It was still amusing watching the MC with ~750 hp (yuh...right :) against the 900+ hp (I think that's what they said). It was also fun watching the team of Porshe guys with their truckload of hi-tech stuff against the good ole boys and a roll of duct tape :) You gotta remember....this was quite a while back.....the Folgers MC wasn't near as technologically advanced as today's NASCAR cars. Those guys probably never even heard of a wind tunnel :) GE> What next? Top-fuel Dragster vs. Dodge Viper on a slalom course? It wasn't quite that much a mismatch....I would think the 962 would have run a little closer. Even with the extra downforce, the MC was pushing a helluva lot of air at 240+ mph. --- WWIVToss v.1.38b Registered * Origin: "The Fish Tank" [ASV/CBV] - Proud WWIV System! Schumacher) RMD> We should not forget that even the 'super heros' of F1 started as RMD> crash pilots. Ecspecially Senna was well known for his recklessness. I don't think that I heard Ralf's name mentioned at Suzuka, Fisichella's either for that matter. Of course there were many other issues to think about! Villeneuve seems to have pissed on his own shoes [caused a problem that was avoidable] in this case. Even if the conspiracy theorists are correct and the WORLD is out to get JV so that Michael can win the World Drivers' title for Ferrari - a little bit of brain power on JV's part would have helped. Too bad that Eddie Irvine didn't just roar away from Michael as he did from Jacques - the pass for the lead (EI/MS) was the saddest part of the weekend. Mind you if Irvine had held his lead I'll bet that his car would have mysteriously fallen off the jack-stands on the last pitstop (Berger would then find an open seat at Ferrari - imagine that!). I don't like the idea or practice of team orders - whoever has the car and feel for the day should win. > [...Ford V8...] > ... Tyrell and Salo have scored some points while down in power. RMD> But that was in the heavy rain of Monaco with half of the grid on RMD> wrong tyres! OK, OK ;-) But I was looking around at Gale Force F1 on the weekend where I found that Tyrrell have completed more laps this year than any teams except Benetton and Ferrari - so the car is dependable - add the V-10 power and they may be able to do what Stewart has not. We'll see - losing Salo might be costly though. > The "customer" Ford will have to perform reliably or the "customers" > will walk away. RMD> Bur where to? The Hart engines, the only ones that can be labelled as RMD> Customer engines, are even weaker! Lola? (Is this the old Judd?) If that comes to fruition. The Ford may still be one year away from full power - but with all of the other changes that may not matter as much. Tyrrell's new sponsor has deep pockets, and Tagaki (sp?) strengthens the tie to Japan - if there are any spare Hondas available Tyrrell might be in line. Actually I am surprised that Toyota has not jumped in - Suzuki and Kawasaki might have something to offer too. > All the teams will have some disadvantage with the narrower cars and > grooved tires. RMD> That is a real shame! ... And these small chassis make the cars look RMD> like Formula 3s! I downloaded a jpeg of that 1967 Eagle-Weslake - it is tiny - no pods, no wings - front or rear, barely a rollbar and guess what - treaded tires! (actually it looks like a formula car should). Given a year, probably less, the narrower 1998s will look normal again. RMD> ...How did you come to europe first... Very briefly - through a death in the family. Cousins had rebuilt a farmhouse in Provence for their retirement but the husband died very shortly afterwards. I was dispatched to help with the upkeep as I was finished school in January and would have to wait until fall to start university. I arrived in Nice with $20 and no return ticket - when things didn't go exactly as planned I ended up working illegally in France. As a result of working illegally I ended up in Monaco for the 1969 GP (to get back on topic). A tourist visa was good for 3 months so in May I had to make a trip out of France to Italy to get my passport stamped. On the way home, in Monte Carlo, I saw that the qualifing or practice was just ending so I stayed there for the rest of the event. It is the one and only F1 race that I have seen, and I don't remember who won, but I do remember the sound of the cars and really with the cheapest general ticket I didn't see much racing. There were a couple of spots next to and under the grandstands that one could see some of the race. Seems to me that the "great unwashed" were kept moving most of the time. ...more should probably move to e-mail...
