His two stop strategy worked fine. Moreover, he overtook Hakkinen and Fisichella after his stops. F1 world seemed upside down this weekend with the strong Benetton (which I'd rather ranked as a middle class team) and Williams as weak as hardly before: poor qualifying results 5th (Frentzen) and 9th (Villeneuve) and both cars out of the race. Frentzen crashed into Irvine's rear tire in the very first curve and Villeneuve got stuck in the gravel after 33 laps. Even before he never made it better than 5th position. Frentzen was very angry with Irvine after the race, he blamed him to have tried to force him into the gravel. But I think Irvine was in front and on the inside of that curve, so it was Frentzen's task to reduce speed early enough to let Irvine pass. Jordan was very strong again this weekend, but Fisichella was the unlucky fellow for this race. He kept his 2nd position of the starting grid until an exploding tire forced him back to sith position and he finally didn't finish. At least he got his first Ferrari ride, on top of Schumacher's car after the end of the race... Ferrari again got into trouble: Irvine managed to get back to the pits with- out his rear tire, but his car was too badly damaged and finally got on fire. Michael Schumacher had a second -unplanned- pit stop, as Ferrari dind't fill in enuogh fuel at his regular one. I was said that the fueling device didn't work properly- in this case it wasn't Ferrari's fault as these devices are placed at the teams' proposal by the FIA. After all, even this second pit top couldn't hinder Schumacher's second place, which gives him a comfortable 10 point lead of Villeneuve after 10 Grand Prix... Finally: ======== 150.000 spectators on the tribunes of Hockenheim, an estimated 30.000 camping in the forest around the track, most of them spending their whole holidays there made a brilliant panorama for the race. They did not only consume ca. 100.000 barbecue saussages but also drunk approx. 1.000.000 litres of beer, so I wonder if they were still able to follow the race! 50.000 Tickets have been sold for next year already...
