It is easy to do and the RG> expense is not very much. It would be much more comfortable during RG> long distances than your present set up. There are a few reasons. First, I find the straight bar with bar ends and Lizard Skin bar end grips to be fairly comfortable. I've owned bikes with dropped bars before and find that I can't use the drops all that much. I wear glasses and when I'm hunkered down, I end up looking through the top of my frames which is not safe for me. Second, I'm not sure of the time and hassle involved. Changing the bar would all have to be done in Japanese and I would need: - the bar (and stem?) - tape - new brake levers and shifters; I've gotten used to the GripShift system with the shift mechanism near my hand and want a combined brake/shifter and will not go back to shifters on the down tube. There's one called the Shimano STI that is compatible with a triple chainring. I have no idea what that would cost here, given that parts can cost up to twice what they sell for in North America. Labour is also not included in the estimate. For what it might cost me, it might be easier to sell the old bike and just buy a new one. OTOH, asking my Bike Shop Guy what it might cost is free. The next time I go in, I'll ask him for an estimate. I'll keep you posted. Tailwinds to you, Steve ... Think a lot more along the lines of what they ride in China or other countries like that and you'll have a good idea. They're not light or beautiful but they are cheap and work with a minimum of maintainance. Nobody races them or rides them off-road. They're just transportation. RG> The only problem though as you have RG> pointed out would be frame size. Perhaps looking in bikeshops to see RG> if they have an old model still around that you could get for RG> cheaper than brand new. Placing adds in the newspaper indicating the RG> frame size you need could generate some possibilities. Nope. I've looked through a number of catalogues for that type and absolute biggest size is a 27 inch. I need a 28 or 29. I'm about 6'2" tall (188cm or so) and am much taller than most of the people here. There is no market at the moment for large-frame bikes. My "good bike", the Trek, had to be specially-ordered and the shop clerk said I got the last one in the country. RG> As for the RG> long seatpost that you are using. It does not sound very safe. It RG> would be better that you get a bike of your size. Last resort would RG> be ordering directly from a dealer or have a shop order a frame for RG> you. As long as you do not ask for a racing light type of metal it RG> shouldn't cost too much. I've used an extender for 4 years and never had a safety problem. They have to be replaced every year or so because they bend backwards a little but it is the only option I have available to me right now. But I agree with you, if you feel real strong about a situation like that, do take action, whatever you think is right, but I doubt very much you'll be able to improve the behaviour of them hoons by trying to stand over them.....unless you want to declare war on them..... grrrrrrr RG>As for my chain problem, I brought it to the shop and the RG>mechanic told me he did not think the slippage was due to RG>my brake lever (the ratchet system), but he could not RG>undrstand how it could happen.
