windows 3.1 capabilities. If you have a fairly standard 286 clone, replacing the motherboard is not too much of a project. And, the price is right - free to the needy. Windows 3.1 will run in mono in Hercules mode. As the topic line states, I'm trying to find a good source of some @#$^@$ awesome orchestral samples. The two newer Roland boxes (Orchestra and String Ensemble rackmount versions of the expansion card series for the JV-1080 and such) are both quite good, and quite convincing as a 'live orchestra' feel. Besically, I'd like to write orchestral music, and have it sound as close to 'the real thing' as possible. My Roland SC-88 is nice, but it sure doesn't convince a listener that it's not synthesized. :) As it is, I may have to consider the sampler route, although I simply can't afford the tremendous cost of such. Lots of PC sound cards are sporting the ability to hold plenty of RAM for sampling purposes, and I might consider it if one finally comes out that's really clean. (None of this SB32/AWE crud with its hissing and noisemaking.) Then, of course, get myselt some nice CD-ROM libraries of orchestral sounds. :) Any suggestions from the gurus, guys? :) ... I'm not really one to advise you on which sound card is best for *music,* but I will tell you that I've heard and played around with a SoundBlaster AWE32, and the quality of its audio is quite impressive. In case you don't know, it uses an EMU 32-voice Advanced Wave Effects processor, has on-board chorus and reverb, and comes with a fair amount of software (which may or may not be useful to you). You can put up to 28 meg of RAM on it -- it uses regular PC SIMMS -- and it has a few "pro" features, such as the ability to bypass the on-board DAC to, for instance, connect it directly to a DAT machine. I was pretty impressed with the board. The SCC-1 sounds like the kind of thing I'm looking for... I was originally looking for an "external" module (with a MIDI-IN port) but it is starting to look like these are just out of my price range, period. Thanks for explaining about GS, too; I was familiar with GM but wasn't sure if GS was compatible. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I *MIGHT* be interested in your offer... I'm kinda short on money right now (I'm currently unemployed) and am looking into other products. I *do* have a few questions: (a) Can I use the soundcard under DOS? Windows drivers are useless to me. Does the MPU-401 interface control the on-board synth; i.e., can any program that supports the MPU-401 standard coax sound out of the beast? (b) Is there any on-board RAM, to allow for user-uploaded samples? (c) IF I was interested in buying the card, and IF it was still available when I had some money, WOULD you be able to ship it to Canada? Thanks Ben... talk to you later.
