But > you can't > beat biking in the winter! <:!D > --- We're now having temps. in the 0 - 19 degree F. range (whatever that works out to in C?) Got cowardly today and drove to work, but, since parking is $4 per day, I'm going to have to bite the bullet and bike Tuesday. When the temp gets into this range, I've been having an on and off again problem with my shifters-- they seem to get "mushy"-- that is, they seem to have trouble sensing that I am trying to shift, and when they do, instead of clicking (they are "Rapid Fire" style), they sort of ooze from one extreme to the other. What's annoying is that, when I finally get to someplace light (the joys of a 6a.m. starting time at work!), I frequently find that I am in some strange gear combination-- such as in the smallest gear in front and the largest in back, or vice-a-versa. I can't imagine that this is doing my chain any good! Any low (or, better still, no) cost solutions? Thank you for posting that. LR>Now I know that mail can get through. The problem is mail getting out. LR>I gave a short reply to your message there, but since I think there's a LR>good chance you won't get it, I'll write here instead where I know LR>things are more predictable. If you get that message, tell me. LR>Otherwise I'm going to ask the sysop to check it out. No, didn't get your msg in the Travel echo, there where only two msges in it. A very quiet echo. Let you know when a msg from you arrives at the Travel echo. LR>I don't get the bike and Travel echos on the same BBS, so I can't change LR>the area and move the message using my offline reader. I have to do LR>this from memory. And at our age, well...... :-) At the moment I'm subscribing to three BBSes, took me a while to find one, that is reliable, and not more time off line then on. But now I'll drop the others, having found one I'm happy with....:)) LR>Around here bikes, walkers, and inline skaters all use the same paved LR>trails. We all have to learn to share, but it can be a problem when LR>it's busy. Many bikers go top speed and that can be dangerous. I had Yes some of the bike ways are shared by walkers and bikes don't know about inline skaters, not too many around at the moment.... LR>my 4 year old grandson out for a ride earlier this fall, and he isn't LR>yet fully aware of the "rules of the road." A couple times he almost LR>got it by a fast bike and after that I decided that isn't the place for LR>him just yet. You really have to be defensive out there at times and LR>let others know of your presence. Best times are during the week in the LR>late afternoon. That's why the kids like to stick to the foot paths, even so there is a bike lane along the road. It's safer for them. Cars around here are still not really aware of the bike on the road. That goes for push bikes as well as motor bikes. One reason why my bike, as well as I, are very visible with colours easily noticed. LR>I haven't heard of the Pacific Crest Trail for hiking. But the national LR>parks *are* nice for hiking. This fall we went to the Grand Canyon LR>Nat'l Park. Their trail is 5000 feet down, and 5000 feet back up. LR>. Pretty rough. And would you believe that some have tried it on LR>a mtn bike??? They had to post a sign that it was prohibited. Some are really keen mountain bikers, never thought they would have a go riding down and up the Grand Canyon. We where there in spring 1995, there was still a bit of snow about. We walked down to Indian Garden a very enjoyable walk. Coming to think of it, this particular trail, Bright Angel, if I remember rightly, must be about six foot wide, and well maintained. Very inviting to a mountain biker....hehehe LR>There are some nice long distance bike trails here as well. Missouri, I LR>believe, has one called the Katy trail that runs the length of the LR>state. I'm not sure if it's complete yet, but I understand they do have LR>the land. The state of Wisconsin has trails that go almost the width of LR>the state. I think they are the king of states for trail system. They LR>aren't paved, however. The northern part of Wisconsin appears to be a very wild part, with many forests and reserves. Seems to be not to far away from where you are living?.....well on the map anyway:) LR>Our bike club here is having a hike on a bike trail New year's Day. LR>It's supposed to be warm so I think I'll go. They've done this in local LR>forest preserves as well, and then there's always a stop for breakfast LR>or lunch afterward as a group. It's fun. Used to be only biking and LR>skiing for the club and now they've introduced other activities. You certainly can have a lot of fun and exercise belonging to this bike club. I for myself don't belong to a bike club. But now and again I see a group of riders and would say, they belong to one. As I'm not working any more, I have the time and opportunity to do things, when not so many are around and when it pleases me. One thing I'll do though, is to have a look into one of the bike mags, to see what's available.....the time has come, when I have to invest into a new one. Had to replace the six sprockets as well as the chain again, but now I realise, that the whole drive train seems to be pretty well worn, and I just don't like it when it's not working quietly and reliably. I ride between 5-6 thousand miles a year Yikes!! When do you drive a car?? :-) I would like to use my bike a lot more than I do, but traffic here is awful, it seems there's always some kind of construction going on, and I dislike the exhaust fumes. I need to get away from here when I ride. My husband and I drive to meet others in the club where it's not so congested. There was an effort at one time to get our commuter train service to allow bikes, but it never happened. That would have been nice as it goes into some small towns where biking is friendlier. What do you use your bike for? Do you commute or just ride and ride and ride?? :-) It's winter here now and there's little/no biking going on. There isn't any snow at the moment for skiing, either, so the club gets together and hikes in a forest preserve or on a trail. At least it gets us together and keeps us moving.
