In talking to people riding bikes as I walk, I am told over and over that they bought bikes far more complex than they ever needed! Many never use the multiple gear possibilities. There are numerous complaints about keeping the caliper breaks adjusted and functioning correctly. Many have told me they would go back to more basic bikes with wider tires and coaster breaks if they were to buy again. .......Just some observations! I have made contact with Schwinn and Huffy (They both have coaster brake bikes with internal Shimano 3 speed hubs). I am looking for the address of Shimano (bicycle brochures do not cover cog and chain ring sizes) so I can extend my inquiries. I'm also looking for the address of the Murry Bicycle Co. Just having had prostate surgery (TURP), I have a few months left before I have to make my choice. I don't mind paying a little extra when I know what I am getting for the difference. ..................Again many thanks for all the help I've been getting.....! --- Maximus/2 3.01 * Origin: Nerve Center - Source of the SPINAL_INJURY echo! You made several good points in your post. But the truth is there are alot of poor cyclist out there. Bike lanes are not always a good solution and those who would be smart enough to take a bike safety class on there own merritt are probably smart enough not to ride on the wrong side of the road in the first place. To register my bike in the city I live in is one dollar for two years. This helps (if only a small degree) on recovering stolen bicycles by having the bicycle serial number and other info on file at the police station. Let's get real, no state I know of is getting rich on motercycle and moped licenses, do you think they would charge much more for a bicycle? John O'Neill ... Just thought I'd let you know, but I have an original Bianchi just like yours. Your shifters are definitly not original, nor are your cranks and bottom bracket. The factory originals were all medium grade Shimano. Personally, I'd leave the bike as is and try to seel it and purchase something better or at least with suitable and matching components. I picked mine up from a local racer for next to nothing, and after riding it for a bit that's exactly what these jap machines are worth. The frame has soo much flex (don't worry about spreading the stays for a 7 cog free wheel, the frame is made of rubber) that the decal should say "Linguini". My Bianchi has been relegated to the role of a spare and or foul weather machine. It now takes a lot to pry me off of my all Campag equiped Tomasini (purchased used for 00). --- Maximus 3.01 * Origin: The Keyboard BBS - Calgary, AB (1:134/67) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 150 BIKE NET Ref: DBE00005 Date: 07/08/96 From: DENNIS FARKAS Time: 10:50pm \/To: DAVE HUGHES (Read 4 times) Subj: Re: 3 Speed hub Rather than use an obsolete, and near impossible to repair piece of equipement like a 3 speed hub, I have a different solution. Go with 2 speeds instead. You could use a standard double chainring crank with a front deraileur and an old 5 speed hub. Instead of mounting a rear deraileur you would only need a simple spring loaded lever with a single jockey wheel (to retain chain tension). You would have in effect a 2speed bike (low and high gears) with a very simple gear system with the added advantage of being able to move the chain to a different rear cog (albeit mannualy) when conditions dictate. --- Maximus 3.01 * Origin: The Keyboard BBS - Calgary, AB (1:134/67) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 150 BIKE NET Ref: DBE00006 Date: 07/09/96 From: BARRY AUSTERN Time: 01:27pm \/To: DANIEL LYNES (Read 4 times) Subj: A TICKET FOR WHAT?? -> BA> that it says only "The Department of the Treasury 1789" rather -> BA> than the Latin for "Seal of the Treasury of North America." -> So, if it was the Seal of the Treasury of North America, I wonder why -> Canadians and Mexicans never saw any of that money? Hello All! I am looking for tips on buying a bike. Things like what to look for, how it fits, what style, brands, and everything else would be helpful. I am 41 and in need of some shaping up . I hate the word excersize and I love two wheeling (motorcycles.) So a bike is the right idea. I will mostly ride pavement and light trails (walking trails). Comfort is a big plus. Money is not really my first criteria although something in the 250-400 range would be appropriate for my budget. Thanks for any help you can offer.
