I stopped by the county courthouse and looked up bicycle regs in the Massachusetts state code. surprise! A lot has changed since I started cycling. RG> Don't reflectors work only if a direct source of RG> light is pointing at them? That's the way it looks to me at night. The other thing I've seen suggested, but haven't yet tried (for doing night riding) is to clean the wheel rims (very thoroughly) and apply reflective tape on the the rim between the spokes. That way, cars behind you will get reflections from the tape when they don't from the reflectors installed on wheels. I think it would be effective & thought about doing it when I was riding home from the computer lab every night after dark. RG> In the day time? As the officers already pointed out, that's irrelevant. Apparently according to the highway code, he should have had them. In Mass, bicycles are supposed to have bells installed on the handlebars and those under 12 are supposed to always ride helmetted. I seldom see either. Reflectors are cheaper than tickets, not to mention hospitals or funerals. ;) RG> By other RG> bikes???? At night, with a good light, yeah, another cyclist @ 90 degree angle will spot reflectors at a distance. Not that it matters. When I'm riding at night I try to be continually alert to people wearing dark clothing on my side of the road coming toward me. Moonlit nights are particularly dangerous... people out walking. He must have been wearing a helmet & they had a quota to fill? I've never been stopped by officers, so I haven't had any experience dealing with them in one of those situations. I'll be interested to hear what the bike officers have to say about that article. ... Hello All! Thought some of you might like to know some interesting news. Lately here in Vancouver area, the city of Vancouver has implemented some changes that are tending to tee off automobile motorists. One of the main bridges leading into the downtown core from the west side here, has been totally restricted as a test pilot for the summer to cyclists, roller bladers and pedestrians, in an effort to curb vehicular traffic. Also, a number of streets now have an entire lane dedicated to bicycle traffic. Vancouver and area has been known for a number of years as being a large environmentally aware community. I think this bold new step needs some congratulations to the city planners. I don't drive a car, but I do walk a lot, and when I have a bicycle, ride about 100k per week. Without a bold step like closing the bridge to vehicular traffic, cyclists are forced to use the sidewalk, as the lanes are so narrow, and the cars so fast, that it's extremely dangerous to ride on the street (the speed limit I believe on the bridge is 60 or 70k/h, when vehicular traffic is allowed.) Hopefully more communities will follow suit, so that we can cut down on air pollution. One city I can think of offhand that could benefit from this immensely, is Toronto, Ontario. Their pollution factor is higher than Vancouver's, but because of the mountains here, the pollution seems worse than Toronto. I've never kept a log. I commute daily, weather permitting, from around mid-April to around mid-November (avoiding Chicago's cold, wet, miserable weather at the beginning and ending of the season). The only thing I do is sort of keep track of total miles. My bike computer reads 157 miles and I have about 75 miles without the computer (I tend to take it off when the bike is parked at the train station and sometimes I forget to put it back on; and at the start of the season this year I couldn't find the old one and put on about two weeks of intermittent commuting before I finally decided I wouldn't find the old one until after I bought a new one, so I did--it didn't work, the old one still hasn't shown up). My rides include a couple of recreational rides, about 16 miles on a hot Sunday with 25+ mph wind in my face most of the way (the total ride was about 32 miles, but I drove the sag for the last half; I was pooped) and a 35 mile volunteers preview of the Boulevard Lakefront Tour of the Chicagoland Bike Federation (on Sunday, when the actual ride comes around, I'll be a course marshal standing on a corner all morning!). ben@twty.chi.il.us Benjamin H.
