Is that someone who might depend on a bike for basic transportation? Or is that someone who has all the latest Campy components? Millions of Chinese who ride their bikes EVERYWHERE are, IMHO, serious cyclists, and most of them ride 1-speed bikes! Your definition of "serious" is not necessarily everyone else's. Please don't take this a "flame". I'm just trying to point out the fact that not everyone is on the same level with respect to cycling, nor do they all do it for the same reasons. There was an older fellow in our bike club who toured the Swiss Alps on a three speed in the 1930's. Even today many people rely on them to commute to work. Thanks and take care.....Kim Greetings from Calgary Kim. I'm not sure if this is worthwhile advice or not but you might want to consider buying Dept store bikes in PEI which may be cheaper than renting. Here, in Calgary, you can buy a bike at Canadian Tire for just slightly over $100. Now if you were motoring to PEI, I'd suggest taking your own bikes. I'd love to tour PEI by bike. Since our Depends on how long you're going to be out there...if you're going to be out there, and using them every single day you're there, but will be there for about a month, or so, it would probably be cheaper to take your bikes with you. If you're only going to be there for a week, or two, it would more than likely be cheaper to rent the bikes. Here, in Greater Vancouver, it costs between $35 and $55 per day to rent a bike, depending on who you rent it from, what type of bike it is, and how old the bike is. It also then is an additional $200-$500 deposit per bike, depending on what shop you rent it from. I would imagine these prices are somewhat steep in comparison to PEI, as everything's more expensive on the west coast (with the exception of rent...rent is about the same here, as Toronto.) Not only do some of them ride on the wrong side of the road, some of them also can't make up their minds which side of the road they're going to stay on, or which direction they're going to head in. Another swift one I've seen, is where the cyclist won't even look, before jumping a green light...in Vancouver area, quite often you'll find the cars rushing the remainder of the yellow light, and even rush the end of the red light, just before the other direction turns green, because some yutz wouldn't let them make their left turn even on a yellow light. Jumping the green out here, can prove to be fatal. Now, I can see why so many people out here wear helmets. However, pulling stupids like they do pull, a helmet won't help much...their brains just won't get splattered as far. :( JO> This helps (if only a small degree) on recovering stolen JO> bicycles by having the bicycle serial number and other info Most cities in Canada usually required you to pay about $2 for a bicycle license, which got your bike registered with the police, and also got you a license plate for it. They have since done away with the license plates, but you can still get a police identification number stamped on the undercarriage of the frame (directly below the crankshaft) for free.
