EF>AH, well... That would sure explain it! There are so much discussion EF>about who will have what number, and while this is the only one we know, EF>I'm waiting myself to see which system the FIA will use! The defending driving champion is entitled to carry #1, regardless of the team he's driving for, and his CURRENT teammate gets #2. The defending constructors champion gets #3 and #4..., and it's up to the team owner to decide which of his drivers gets which number (Teams actually must designate an official #1 and #2 driver). This was all nicely reflected in 1995 when Michael Schumaker won the driver championship AND the constructors championship for Benneton. When Schumaker moved to Ferarri in the off-season, he took his #1 (and #2 for Irvine) with him, but because Benneton won the constructors championship, they retained #3 (for Alesi) and #4 (for Berger), while Hill, who finished second in the drivers championship, and Williams, who finished second in the constructors championship, ended up with #5 (and #6 for Villeneuve). Of course, this may change slightly if teams are allowed to increase to three cars and drivers, but you wont see that in 1997. BTW..., all numbers are assigned to each team by the FIA prior to the start of each season. DJ> I wouldn't be surprised if Jeff won ALL the races next year. I don't think so. A lot of drivers have shown huge potential this season and 1997 shows a lot of promise as far as variety in the top 10 is concerned. Ricky Craven in the #25 car is certainly going to be one driver to watch, Johnny Benson Jr. will probably get better after one full season with Bahari Racing and drivers like John Andretti, Hut Stricklin and Jeff Burton are probably going to be contenders in more than one race next year. I know we tend to say that every year, but 1997 looks like it'll be a very interesting season. Martin ... Welcome to AutoRace. CR> I do believe Gordon (barring any unforseen wrecks or mechanical CR> problems) will win again this year. I'm sure Jeff got you to think again about that prediction, just one day after you posted your message. That's all right, bad luck happens to the best of them and he's just going to have to fight a little harder for the championship. Right now, Terry Labonte and Dale Jarrett are real contenders for the championship and I would love to see either one of them take it home. And hey, with 3 races left, even Dale Earnhardt can still make a comeback and win it. It's going to be a really interesting battle right to the end. Martin ... This only furthers my point that Sterling leaves much JB> to be desired when it comes to his performance on the short tracks. I'm glad you enjoyed the stats I sent you. Hey, maybe Sterling and Morgan-McClure will cure their short track problems at some point in the future. I've seen some drivers who, from one race to the other, showed dramatic improvement on the road courses. All they had to do was to concentrate on the one problem area and work at it until they got some results. Sterling's not a bad driver, he just needs to improve his versatility and I'm sure he's well aware of that. Martin ...
