DW>BW> The A-1-A was powered on the "A" axle within each truck, while the DW>BW> "1" axle (that being the one in the middle of each set of three DW>BW> axles) was an idler axle. DW> I knew "A" units had a cab, while "B" or booster units didn't. DW>When you start talking the internal composition and or mechanics of DW>the trucks, well, you might as well be talking greek to me. Please DW>bear with me...I'm still very new at this. Not a problem. Take your time, ask whatever questions I might be able to respond to, and enjoy it. Easy way to look at the designations might be this: letters represent powered axles, numbers for non-powered axles. If you get into engine series, I won't be able to detail any of that for you, despite being aware of some of those details. Between engine series and alternator ratings, traction ratings and dynamic braking, much of that is over my head, despite a life-long interest in railroading. And last but not least what AH> about the BRAND NEW California Amtrak locos..... very nice!!!! The FP45 was bought by the Santa Fe because they wanted a locomotive that would look somewhat streamlined in passenger service and could be easily converted to freight service. Which is what happened as soon as they got out of the passenger business. As lead units though, they are only good on through-freights and express trains. On a way-freight or a local they are next to useless... As for the F40, Amtrak has been leasing out some of their older ones to freight railroads who only use them when the bottom of the barrel has been scraped. Because of their higher gearing, although the prime mover produces 3000 hp, only 2000 hp is available as pulling power. And since they are not equipped with IDUs (the receiver for the End-of-Train device) they are not fit to lead freights. Mike --- Blue Wave/DOS v2.20 [NR] * Origin: Juxtaposition BBS.
