RW> But, in line with your thinking, racing todays technology would > put those two on the track. So maybe you have to give them 87 octane unleaded to run on, or mandate rear axle ratios on particular tracks or... The people on the wrenches have consistently done more with less. I was also thinking about using the "clunkier" sedan bodies - and assuming that they could be kept on the ground at racing speeds this would also slow things down - maybe enough to make use of a (potentially) more powerful engine. It seems that 200 mph is a target maximum racing speed at the super-speedways. An unrestricted car in the current configuration would run -?-. (230-240 mph??) As I understand the argument here (and elsewhere) against restrictor plate racing, it is that the cars don't accelerate to make passes (and I assume this to mean from 170 to 200 mph - or so). I have never been able to figure out how an unrestricted race would differ except that the base speed might rise to 200 from 170 and top to 230 or so. I don't think that there would be much "snap" in either event. Reading the posting by Ralf Dickhut(sp) about slowing down F1 it seems that they are concentrating on lowering _cornering_ speeds. Taking 30-40 mph out of the cornering speeds at Nascar super-speedways - say by trading less rubber for carbon-fibre brakes - would bring the acceleration back to high speed racing. Would it be better racing - I don't know. Driver skill and tactics seem to be the order in super-speedway racing over brute mechanical force and courage on the short tracks. * * * Didn't expect to see the end of the 600 last night but it ended up that I saw to the first caution and then the last 45 or so laps. Edited from information on the NHRA website - referring to the 1996 campaign. *** Schmidt, from Indianapolis, has changed the face of Pro Stock the last few years with his engine-leasing program. Many drivers began to lease his powerful engines in 1994, and he has 19 clients in the Pro Stock pits this season. Other prominent engine builders, such as Richard Maskin and Larry Morgan, also started similar programs. "I had to figure out how to make a living racing because I get no factory help at all," Schmidt said. "I don't know how anybody can argue with the fact because of Maskin and I, we've made the sport more competitive and exciting." *** Before Schmidt's novel program, teams built their own engines. That created a wide disparity in competition, as some teams lacked the knowledge or budget required to build a powerful Pro Stock engine. The result was disparity, as fields were separated from first to 16th by more than a tenth of a second. This year, Schmidt's trickle-down philosophy of engine power has helped shrink the gap to as little as five-hundredths of a second at many races. There is power for the masses. *** For a guy who builds engines for a living, nothing has been more satisfying this season for Steve Schmidt than his program to build a Mopar engine. Schmidt has built Pro Stock and sportsman engines based on General Motors specificiations for years, but this year he decided to build a powerplant based on a design by Mopar, the parts and performance arm of Chrysler. *** Couldn't find a listing of his current clients but I will keep an eye out. After the start the whole race was dominated by the 50 (!) pit stops the 22 drivers made. Almost no real motorSPORT on the track, but rather a mechanics' contest. These pitstops also made the whole race extremly confusing. I thought the pilots did't even try to overtake because they knew their opponents will have to pit in sooner or later anyway. Heinz-Harald Frentzen later blamed his tyres for his poor performance, all three sets were worn off after and full off bubbles and a few laps. If this is more than a cheap excuse, one might think he gets lesser materials then his teammate Villeneuve, who overlaped him in lap 41. Remember those break broblems only Frentzen had... Jordan might have made a step forward to getting Peugeot engines next year, as Fisichella first race lap record for Jordan could convince them to supply the team besides Prost next year. Last time I wrote Benetton had left F1 upper class already in my opinion. Let's see if Alesi's third place marks a turning point for the team.
