Definitely glad I picked up this echo. As for brand preference, I've been wanting to get one of those decals for my Mustang in which Calvin (of Calvin and Hobbes) is urinating on the Chevy emblem. Before I get blasted, though, let me quickly add that I want to get exactly the same one (with him urinating on the Ford emblem) for my Suburban. I've got a Chevy, a Ford, and a Dodge, all of which I love dearly. As my boss told me once when I was griping about the quality of American cars (I was an import mechanic at the time), "They're all junk, no matter who makes them. Otherwise there wouldn't be mechanics." To bring this back to more of a racing vein, I get passed just as often by Chevies as by Ford and Dodges. Though, I must admit, I get passed by a lot more Porsches than by all other cars combined. --- DB 1.58/003174 * Origin: PC-HELP BBS (1:280/31) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 142 AUTO RACING Ref: DEM00027 Date: 10/17/96 From: BOB ZUMBRUNNEN Time: 10:57pm \/To: RIC JOHNSON (Read 5 times) Subj: Re: This echo > BZ> Is this echo for spectators, participants, or both? > BZ> I've attended 6 driving schools at Heartland Park this > BZ> year, and the "lil pony" has shown itself to be up to the > BZ> task. > If you've had any contact with the workers you've probably met a > number of my fellow DMVR members working those events. I've had people tell me I should try oval track, since there are two such tracks nearby, but I'm quite protective of my car and it looks like that kind of racing is just *begging* for body damage. Granted, I'm not entirely risk-free the moment the car hits *any* track, but I like my odds better on road course. Of course, autocross appears to be the safest of all, but, for me, one of the biggest thrills I get on the track is hauling the car down from 120 to 20 in 300 feet for a right-hand hairpin, and trying to shorten that distance even more.... > ___ > X MegaMail 2.10 #1607:Friends don't let friends early apex! I've always loved this tagline. Brian St. Denis uses this in all his posts to the 50 Mailing list on the net. The approach I'm taking isn't too expensive. I'm going for my SCCA competition license next year. I'm learning/honing my driving skills right now at Driving Schools. Check with your local car clubs (BMW, Porsche, Corvette, Mustang, etc) and the SCCA to see when they're being held near you. Of course, this approach assumes you've got a trackworthy car to begin with. It doesn't have to be fancy or expensive. Anything with inherently good power and/or handling characteristics will do. I see a lot of $50k+ Porsches, but I also seel a lot of $5k Mustangs, Civics, Fieros, Probes, etc. I once saw a Festiva on the track, and it was actually looking pretty good. As far as cost goes, I started out with a 91 Mustang GT I bought new, so it's been paid for for quite a while. A good, solid car, even if the front/rear weight balance is way out of whack and the brakes are worthless. Driving Schools typically cost $150 to $200 for a full weekend of fast track driving. I figure I'm using up about $300 per event in brake components (pads and rotors, mostly -- my rear drums hardly do any work, so they last a while). I'm using about 20 gallons of fuel per day, so call it $60 per event for uel. About $150 per event for hotel accomodations. I've only run Hoosiers once, but it looked like I used no more than 1/8 of their useful lives up in 1 day (I usually get about 90-100 minutes of track time per day), so I'm guessing it'll average out to about $150 per event for tires in my case. I would expect tire costs on most other cars to be lower. My Mustang is bone stock in the suspension, which is hard on *any* tires. Also, because it has drum rear brakes, it is extremely abusive to the front brakes. Some folks at the Driving Schools (not many, though) just run good street tires. I did so for 4 events. However, during my 3rd event, I felt like the tires were my most limiting factor, so I'm glad I changed to the Hoosiers. I felt like I was driving at 110% of my street tires, but am at about 80% of my Hoosiers, which is a very comfortable margin for now. So, given that I already own the car free and clear, I'm spending about $800 or so per event (I go to one per month). I think the fun/dollars ratio is very good. For just starting out, though, I would think one could easily do this for under $300 per event. Just make sure you're starting out with a SOLID car, for obvious reasons. I just re-read this, and noticed where you're from.
