My mountain bike is also unsuspended as it's main duty is also for work commuting. Still an unsuspended mountain bike takes railroad crossings far better then any road bike and makes a better urban commuter. Between my home and work there is a very rough double set of rail road tracks crossing a 35 mile per hour road. The section is so bad that most people who know the road slow to 10 mile per hour to cross them. When I would come to work on my road bike I hated those tracks, now I love them and hope they never get fixed. I get a full sprint to go over them now, Cars hate to see bicycles going faster than them so they often try to pass me there. I give them all the room they need as they bottem out on the tracks and I float over them. Urban bike commuting is lots of fun but very diferent from training type rides on quiet back roads. Is your commute city or rural? By the way the city of Allentown has bike licence stickers. My mountain bike is 667 and the road bike is 666. John O'Neill ... Any other good tricks that might last and be more brake-friendly? WD40 shouldn't be used on bikes, especially on the wheel rims. The noise is probably more a function of WHERE you bought your bike than the bike itself. The brake pads are probably not cantered correctly. They should toe in so that the leading edge contacts the rim followed by the rest of the pad. The "professionals" at toys'r'us typically don't know how to set up a bike properly. Sometime properly adjusted brakes will squeal. Hair spray on the rims sometimes will correct the problem. Should I stand up or gear down? Also it will be DW> a time trial rather than group racing. From the local race, I suspect DW> I'll have to average better than 19 mph to place in Raleigh. Definitely breathe. And definitely wear clothes. Deep regular breathing supplies more oxygen more efficiently, which is the object. Training is generally daily, with alternate easy and hard days. Something like Monday, Wednesday, Friday - easy rides; Tuesday and Thursday - hard ride (e.g., intervals); Saturday - long ride at race speed; and Sunday - intermediate ride at race speed. Experienced time trialers warm up on a wind trainer before they start, so they can start off warmed up. The pacing probably depends on the length of the time trial. But time trials tend to be pretty much all out efforts, maintaining effort just under the anaerobic treshhold until the last few seconds and then going for broke in a sprint. The main thing is not to run out of steam before the finish. The 52/13 is way too big a gear. It is for going downhill with a tail wind. For hills you need to get down on the small chainring and big freewheels so that you can keep spinning at 90 rpm. Do as much of the hills sitting as possible. Standing works for short periods and is really tiring. Those gears are there for a purpose. Use them. If you learn to spin rather than hammer, you will discover that you can get more speed with less effort expended at around 90 rpm; and that is very important in racing. Several pair of good cycling shorts, a few good jerseys, a few pair of cycling socks, a couple of pair of cycling shoes, a pair of cycling gloves, a pair or cycling glasses and a helmet should suffice for training and the race. BTW, don't save anything new until the day of the race. Do at least one race like ride before the race with everything like it will be the day. (This includes power drinks and food you may want to use.) Get your surprizes before the race not at it. === ==== = _@ Ken Peck + _ \<._ ========= (_)/ (_) Kenneth_Peck@clr.com ... + + + This tagline is nailed down to prevent theft. + + + --- Blue Wave/QWK v2.10 --- WILDMAIL!/WC v4.12 * Origin: Texas Phoenix (1:130/1017.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 150 BIKE NET Ref: DCB00004 Date: 08/06/96 From: KEN PECK Time: 10:02pm \/To: DANIEL LYNES (Read 5 times) Subj: Cheap toysrus bike qs.. -=> Quoting Daniel Lynes to Joe Kanowitz <=- JK> call it.)
