We have delayed it (again, I know I'm sorry) because we have an announcement that we want to make and the final meeting on this will be held on Sunday 18th Jan. So until then 99b it is. Boost For Hungaroring The Hungarian government have given the Hungaroring 3 million pounds to improve the pit lanes and communication facilities at the track. More Sponsorship For Jordan Jordan have a new sponsorship deal with Pearl Assurance and reportedly increased sponsorship from MasterCard. McLaren Delay McLaren look set to delay the official launch of their car until the end of February. The team aim to maximise wind tunnel development and help finalise the aerodynamic package of the car. The new McLaren will be the first from Adrian Newey. The delay means that they will not be able to carry out much testing before the cars are shipped off to Australia, giving them very limited experience of their new Bridgestone tyres. Williams Red Faces Williams new paint scheme has landed them in trouble with the anti-smoking lobby in Australia. The first race of the season is exempt from tobacco sponsorship rules because it is deemed an international event, but the lobbyists feel the kangaroo logo (part of the Winfield design) goes against the spirit of the exemption. Tyrrell Line Up Latest The possible Tyrrell line up for 1998 changes on a daily basis (almost). This week Andrea Montermini is the hot favourite to partner Takagi, though Boullion and Verstappen are still being linked with the seat. Portuguese GP Off The Portuguese government confirmed that the work needed on the Estoril circuit would not be completed in time for the GP to take place. The race has now been dropped from the calendar for the second year running. Belgian GP Given More Time With the Portuguese GP now off the calendar the FIA have delayed their decision on the inclusion of the Belgian GP until February 15th. South Africa and China are the two reserve races expected to fill any vacant slots. Hill And Villeneuve Criticise Schumacher Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve have both criticised Michael Schumacher over the European GP incident. Hill called for Schumacher to offer an explanation adding "We have to know his view on acceptable standards of driving". Villeneuve was rather more straightforward, saying "He has made attacks like the one at Jerez all his life. He'll probably do it again". Mansell Backs Hill Former World champion Nigel Mansell has backed Damon Hill to give Jordan the boost they need to win races. Mansell said he thought Jordan would be in a position to win two or three times in the coming season. Stewart Cautious Jackie Stewart has said that he is optimistic about his team's chances for next year, but his main aim is consistency rather than podium places. He wants to finish most races with the chance of challenging for points. Issue 100 has an announcement about a game that we will be running as well as a copy of issue 1. Only 37 people were on the list for issue 1 (there are now well over 40,000) and to the 37 and the rest of you that have supported us over the past two and a bit years we give our thanks. I expect issue 200 to appear sometime in December 1999. Testing The serious testing is getting underway now, with most teams in Spain. Williams were top again today with Damon Hill 3rd. Hill had his first run in a Jordan Honda on Tuesday, he only completed three laps with a best time of 1.27.39. Tyrrell Launched The new Tyrrell 026, and the last before they become the new BAT owned team was launched today (Wednesday). Speaking at the launch Ken Tyrrell said "We intend to go out this year with a bang, so we have put everything into designing the car. We are aiming for podium places and we think we have the car to get a few." Tyrrell have still not confirmed their second driver for 1998 but are expected to sign one from Norberto Fontana, Ricardo Rosset, Vincenzo Sospiri and Andrea Montermini. Ferrari Test Cut Short Ferrari have had electrical problems which hampered their testing programme. The problem causes the car to change into second gear by itself. EU To Investigate F1 A senior EU official has voiced concerns over the way F1 is run. It is possible that the EU will investigate the running of F1 after Karel van Miert commented that the running of F1 is "layer upon layer of exclusive deals amounting to cartel behaviour added to abuse of a dominant position for the benefit of one company". The EU will also be investigating complaints about the administration of F1 from a group of businessmen in the Spa region of Belgium. Jordan Confirm de la Rosa As expected, Jordan have confirmed Pedro de la Rosa as their test driver, they will also take young Japanese driver Juich Wakasaki on board as part of their youth development programme. Prost Launch 1998 Car Alain Prost unveiled his new 1998 car today. The AP01 is the first car to be truly developed by Prost F1. The AP01 will use the new Peugeot V10, one of the more potent engines in F1 at the moment. Commenting on the new cars prospects Prost said "What's very important to me is how we envisage to work together for the future both technically and at the human level........I believe we are going in the right direction,".. Prost Hits Out At Hill Alain Prost hit out at Damon Hill - at the launch of the new Prost AP01. When asked about Hill's decision to join Jordan Alain said "I was very disappointed - more with the way it was done than with anything. "Now I realise I would have had a lot of doubts about Damon's motivation." Williams Duo Top Testing Williams are back at the top of the time sheets after the two drivers dominated Tuesday's testing session. Frentzen was quickest with a best time of 1.21.38 while Villeneuve managed 1.24.64. Frentzen had last year's car fitted with grooved tyres, while Villeneuve had the slower 1998 car fitted with slick tyres. Jordan Launch 1998 Car Jordan Launched their new car earlier this week, with the team giving an upbeat opinion on their chances for 1998. Former World Champion Damon Hill said he was confident that he would score Jordan's first GP win in 98. The team also had the chance to announce a new sponsorship deal with Nat West (National Westminster Bank - one of the 'big four' clearing banks in the UK). The new car also has a Hornet motif on the nose cone to replace last year's Snake. Benetton Launch 1998 Car Benetton have launched their 1998 car and are confident that it will enable them to mount a strong challenge throughout the year. Benetton are keen to return to the form they had in 1994 and 1995. Technical director Pat Symonds added: "I am confident we have everything in place now to return to the top." Benetton also unveiled a deal with Bridgestone, making them the second of the 'big four' to defect to the Japanese tyre company. Bridgestone now have six teams signed for 1998 and currently do not have the capacity to service any more. Schumacher The Jerez incident continues to rumble on in the background. Latest in the references to it comes from the man himself. Answering questions on the race Schumacher said "I certainly do not feel that my reputation has gone down.....I believe most people do not reduce the season down to one race.......I am well aware the season ended badly for me but I have to look to the future......I have said I made a mistake". New Sponsor For McLaren McLaren have announced a new sponsorship deal with the chocolate and soft drinks giant Cadbury Schweppes. New Sponsor For Arrows In an unusual alliance, TWR Arrows have teamed up with a business school from the University of Oxford. Arrows will get free advice on marketing and attracting sponsors while the business school will get free advertising on the drivers suits and the cars. F1 Fans In Belgian GP Legal Battle The row over next year's axing of the Belgian GP has taken a step nearer the courts now that Belgian race fans have contracted lawyer Jean-Louis Dupont (the one who represented Jean Marc Bosman in his football transfer case). The Belgian fans want the European court to force the FIA to drop their threat to cancel the race because of tobacco advertising restrictions. Dream Team Competition We have decided to launch a Dream Team competition for this year and invite you all to visit the relevant section on the web site which will be ready in time for next week's newsletter. In the mean time here are brief details about the competition and what it involves. As a 'Dream Team' manager you have 60 Million pounds to spend. With this money you must buy a complete team, which consists of two drivers, a chassis, an engine, some tyres, a pit crew and a main advertiser. There will be prizes for the overall winners of the competition as well as a race by race prize for the best score in any one race. The main prize will be two tickets plus accommodation to the 1999 Monaco GP (if for some reason there is no 1999 Monaco race, then we will sort out another suitable venue for the winner), the weekly prize will be a bottle of Moet (or whichever Champagne the drivers waste this year) that you are free to spray F1 style all over your TV, friends, dog, car etc. The other main prizes have not been finalised yet but we hope to offer a fair selection. The competition will be scored on your best 14 results from the season (if we actually get 14 races this year :-(, the way the calendar keeps changing who knows). The cost of the drivers, cars etc. will be on the web site but to give you a chance to think about your selection here are the prices in millions. Drivers Tyres M. Schumacher 24 Goodyear 8 J. A maximum score (before tuning bonus, see below) would be 66 points. Your driver, chassis, engine, tyres and advertiser finish first (10 points x 5 = 50). Your second driver comes second in the race (6 points + 50 = 56). And your pit crew perform the fastest pit stop of the day 10 bonus points. Once you have finalised your selections you will not be able to change them. However after every race you get 1 Million pounds added to your kitty which you may spend on 'tuning' the performance of your team. You can tune your chassis and engine and you may train your pit crew. Tuning costs 25% of the purchase price and may be carried out three times. So to tune the Williams chassis (cost 20 Million) would cost 5 Million. Tuning increases the points performance by 15% the first time, then 10% then 5%. (This is all explained in detail on the web site) So a tuned Williams chassis could score 11.5 points, 12.5 points or 13 points depending on how much you tune it. I hope that sort of explains the idea behind the game. The registration forms will be on the web site by next week. The prizes need to be funded so there will be an entry fee of $10 which you will be able to pay in a wide variety of ways. More next week. Issue 1 Way, way back in November 1995 we issued the very first edition of Formula 1 News. To celebrate 100 issues I have decided to enclose a limited edition, once in a lifetime copy of that very issue. ==================== (-: Formula1 NEWS :-) ===================== The Electronic Formula 1 News Service for the Internet World Wide Web server at http://www.u-net.com/enigma/formula1 *** November 21st, 1995*** *** Issue Number 1 *** ================================================================ Thanks to all those of you who have subscribed to the F1 news list. News should be released on a weekly basis during the season (only 15 weeks to go !!!! Keep calm!). While the teams and drivers take time off the articles will be less frequent. In This Issue * Hakkinen Released From Intensive Care * Schumacher Starts Testing * Minardi still no engine * Judd engines blocked * Portuguese First * Mansell to race in Indy 500 * Wendlinger out * Herbert without a seat Hakkinen Released Mika Hakkinen has been released from intensive care. Hakkinen was 'extraordinarily lucky' according to Syd Watkins, to have survived the 125 m.p.h. shunt which was considered to be a 'Fatal Crash'. FIA Expert Advisory Group research shows that G forces on the head can peak at 150 in crashes such as Hakkinen's; this is more than the body can tolerate and usually proves fatal. Hakkinen suffered a fracture to the base of his skull when his head hit the steering wheel. The response of the medical crews probably saved Hakkinen's life. The first member was on site within seconds and supported his neck, Syd Watkins was there within the first minute by which time a trackside doctor had already performed a tracheotomy to allow Mika to breathe. His airways were blocked with blood. He was stabilised at the trackside for 15 minutes and then flown to intensive care. Syd Watkins has said he sees no reason why Mika should not make a full recovery. Schumacher Starts Testing Michael Schumacher had his first test behind 'closed doors' last week at Fiorano. It is unclear which engine he was using (V10 or V12) as Nicola Larini has also been testing both. It is expected that Ferrari will complete their V10 programme in time for Schumacher to test the new engine under strenuous conditions. Minardi Still no engine. The Italian based Minardi team are set to use the same engines from 95 in their 96 campaign. The chassis will only be modified to incorporate new safety features. The main problem is money (as usual). Judd engines blocked The proposed deal for Judd to rebadge old Yamaha V10 engines has been blocked by the Japanese manufacturer. This means that the Pacific team will have to use Cosworth ED engines again. Portuguese First Congratulations are due to Pedro Lamy. He became the first Portuguese driver to score a World Championship point when he finished 6th in the final race of the season. Mansell to race in Indy 500 Mansell could be set to compete in this years Indy 500 at the wheel of a Lola Ford entered by Pat Patrick. This is expected to be a one off outing which will give Nigel the chance to win the Indy, which eluded him during his two years in the states. Wendlinger out It is almost certain that Karl Wendlinger will leave the Sauber team. The two drivers that are being linked with the vacant seat are Mark Blundell who was replaced at McLaren by David Coulthard, and the ever present Johnny Herbert, who is still without a definite drive for 1996. Herbert without a seat Johnny Herbert is without a seat at the moment, but it is understood that he has been linked with many teams. Herbert is understood to have an offer from Tyrrell, a test session with Ligier and offers supposedly from the Pac West and Ganassi Indy car teams. ================================================================ News Services We have changed the news pages on the web server and now the News and gossip, news archive, weekly e-mail subscription form and the new daily news e-mail service are all grouped on a single page entitled (rather imaginatively we thought) News Services. I added a parenthesis to explain that that meant driver points, that was incorrect as an entrant is a team or a car owner. Also, I listed Davey Hamilton with car number 23, that was Nienhouse Motorsports' number from last season, the car number is 6 this year. --- GoldED/386 3.00.Beta2+ 44LM1 * Origin: Motorsports One - Kingston, Ontario (1:249/186) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 142 AUTO RACING Ref: F1X00002 Date: 01/27/98 From: MARTIN VINCENT Time: 09:42pm \/To: ALL (Read 1 times) Subj: IRL Points standings Pep Boys Indy Racing League After 1 of 11 races Official points standings Pos Mov Driver Team Points === === ==================== ======================================== ====== 1 Tony Stewart 1 Glidden / Menards G Force/Aurora 52 2 Jeff Ward 35 Tabasco G Force/Aurora 40 3 Davey Hamilton 6 Merrill Corporation G Force/Aurora 35 4 Stephan Gregoire 77 Miller Eads G Force/Aurora 32 5 Mark Dismore 28 Kelley / Delphi Dallara/Aurora 30 6 Scott Sharp 8 Delphi / Futaba Dallara/Aurora 28 7 Mike Groff 10 VisionAire / Bryant G Force/Aurora 26 8 Arie Luyendyk 5 Sprint PCS / Qualcomm G Force/Aurora 24 9 Sam Schmidt 99 BG Products Dallara/Aurora 22 10 John Paul Jr. 18 Klipsch / Overhead G Force/Aurora 20 11 Tyce Carlson 20 Keco Coatings Dallara/Aurora 19 12 Eliseo Salazar 15 Reebok / Copec Riley & Scott/Aurora 18 13 Kenny Brack 14 Power Team Dallara/Aurora 17 14 Buzz Calkins 12 Bradley G Force/Aurora 16 15 Buddy Lazier 91 Delta Faucet Dallara/Aurora 15 16 Jimmy Kite 7 Royal Purple Dallara/Aurora 14 17 Scott Goodyear 4 Pennzoil / Nortel G Force/Aurora 13 18 Raul Boesel 30 Fast Rod / NHLPA G Force/Aurora 12 19 Brian Tyler 17 Pep Boys / WCW Dallara/Aurora 11 20 Robbie Buhl 3 Johns Manville G Force/Aurora 10 21 Billy Boat 11 Conseco Dallara/Aurora 9 22 Stan Wattles 19 Metro Systems Riley & Scott/Aurora 8 23 Jack Miller 40 Crest Dallara/Infiniti 7 24 Eddie Cheever Jr. 51 Team Cheever Dallara/Aurora 6 25 Greg Ray 97 Mercury Outboards Dallara/Aurora 5 26 Roberto Guerrero 21 Goodyear / WavePhore Dallara/Aurora 4 27 Marco Greco 16 Int.
