VF> VF> AVOID POWERBARS. I have seen too many folk just die eating the VF> stupid things. BA> Seriously, you have actually seen people die from eating Powerbars? BA> I am amazed that something that dangerous is allowed to be on the BA> market. I've tried a few and haven't died yet but I have wanted to kill after struggling to get the ^(*%$^)( things open. I find that they are just so sticky that I need scissors to open them and then I have to peel them away from the packaging. I gave up buying them after doing that couple of times. The taste was okay but there's just no way I could eat one and ride at the same time. RG> I'll be there this year and the next and the next and the next .... Neat! As you probably know by now, the race I was going to run - 62k offroad - was cancelled for this year. I've picked a substitute a week later, but it just won't fill the same space in my heart. Consequently, I'm going to tour to the Alberta border in a month. An' then, if I have the time, I'm going to try and get into an _offroad_ rando. Seems like the organizers have a very neat idea: people arrive, and those who think they are the slowest, go first. An hour later, the next batch go, and then the next an hour after that. The idea is that the expert-types do the route in three hours, but leave _last_ so that everyone arrives at the same point at around the same time! I thought it was a neat idea. --- Maximus/2 3.01 * Origin: Warm Fire, Hearty Helpings - Fox n' Dragon Inn (1:340/44) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 150 BIKE NET Ref: F4E00001 Date: 04/07/98 From: VERN FAULKNER Time: 07:54pm \/To: STEVEN MCFARLANE (Read 1 times) Subj: CYCLE FOOD re: powerbars - SM> from the packaging. I find sometimes that if I'm just going for a 3 hour or so mountain bike ride, I'm not always prepared days in advance. In fact I usualy don't know I'm going until the morning of the day that I go. So, what do you do on such short notice. I've tried basing that days food on high sugar foods, but that just gives me a quick boost, so then 45 minutes into the ride I need more energy. I try drinking a lot, but that just gives me a stomache ache. This isn't just a problem for me, but my friends as well. So, i was wondering, any suggestion for those last minute, medium length bike rides. Also, what's the deal with toe-clips. I've been considering buying some for a long time. But, the people I know that have them always are geting there feet caught in them, and get twice as hurt as they would otherwise. But, I also notice them to be useful for geting up and over roots and trees. So, what's the deal, are they for the good, or the bad? I'm planning to try an assortment when I get back to Toronto this summer. I've been snacking on something called a CalorieMate Bar for the last few years. Again, I find them difficult to eat while riding and they have the texture of chalk but I think they are slightly healthier than the chocolate I would normally snack on at work. The numbers are: 400 Kcal, 8.7g protein, 22.4g fat, 41.0g carbo plus assorted minerals and vitamins They keep for about a year in the packaging and I normally have a bunch of them stashed as emergency rations in my earthquake bag. Since I've moved about two years ago, I haven't really been able to really get out and explore, so I just went out and got myself thoroughly LOST! Ended up riding about 25 miles. I haven't even done that kind of distance in quite a while. Finally, I found a familiar road again, and got back home. I was surprised at how well I held up. Especially since it was windy as all git-out that day. I wasn't even really sore the next coupla days, either. I guess I still have some legs, after all! I found a way to solve the 'no time to ride because of the kid' problem. She used to ride with me in a kid carrier, but now she's outgrown it, so I'm going to get one of those thingies that hook onto the seatpost, and looks like the rear end of a kid-bike, with an arm coming over my rear wheel to hook on. Ever seen those? If so, what's your opinion of its actuall usefulness/safety/etc.? I've talked to her about them and showed her one, and she's game for it. Maybe I'll get my legs and wind back, after all, if I can keep her interested long enough. Good talking at ya!
