I don't see what people see in those cars. They are boring to watch and take too long to finish a race if there are a lot of yellows. Don't get me wrong, I love racing. If fact, I spent the entire season on Saturday nights racing at the Boone Speedway (IMCA Super Nationals), finished 5th. in points out of 96 cars. And I wasn't even trying to be that high. The sprint cars took so long to finish their feature 2 years ago at Nationals on finals night that they said whoever was in the line-up for the next yellow, would be the final line-up for the race results for that feature. Everybody was glad when they were done. They have their own night for heat races and features now instead of when the rest of the Hobby Stocks, IMCA Stock cars, and Modifieds finish on the final night of racing for Nationals. I went to area beside the track when the Sprint cars were running. The stands were not as packed as the previous 2 nights or the following 2 nights. You know what that tells me?? Sprint cars are dull and NOISY!! Yamaha Keen To Renew Arrows Deal Recent performances by the Arrows team have done much to raise the credibility of the Yamaha engine. A near win in Hungary and two top ten qualifications at Spa (a power track) have boosted Yamaha's hopes of igning a new deal with Arrows. Team owner Tom Walkinshaw has insisted that he has had an engine deal igned for some time now. Top candidates are the new Hart V10 and the second Mecachrome deal - which has still not been confirmed. Benetton were thought to have the second deal for the 'Renault' engines, ut they are struggling to secure a full budget for next year. Tyrrell And Minardi To Use Ford V10 Tyrrell and Minardi are set to use the customer Ford V10 units next year. Tyrrell will be stepping up from the Ford V8, Minardi will be swapping from the Hart V8 that they currently use. New Factory For Tyrrell Tyrrell are to build a new larger factory on its Okham site. The new unit will also include a new wind tunnel. US GP Before 2000? The owner of Road America and the Panoz team (Donald Panoz) has plans to spend up to 7 million dollars redeveloping the Road America circuit so that it can host an F1 GP by the year 2000. The redevelopment will include a highly flexible circuit that has many variants (similar to multi variant tracks like Buenos Aires) and a new four lane highway linking the circuit complex to the public road network. FIA To Rule On Fisichella The FIA's Contract Recognition Board will rule on Giancarlo Fisichella's future. Jordan are confident that they will have his services for 1998. A decision is expected before the Italian GP. Hakkinen Ban Mika Hakkinen has been given a one race ban, suspended for two races. The ban was given for overtaking while following the safety car. This comes on top of the McLaren drivers generally bad weekend which was only brightened up by his third place finish. He still might loose that, if the retesting on his fuel proves that the initial findings (that the fuel was not of the specified type) were orrect. The FIA are due to discuss this later in the week. Diniz Ban Proving that Arrows can do as well as McLaren :-) Pedro Diniz was also iven a one race suspended ban for overtaking while under the safety car. Pedro's ban is suspended for one race, which is a bit odd as he commuted the same offence as Hakkinen. Hakkinen Mika Hakkinen was due start the Belgian GP from the back of the grid following a fuel irregularity which also saw the McLaren team fined. After an appeal, Hakkinen was reinstated to 5th. McLaren appealed on the grounds that the fuel in Hakkinen's car was from he same batch that he used at the British GP - which was found to be legal. he fuel will undergo further testing next week and until the situation is finally resolved the results of the Belgian GP remain provisional, as Hakkinen may be excluded from the results. Hill / Benetton ? After turning down Sauber's multi million dollar offer, then turning down McLaren's possible multi million dollar offer, Hill has now been linked ith Benetton. Benetton are one of the few teams that could offer him a chance of race wins, but they are yet to confirm that they will have the re-badged Renault engines for next year. Benetton are also said to be struggling with their budget for 1998. Prost and Arrows are all still in the hunt to secure his services and the Sauber option is not yet closed. It is looking increasingly likely that Hill will go to Prost or stay at Arrows. If you are wondering which team he will be linked with next week, just pick one from Arrows, Benetton, Ferrari, Jordan, McLaren, Minardi, Prost, auber, Stewart, Tyrrell and Williams. McLaren Apologise To Hakkinen McLaren took the unusual step of issuing a public apology to one of it's drivers. Mika Hakkinen had the rear left wheel of his car came off after ne of the carbon fibre suspension components failed. This caused him to crash quite badly, winding the driver in the process. McLaren apologised to him for the component failure and reverted to steel units for the qualifying session. New Team Owners It looks like the proposed BAT/Reynard team might be officially entered under the brand name of a cigarette. This would mean that the car would be "Lucky Strike Ford" or whatever engine they finally use. This would enable the team to use a cigarette brand in the title (as it would be the constructor) and side step the ban on tobacco advertising. If it happens, I expect we will see other tobacco companies follow suit. Panis Olivier Panis is now back with the Prost team. He will begin his recovery and get back into daily duties between now and the Japanese GP where he is expected to return to racing. Initial driving will probably be in an F3 car mid September. Panis has also been offered another 2 year contract by the Prost team which he says will ease his mind and aid his recovery. Belgium Results Man Of The Match: M. Schumacher Fastest Lap: J. The sheer amount of rain that fell on the circuit made it too unsafe to start the race under normal conditions. The safety car led the race for three laps before pulling in and allowing the race to start. Almost immediately Alesi began to pressure Villeneuve nd Alesi himself was being pressured by Schumacher. On lap 5 Schumacher passed Alesi and then Villeneuve and began to pull away convincingly. By the end of the lap he was 5.8 seconds ahead of Villeneuve and still increasing his lead. Villeneuve pitted on lap 7 for intermediate tyres leaving Fisichella in second, followed by Alesi, Hakkinen, Frentzen, Diniz and Hill. At the end f lap 7 Schumacher's lead was an almost unbelievable 22.8 seconds. Alesi pitted on lap 7 for slick tyres while Schumacher began to set fastest lap after fastest lap. By lap 10 Alesi, Berger, Salo and Frentzen were all on slicks, while Hill came in and pitted for intermediate tyres, a decision that was to cost him dearly in terms of race position. Salo set the first fastest time for a slick tyred car on lap 12 with 2.04.089, followed on lap 13 by Alesi's time of 2.03.496. Slick tyres were beginning to have the advantage and on lap 14 Schumacher came in for his first set of slicks. Villeneuve, Herbert and Hill all came in for slicks - Villeneuve and Hill both pitting for the second time in the race. By lap 15, Schumacher was 60 seconds ahead, Alesi was second followed by Fisichella, Hakkinen, Herbert, Coulthard, Frentzen, Berger and Verstappen. Villeneuve was 10th and Hill 11th. Frentzen began to press Coulthard and managed to pass him, on lap 20 Frentzen passed Herbert and moved into 4th spot. The rain started again on lap 20, though it was nowhere near as heavy as he rain before the race. Ralf Schumacher went out on lap 22 when he lost control of his Jordan and hit the barriers nose first. The second round of pit stops started from lap 23, Alesi was the first of the front runners to come in, followed by Frentzen. The race order became Schumacher, Fisichella, Hakkinen, Alesi, Herbert and Villeneuve. Giancarlo Fisichella set the fastest lap time on lap 26 when he went round in 1.56.566, this was bettered by Hakkinen on lap 27 with a time of 1.55.890. Hakkinen improved further on lap 28 with a time of 1.55.736, quickly followed by Villeneuve who set a time of 1.55.112 on the same lap. Schumacher and Hakkinen came in for fresh tyres, followed a lap later by Fisichella, Herbert and Villeneuve. Lap 30 saw Berger become the fastest man on the track with a time of 1.54.993. The running order on lap 33 was Schumacher, 43 seconds ahead of Fisichella. Hakkinen was third, followed by Frentzen, Herbert Villeneuve nd Alesi. Frentzen set a fastest lap of 1.54.597 on lap 36, beaten by Berger on the same lap with 1.53.967. Villeneuve began to put on a charge in an effort to catch Herbert, setting string of fastest laps which culminated in the fastest lap of the race on lap 43 - the time being 1.52.692. The race ended in that order, Schumacher leading Fisichella and Hakkinen to the podium places, followed by Frentzen, Herbert and Villeneuve. While Schumacher deservedly gets the Man of the match award, I feel special mention should go to Pedro Diniz. At one stage he was third (in an Arrows t Spa!!!!) and his final race result may have been much better if his first pit stop hadn't been 16.8 seconds - thanks to a wheel nut problem. Zandvoort The Dutch GP was held on 30 occasions, each time at the Zandvoort track. he last race to be held here was the 1985 GP which was won by Lauda in a McLaren. The circuit is situated about 15 miles west of Amsterdam and near the oast. The sand nearby dunes meant that sand on the track was a constant hazard, but the racing was always entertaining. The circuit is shaped like a square, with a tail on one corner. This tail s the tight right hander at the end of the main straight that is very nearly a 180. (About 177 degrees) Even better, the corner is called "Tarzan"! The current circuit is a much shorter version of the original now down from 2.642 miles to 1.565 miles. The Tarzan and Hugenholtz are the only two untouched corners and the track is now used for domestic racing. Zeltweg This track held the first Austrian F1 GP in 1964. The circuit is situated about 45 miles north west of Graz and was basically another of the emporary airfield circuits that held F1 races in the early years. The 1964 race was the only F1 GP to be held here as it proved very npopular with the drivers. The surface was a very bumpy concrete one which caused a high rate of retirement, only 8 cars finished the race. The circuit was 1.988 miles long and its shape is best described as a nine --- Blue Wave/DOS v2.30 [NR] * Origin: The Power Station * (403) 963-1859 * (1:342/5) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 142 AUTO RACING Ref: EDM00005 Date: 09/12/97 From: IAN CAMPBELL Time: 01:48pm \/To: ALL (Read 2 times) Subj: 2 F-1 News 091 iron. Two long straights are joined at one end by a hairpin and at the ther end by a right hander, 180, left hander that leads back onto the straight. The Austrian GP moved to the nearby Osterreichring in 1970. Zolder The Zolder circuit is probably best known for the accident which killed Gilles Villeneuve. Zolder held the Belgian GP 10 times, before it moved back to the Spa track (which had been shortened to the current configuration). The circuit has a similar shape to Monaco with the two straights running parallel. Zolder however, was spoiled by the number of chicanes (4) which interfered with the racing on the track. The final chicane was added at the spot where Gilles Villeneuve was killed, and after that event the circuit only hosted one more GP, which was in 84. Zanardi Alessandro Zanardi started in F1 with the Jordan team, where he took over the seat vacated by Michael Schumacher. For 1992 he was the Benetton test driver, but made three appearances for Minardi in place of the injured Fittipaldi. His real break came in 1993 when he was signed by Lotus to replace akkinen. This was to be his best season, with a sixth place in Brazil and 7th in Monaco. His season was cut short by a bad accident during practice for the Belgian GP and he was replaced by Pedro Lamy. By 1994 Lotus were in decline and Zanardi was now the test driver for otus, as Lamy had kept his seat. When Pedro was also injured during testing, Zanardi was back in the race car. He raced in 10 GPs in 1994 with his best result being 9th in Spain. He is now in the Indy series, where he is doing very well, winning races nd in with a chance of the title. Zorzi Renzo Zorzi started 7 GPs, with his best result being 6th in Brazil in 977. His first race was the 1975 Italian GP, where he finished 14th in his Williams FW03. Another Williams drive came his way in 1976, this time in Brazil where he was 9th. In 1977, he had a sponsored drive in the Shadow team, and he raced 5 time for them. He suffered four mechanical failures and only had one finish - that 6th in Brazil. Zunino Ricardo Zunino entered F1 in 1979 with Brabham, replacing the retired Lauda for the last two races. He finished a credible 7th in his first appearance for the team. He was kept on for 1980, but was replaced mid season by Hector Rebaque. His final days in F1 were spent at Tyrrell. He competed in the first two races for them, finishing 13th both times. He was then replaced by Michale Alboreto. Zakspeed The German Zakspeed team competed in F1 from 1985 to 1989, racing 53 times. Their debut was the 1985 Portuguese GP and their last appearance was the 1989 Japanese GP. Martin Brundle was their most successful driver, managing 5th place in the 1987 San Marino GP. They were sponsored by the West cigarette brand that now has links with the McLaren Mercedes team. Errr, ummmmm......... Well what can I say? Obviously I am very sorry for the inconvenience caused by our list server and I can assure you all that we did not ask it to send out multiple copies of the newsletter. It seems most people got 6 copies, though the record stands at 23. I was away in Dublin last weekend, so I didn't know anything had gone wrong until I logged in to pick up my weekend mail. Three hours and 4000 messages later, I had a pretty good idea that omething was amiss. I am still getting 3000+ messages a day so responses to any messages that have been sent in will be delayed while I try to clear my mailbox out. We will be setting up our new list server soon, until then we will have to end the newsletter out in batches of 10,000 so that we can minimise any roblems that might occur. Once again, sorry. Hakkinen Loses Spa Result The enquiry into the McLaren fuel irregularity has upheld the initial findings and consequently Mika Hakkinen has been stripped of his third place. Early indications are that no-one will inherit 6th place, but the other points scoring drivers will all move up one place. McLaren have also been fined 50,000 USD UK Qualifying Coverage Due to the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, ITV will not be screening coverage of the qualifying session for this weekend's Italian GP. Radio 5 will also be covering the funeral, so if you live in the UK and don't have satellite - you won't know what the score is until it appears on Ceefax. I don't know if ITV have any plans to screen the session later on Saturday. Silverstone Tests Good news! More free Silverstone test sessions are on the way. September 9, 10 and 11 will see most teams preparing for the Austrian GP. I am hoping to go there on the Thursday (9th) always assuming I manage to actually get there without crashing my car! Fisichella Case Goes To Court The wrangle between Benetton and Jordan is going to court. Jordan and Benetton both insist that they have the driver for 1998 and the legal dispute will now be settled in the high court. The case should start next week. Panis Back Olivier Panis has driven a car for the first time. He drove a Formula3 car at Le Castallet yesterday (Wednesday) and said afterwards that he felt comfortable. Olivier is expected to try a Formula1 car there next week. Ferrari To Use Step2 Ferrari are expected to use the Step2 version of their engine at Monza. It will definitely be used for qualifying and it is possible that it will be used in the race too. Revised Arrows For Monza Arrows should have a revised version of the A18 for Monza. TWR have refined the weight distribution and the car will also sport revised engine mapping. I guess they have changed it to a system where the driver can use the throttle for the whole race ;-) Muller Breaks Leg Arrows test driver Jorg Muller has suffered a broken leg in a testing accident at Barcelona. He was testing the TWR prepared Nissan, when a brake failure caused him to crash heavily at turn 4. Initial reports suggest he may be back in the seat within three weeks!! Both Bridgestone and Peugeot are said to be keen to have Hill's services for ext year. It is thought that they have both offered financial support to the Prost team and their efforts to secure Hill. Williams Williams have again stressed that they are happy with the performance of Heinz Harald Frentzen. Williams have said that their driver just needs a it of time to get the best out of the car. Frentzen has a two year contract with the team which they are keen to honour. Monza Preview The Italian GP is one of the BIG races on the calendar. The track, like pa, Hockenheim and Silverstone, should suit the powerful cars. We can expect Jordan, McLaren, Ferrari and Williams to all be near the front, with errari probably being the main contenders. The Maranello team test here more than the other teams, so they should get on the pace much quicker, giving them a real chance of two good finishes. I expect Irvine to do well here. The other Italian based Italian team (I know Benetton are Italian, but they are based in England) Minardi should also improve their usual grid ositions here. In last weeks testing Jordan went extremely well, and this could be their best chance of a win from the front. Williams will be hoping that they can improve on their recent form, and Jacques in particular needs a good result to close the gap at the top of he drivers table. For my money, I can see Ferrari getting both cars on the podium, probably joined by Fisichella. For some reason the ListServ has been sending out multiple copies of the newsletter. We have now found out why (we think) and hopefully it will be back to ormal (well, as near normal as we ever get) from now on. Once again let me just take this opportunity to apologise to you all. Also would like to ask two things. 1. Please don't e-mail me if it goes wrong. I am on the list too, as the first address and the last. I know when it all goes wrong, and as much as I appreciate your feedback and comments, getting over 10,000 e-mails telling me the server messed up does nothing other than fill up my mail box :-p 2. If you have sent in an e-mail with the subject Re: Formula1 News issue 091 or 092, then it will have been deleted. I had way too many of these to ever read and all I could do was bin them off. If you had a request, observation, comment or some news send it in again. A-Z Many of you have e-mailed me asking about a complete copy of the A-Z. Well, good news!. It is nearly compiled and I will be creating a new section on the web site to hold this and other files that originate from the news letter. The A-Z is also being illustrated (photos, diagrams etc.) and this version (acrobat) will be posted too when it is finished. The text only version should be finished this weekend. As a replacement to the A-Z we will be starting two new features, that will run in alternate weeks. "Rear View Mirror" will look at past races, and as there are some 560 races or so that we haven't covered it will run for some time. I expect that we can put two to four in each issue at about 200 words per race. The section that will alternate with Rear View Mirror (for now) will look t the rules and regulations that govern F1. We aim to cover things such as it stop regs, the flags, how abandoned starts are dealt with, car design etc. Due to the number of races in September, these will probably not begin ntil October 8th (Issue 097) Alesi To Stay At Benetton? It is thought that Jean Alesi and Gerhard Berger have both been offered the chance of a drive at Benetton next year. There is only one seat up for grabs, which Benetton hope will be taken by Fisichella. In the light of the FIA contracts ruling and the possibility that the high court finds in Jordan's favour, Benetton need to have other options open to them. Berger has said that he does not want to drive for Benetton next year, hich just leaves Alesi as the replacement for Fisichella. Berger Offered BMW Deal Gerhard Berger has apparently been offered the testing role at BMW, while they design and test their F1 engine. BMW will be active in F1 from 2000, but they need an experienced F1 driver to help them with the development of their engine. Berger is thought to be at the top of their wish list. Panis Makes Comeback Olivier Panis has progressed to the next level of his recovery. He drove is Prost Mugen Honda at Magny Cours today, clocking a best time of 1.14.5 hich would probably have seen him on pole position at this year's French GP. Olivier is expected to be back in race trim soon, possibly in time for the Luxembourg GP. Jordan / Benetton In Court Jordan and Benetton started their fight over Giancarlo Fisichella today. he case is being dealt with in the high court, and will be dealt with as quickly as possible due to the driver situation at this time of the year. Jordan are hopeful, after the FIA contracts authority found in their vour. Hill To Stay At Arrows? The latest rumour I have heard is that Hill might stay with Arrows. Arrows have John Barnard and TWR's 250 Million pound facility behind next year's car. For the first time in many years, every team has major design changes to their car and it could be that Barnard will give Arrows a much needed oost. Hills other possible options, Jordan and Prost will both have to settle new engines into new cars. The Prost car being designed by a low profile engineer. Arrows are thought to be close to announcing either a deal with Brian Hart, for his new V10 engine, or the retention of the Yamaha unit - but under Hart's control rather than John Judd. Williams / BMW Deal Official The long rumoured and long expected BMW / Williams deal has finally been announced. Williams will use BMW engines, designed in Munich from the year 2000. Williams will continue to use their current Renault engines until then, though it is expected that BMW will provide substantial amounts of cold ard cash to help Williams pay for the engines - which will be supplied by Mecachrome at a cost of around 13 Million UKP per season. Coulthard Comments On Hill David Coulthard has joined the growing band of people that have voiced concern over the future of Damon Hill after the current world champion turned down McLaren's offer of a drive. Coulthard said "we will never know if Damon has made a mistake..........I don't even know if the reports are true. All I know is that money should ot be the sole priority, but the opportunity to win races." McLaren's win in Italy was the first race in which Adrian Newey had any significant input on the car, a coincidence perhaps - but still a good omen ;-) Fittipaldi Survives Plane Crash Former World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi has survived a light aircraft crash. The plane that he was piloting suffered engine failure and Emerson and his six year old son crashed into a swamp. The (relatively) soft landing left Emerson with a broken vertebrae. His son only suffered cuts and bruises. The attending doctor said the crash would probably have proved fatal if it were on solid ground. Bans For Coulthard And Villeneuve David Coulthard and Jacques Villeneuve have both been given suspended bans for yellow flag infringements during the warm up session. This is Villeneuve's third suspended ban this season and consequently his ban is now suspended for nine races, which will probably take him through o next year's Monaco GP. Coulthard's ban runs until the end of this season. Monza Results David Coulthard scored his second win of the season at the Italian GP. The young Scot drove a flawless race and with the aid of a slick pit stop he as able to take the lead in the race. The win will be welcomed by McLaren who were stripped of their third place at Spa due to fuel irregularities. Jean Alesi led the early part of the race and finished a strong second, ith Heinz Harald Frentzen completing the podium line up. Jacques Villeneuve was fifth, with his main rival Schumacher sixth. Schumacher now has a ten point lead with four races to go. 1 D. Coulthard McLaren Mercedes 1.17.04.609 2 J. Alesi Benetton Renault + 1.937 3 H. H. Frentzen Williams Renault + 4.343 4 G. Giancarlo Fisichella was relegated to fourth place followed by Villeneuve, Hakkinen and Schumacher. Alesi was the quickest in the early part of the race and he soon began to set fastest laps as he pulled away from Frentzen. By the end of lap 3, lesi was 1.9 seconds ahead, increasing that to 2.77 seconds by the end of lap four. His lead then settled and he remained about 2.9 seconds ahead for ome time. Behind him, Coulthard was giving Frentzen a tough time, pressing the Williams for second place. These two were pulling away from fourth placed Fisichella and for the first 20 laps the order remained the same. Between lap 16 and 20, Hakkinen, Frentzen, Coulthard and Villeneuve all posted new fastest lap times. Frentzen and Coulthard began to close in on Alesi and by lap 24 the Benetton driver's lead had been cut to 0.799 seconds. The race changed when the pit stops began. Williams were first, with Villeneuve and then Frentzen coming in. After Fisichella had pitted the running order was Alesi, Coulthard, Hakkinen, Schumacher, Berger and rvine. Alesi and Coulthard came in together, leaving Hakkinen to lead the race and set a new fastest lap. Coulthard's stop was 7.8 seconds, Alesi's was 8.7 seconds. The McLaren got back out in front of the Benetton and effectively led the race. On the road the running order was actually Schumacher, Coulthard, Alesi, Frentzen, Hakkinen and Fisichella. Schumacher, Hakkinen and Berger all pitted on lap 34, Hakkinen having to it again a few laps later with a suspected puncture. By lap 38, Coulthard led Alesi by 2.9 seconds. Frentzen was third, followed by Fisichella, Villeneuve and Schumacher. Lap 38 also saw Ralf Schumacher and Johnny Herbert touch wheels, causing Herbert to go off at over 180 mph. Ralf Schumacher pitted for inspection to his car and then retired a lap later with handling problems caused by the incident. Mika Hakkinen continued to press on, even though he was well outside the points positions. He set the fastest lap of the race on lap 48 (1.24.808) while chasing Damon Hill, who retired when his Yamaha engine gave out. The race finished with Coulthard crossing the line ahead of Alesi. Frentzen joined them on the podium with Fisichella fourth, Villeneuve fifth and Schumacher sixth. Man of the match: David Coulthard - flawless. News Services We have changed the news pages on the web server and now the News and gossip, news archive, weekly e-mail subscription form and the new daily ews e-mail service are all grouped on a single page entitled (rather imaginatively we thought) News Services. Contacting Us While we are always pleased to hear from people on the list, if you are going to write to us try not to resend the whole newsletter with your e-mail, we've already read it (we get the first copy!) We can be contacted using either "Neil@bigvern.demon.co.uk" or "F1@bigvern.demon.co.uk". Formula1 News Back Issues If you are a new or recent subscriber to Formula1 News, back issues can be obtained from the home page under the news services link. You might have to save the pages as "text" and view them in your word processor to get the text to wrap properly. The newsletters are formatted in Courier 12pt (I know it is a sh*te font, but everyone has a copy) and are best viewed in this or in your favourite monospaced font. You may have to adjust the point size if you use a font other than Courier to get columns to line up properly. --- Blue Wave/DOS v2.30 [NR] * Origin: The Power Station * (403) 963-1859 * (1:342/5) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 142 AUTO RACING Ref: EDM00008 Date: 09/12/97 From: IAN CAMPBELL Time: 02:07pm \/To: ALL (Read 2 times) Subj: 2 F-1 News 093 How To Change Your Address/Unsubscribe etc. If you want to change the e-mail address at which you receive F1News, just send an e-mail to F1Admin@bigvern.demon.co.uk with the subject "change address" containing your old address and your new address.
