DM> What's the "Song of the South"? Is it from a movie? All I know is DM> that it's Disney, and that it's said nobody can buy it on Video or DM> CD for a reason unknown to me. "Song of the South" is a Disney Feature that includes live action, animation, and composite scenes. It (re)tells the story of Uncle Remus and *his* stories about Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, Brer Bear, and all their friends. Probably the most famous part of the film is the song, "Zip-A-Dee-Do-Dah". It also provided the storyline for Splash Mountain. Disney has been reluctant to re-release this film in the United States for reasons of "political correctness" or lack thereof. Remus was a slave, and seemed happy with his life. Disney, apparently, is concerned that this would suggest that the company endorsed that Most Peculiar Institution (slavery), and bring down boycotts and public outcry. Most of the Disniphiles I know think this is silly, but that's how American business works in the last quarter of the twentieth century. The most recent rumor is that Disney plans to have James Earl Jones record an introduction to the film that will place it in the proper historical context, and it is hoped, defuse any bad publicity that might otherwise attach. Strong rumor is that it will be released on video (NTSC) in the U.S. Weak, but encouraging rumor is that it will first be released theatrically. I, for one, can't wait! Disney fans in Europe may have to not wait a little longer, but not very much. ()_() (_) Bruce (rumormonger extrordinaire) Metcalf ___ OLX 2.1 TD What do you want me to do? It's a full length Disney feature that has some live action as well as animation, and is basically "The tales of Uncle Reums". The movie is available on a Japanese laserdisc, but it hasn't been released in the USA yet. The reason is that Disney feels that the public feels the movie may ascribe inadvertant stereotyping to the black characters of the movie, and they don't want the controversy. But in truth, no such stereotyping does occur. Check out laserdisc stores in your area; you should be able to find the disc for about $75.00 or so. --- GoldED 2.50 * Origin: The Moonshadow :*: 916.343.0534 :*: Chico, CA :*: (1:119/50) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 149 DISNEY Ref: EAM00003 Date: 06/17/97 From: JOHN GIANNINI Time: 12:52pm \/To: RICH KOSTER (Read 0 times) Subj: Netmail Rich - I have sent you two netmail messages in the last 2 weeks. I sent them to your point (3828/1.3) via your bossnode (3828/1). Have you polled 3828/1 lately? If that bossnode is correctly set up, then netmail for your point should be held for you on Bob Ferrara's system until you poll, and then it should be transmitted to you. From past experience, I can say that often, bossnodes are not set up right, so mail addressed to a point just gets thrown into the the bossnode's byte bucket. So, can you write to Bob to make sure his bossnode is set up correctly? I just got your message saying you did not receive my netmails. But I CRASHED my mail to you at 3828/1. I did not use host routing or anything. I therefore know my mail got to Bob's board - the session is even in my binkley log. So the question is, why didn't the mail get to your point from Bob's board? This *has* to be a problem with Bob's system. Please ask him to fix his config problem so I can get this netmail through to you. Then leave me a message here when he's correct the problem. It was a movie they made nearly 50 years and it was based on The Tales Of Uncle Remus about a freed slave in The Late 1800's who tells children stories. Afro-American Activists felt it gave a negative portrayal of blacks in The 19th Century. They were not treated as equals back then and since Disney never wants to "offend" any race. The movie is no longer shown except in Japan which is on Laser-Disc. --- OLX 2.2 TD I couldn't repair your mind so I made your head bigger. * Origin: The GIFfer BBS, 75+gig, (813)969-2761 (1:377/50) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 149 DISNEY Ref: EAN00002 Date: 06/18/97 From: IRENE WATKINS-PITCHFORD Time: 08:42pm \/To: KAREN RICHMOND (Read 0 times) Subj: Stroller wars Yoo hoo, I'm almost afraid to pass on this tip, since someone jumped on my case for using the free month on compuserve and then cancelling (they called me a freeloader! boo hoo) Anyway, my eight year old is rather big for a stroller. However, when we have been at Disneyland until closing and she is ready to collapse, we sometimes borrow an abandoned stroller at the monorail entrance and put her, our assorted souveniers and push our way to Main Street. The stroller people always seem happy to take it and it saves them having to string them up and tow them back. Again, I emphasize that this is at closing time, the strollers are abandoned by people on their way back to the hotel, and we only do it sometimes.
