I've been reading the same mags as you... R13 is going to be around for a while in my opinion for about 5 years before R14 hits the big leagues. In the meantime there is going to be a gradual phase-out for support on R12. When r12 is phased out (in AutoDesk's mind) R14 will be released. Looks like R14 (in the current trends) will operate only in Windows (95 and NT) and will require virtual reality input and output devices (like those on some arcade games). This will force 3D solid modeling for what ever is being drawn. This should take care of many little problems (in exchange for adding a few more). Also, set your minimum swap file area to about 800kB. Also make sure you have at 4X the harddisk space than the file size of the file you are working on. Another problem... MANY OF THE 486DX2-66 CHIP THAT ARE OUT THERE ARE NOT CUT OUT TO RUN AT 66MHZ!!! Frequent crashes on those system are a definite sign of a dreaded CPU failure in the future. Cheap fix for this is to get a BIG (4") fan mounted inside the CPU box and have the air flow directed over the CPU chip and, if possible, the memory too. Those fans mounted on the heatsinks fail a lot more often than you think and do not push enough air to keep a 486DX2-66 cool. --- GEcho 1.11+ * Origin: NIGHT STALKER BBS (1:2202/20) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 146 AUTOCAD Ref: DAI00000 Date: 06/13/96 From: TJ FOURNIER Time: 12:26pm \/To: JAMES VANSICKLE (Read 3 times) Subj: ACAD 14??? The problem I am having is that my computer is shared with 8 others to an HP Laserjet II p printer. Since the upgrade from R12 I can not print. It seems that ACAD is trying to print directly to my LPT1 port and DOS/WFW have redirected it to COM1 for the shared printer. I have tried just about everything I can think of to get this to print. HELP! I was told by an ACAD Guru that there is a way to make ACAD R13 for Windows print hardware or software, and I am in hardware mode. However I can not find where you would change this in setup. I think I need it to print software controled so that the print manager in Windows will pick up my plots. BTW all my other software in DOS or Windows prints. Please post any help here or call my BBS directly at the origin line. On my computer, I've installed the Windows Printer driver and use it to go to my HP 560C using the Lantastic 5 spooler. This works really well. You will need to have the proper driver for your printer installed in Windows (HP supplies them). I've gone directly to a Calcomp pen plotter on another computer through the network, but I don't remember how I did it. Another way to print is to have the output go to a file and then use a copy utility to copy it to the port. You may be able to use the network name as the file name and have it spooled to the printer. Hope this helps!
