Well until next month then. It really isn't that complicated, especially in a low-traffic, mostly on-topic echo of this nature. In fact, moderating something like this is a breeze. :) The only technical stuff is making sure that a BBS batchfile automatically posts (a) the rules, and (b) an ELIST update once a month. The latter is so that the echo remains on the backbone, and thus connected to the universe - or at least, the rest of FIDO. For this reason, I always figure it best if a BBS operator is also a moderator,or at the very least, a moderator runs their own point system: this prevents echos from being suddenly out-of date and subject to removal from the ELIST. I s'pose I'll find the rules I whipped up for HOCKEY and tailor 'em for here.... for either my use, or someone else's. --- Maximus/2 3.01 * Origin: Warm Fire, Hearty Helpings - Fox n' Dragon Inn (1:340/44) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 150 BIKE NET Ref: F3Q00002 Date: 03/19/98 From: VERN FAULKNER Time: 09:09pm \/To: ALL (Read 1 times) Subj: Possible Rules - reactions? Here's a quikie set of rules, pillaged from something I wrote for elsewhere. The following would also be - pretty much in whole - the rules for the MTN_BIKE echo, which is also in danger of extinction.... Thoughts? Comments? Letter bombs? RULES OF THE INTERNATIONAL CYCLING ECHO Reader's digest of rules: - Be nice. Personal insults are not acceptable. - Have fun. - no high-ascii, ansi codes, or big signature files. BORING LONG VERSION OF RULES 1) PURPOSE: The cycling enthusiast's Echo (Tag BIKENET) is for the discussion of all aspects of cycling, be it on or off-road, touring, commuting, racing, or occasional recreation use. Discussion on any degree of activity is acceptable, from occasional commuting to high-end racing. Discussion of hardware, technique, cycling celebreties, trails, trail building and maintenance, touring destinations: all are acceptable. Discussion of environmental impacts is also acceptable, but only to a degree. 2) CONDUCT: There shall be no insults of other users. Given that some fans are somewhat sensitive about their teams, posters are reminded that some jests are all in good fun, and to respond appropriately. Insults directed at a poster (called "Flames") are not acceptable. a) Only a moderator shall deal with off-topic material. b) Moderator-type posts will be made obvious, so as to differentiate from regular posts by such individuals. 3) PROHIBITED: BBS ads and commercial postings for any service not related to cycling. Those entries related to cycling may be deemed off-topic upon review. Also off-topic are excessive diatrabes for or against mandatory helmet laws. 4) CONTENT: Due to the nature of some mail-handling software, high-bit ASCII is not permitted in this echo at this time. Those with SIGs are reminded that this is an international echo: some folk collect the echo via long-distance and others may live in areas where per-minute charges for phone connections exist. Consequently, posters are requested to avoid long post-message signature files. (SIGS). a) Those persons using handles as part of their normal BBSing are requested to append their real name to their messages. b) Conversations which might best be held in a private forum, or which stray from being on-topic are best moved to NETmail. (Ask your sysop about netmail access.) c) Do not overquote.... grumbles will occur if you add "I agree!" after quoting 20 lines of text. (Control-Y usually deletes unwanted lines in most editors/offline readers.) But, on the other hand: d) It is requested that you add at least a representative portion from the message to which you're responding. This "quote" will aid others in recalling the thread, or making responses. 5) WARNINGS: The BIKENET echo exists on a three-strikes principle. Warnings will be sent via PRIVATE NETMAIL, or internet e-mail if addresses are made known in a post. Consequently - JUST BECAUSE THERE IS NO OBVIOUS ACTION BEING TAKEN IN PUBLIC, readers should not assume that the moderator(s) are having a nap. 6) DISTRIBUTION: The content of the BIKENET echo may not be distributed to any other mail-handling network without permission of the moderator(s). 7) QUESTIONS: Regarding moderation, complaints and request for discipline may be directed to the moderator(s): FIDO: Vern Faulkner, 1:340/44. BBS: Fox and Dragon Inn, 1-250-472-2175: Victoria, B.C., Canada. INTERNET: vern@widow.spydernet.com or vern.faulkner@f44.n340.z1.fidonet.org 8) RULES: Suggestions for changes to the rules may also be made in private netmail at the above addresses. a) Changes to the rules will in general adhere to a democratic concept. In short, what the readers/posters want, they'll get. --- Maximus/2 3.01 * Origin: Warm Fire, Hearty Helpings - Fox n' Dragon Inn (1:340/44) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 150 BIKE NET Ref: F3S00000 Date: 03/22/98 From: SOUTHERN STAR Time: 05:54am \/To: ALL (Read 1 times) Subj: Expired Listing Hello. In preparation for the first World Cup event in Napa, California (MMar 28-29), Canada's mountain bikers are hitting all of the top events in North America. Still to come is the Sea Otter Classic (Mar 18-22) in Monterey, California: where riders of all disciplines - mountain, road and track - will test themselves against an international roster of riders. "Training in Victoria throuhout the winter not only provides the riders with year-round access to the roads ant trails, but here at the National Cycling Center they havee access to other services and programs like supervised weight training and psychological testing," says head coach Yury Kasharin. "They are very well-prepared for this season and their hard work is definately paying off with their impressive results of the last two weeks." In mountain biking action, Vancouver native Alison Sydor kickstarted her season with a repeat win at the Cactus Cup in Phoenix, Arizona. Sydor, a triple world champion and Olympic medallist won all four stages of the event. Teamates Lesley Tomlinson (also of Vancouver), Melanie McQuiad of Victoria, and Hamilton's Sue Palmer followed in third, eighth, and ninth places respectively. On the men's side, Victoria native Andreas Hestler rode to a fourth-place finish, followed by Chris Sheppard (eighth) and Neil Grover (eleventh.) Meanwhile, In Hawaii, another well-known Victoria native - Roland Green - won three of five stages at the Hawaiian Mountain Tour to finish a mere 21 seconds behind overall winner Jerome Chiotti, a former World Cup champion from France. Seamus McGrath finished in seventh place, while Crhissy Reddeen placed third in the women's division. A week earlier, Seamus McGrath and Chris Sheppard finished one-two at the El Diablo Baja Challenge in Mexico. At the season opener for road riders, the Redlands Classic in Redlands California, double olympic medallist Clara Hughes placed fourth after a tumultuous weekend of events. Hughes had been the leader going into the second-last stage when she lost the lead due to a mechanical mishap. She redeemed herself, however, by winning the final stage and bringing her overall position from 14th place to just 37 seconds shy of the eventual winning time. Eight Canadian women placed in the top 20: Leigh Robson (fifth), Alison Sydor (sixth), Linda Jackson (seventh), Supe Palmer (eleventh), Lesley Tomlinson (eighteenth), Melanie McQuaid (ninteenth), and Chrissy Reddon (twentieth.) The CCSD National Cycling Center is the training headquarters for the Canadaian National Cycling Team, and a hub of a series of national, provincial and community programs. --- Maximus/2 3.01 * Origin: Warm Fire, Hearty Helpings - Fox n' Dragon Inn (1:340/44)
