I think my biggest gripe around here is that if a person wants to be on the shore of the Hudson, they have to cross the tracks. There's a whole lot of fisherfolks over there who don't wish to purchase a boat. Also, the ill-mannered fish refuse to swim and feed at the few places you can "leagaly" cross the tracks. Railfans don't seem to have a problem but the Metro-North cops seem to be giving the fishermen all kinds of trouble if they're found on the shore side of the tracks. Now, if one of these fishermen were to go to Poughkeepsie and purchase a Metro-North ticket to New York City and then "missed" his train, would he still be considered tresspassing if he were found sitting on a rock 100 feet from the grade waiting for a nibble? :) ... Well, all of your points are valid with the possible exception of this one. However, it still depends on the class of railroad and whether there are passenger trains running on the track. I forget the exact name for it, something like Class 1 excepted track, with passenger speeds permisssible to 70mph (or so) daily inspection of the tracks is manditory (at least it is on Conrail). Granted, this is with a high rail truck but the inspector is the one who's got his head in the noose if anything happens. And, it still can. The Lakeshore Limited derailed near here 2 years ago, turned out to be a section of rail where the ball of the rail had deformed slightly and a materials handling car rode over the top, ran another 4 miles or so before the rest of the train decided to follow it. Most fortunately no one was killed or seriously injured. On the other side of track speeds and weights is the high usage of welded rail. I believe I read that where its still jointed rail, passenger trains are restricted to 45 mph? I might be off on the speed a bit. AC> I guess there are a lot more can be added. Every unexplained AC> derailment, puts AC> the heat on the perway maintenance chief, to add new speed AC> restrictions. I suppose. Look at how long it took to find the cause of the above derailment, over a year. Believe me, its a black mark on a maintainence chiefs record to have a drailment that's caused by bad trackwork. A couple of guys at the yard up here have been seen sporting jackets with a CSX "Bright Future" engine on the back and "CSX, Rochester, NY" under it. Word among the railfans is that the trades would rather be under CSX, mostly because NS is tough with the rules, and actually (gasp!) makes people work! CP, CN and Susquehanna are all clamoring now for either some protection from the "merger" or more trackage rights or outright sales of less used lines like the Southern Tier and the Montreal Secondary. At least one line sale was put on indefinate hold till after the merger, the Buffalo Line from Keating to Buffalo was supposed to go to the B&P, looks like that'll wait. The maintenance facility is located just off US 40 about about half a mile west of Salem Church Road and about a mile east of Glascow. The main building, which is abot 1/4 mile long and houses nine tracks, is not visible from U. S. 40, but a sign marks the turn. The Bear facility performs heavy overhaul and repair for Amtrak's Amfleet equipment. Whether or not you are interested in railroads, you would fine this an interesting Saturday outing. --- PCBoard (R) v15.3 (OS/2) 5 * Origin: HRDNet BBS >>Serving Amtrak's Training Community<< (1:150/160) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 147 RAILROAD FANS Ref: E5Y00001 Date: 05/27/97 From: JOHN MANTER Time: 09:00pm \/To: ALL (Read 0 times) Subj: Stockton Calif Rail Web p Hello Everyone, I just finished putting up a small web page, that has pictures of the action in and around Stockton Calif. PRC> PRC> Have plenty of information at the ready... PRC> PRC> Fire away! Well I'm mostly interested in power, I have an older friend who grew up next to the tracks and actually worked the yards until (Con Rail) took over. He has a deep love of this old line and has long wished to model it in HO scale.Alas his health is failing along with his memory and when we sit and talk (he use to be a walking history book) about the LVRR I would love to be able to keep up to him. Economics and age has forced him to move to my area so any thing you can tell me to please his ears and talk shop with him would be great. If I can before he passes I would like to build atleast a few cars and or engines in the old colors but I'm finding that documentation of this line is hard to locate.Any suggested sources? Maybe you were from or real familiar with the old line his name is John Collins. He always wanted to be an engineer and I guess thats why he likes the power so much.Although he has told me of many wrecks and floods. And the damage it caused. I look forward to your replies and with your permission I would like to save and print out what you send me for John to read it.
