Rather than having the 96-97 season end at the Indy 500 as originally planned, the series will now continue through the end of 1997, and will thereafter be conducted on a more normal calendar year. The two races already run will still count toward the championship, with next year's races at Loudon and Las Vegas becoming the second races at those tracks for the 96-97 season. rj ___ X MegaMail 2.10 #1607:"Is this Heaven?" While there will be a CART race on Memorial Day weekend at Chris Pook's new oval at Gateway International, the race will be run on Saturday (with live coverage by ABC) rather than on Sunday directly against Indy. However, the race will NOT be the US500. The US500 will be run in July at Michigan on the traditional weekend for the Marlboro 500. Before the start of the Charlotte race, I told a friend that the best way (to me) the race could possibly go was with Mark winning, Terry second, and Gordon back in 30th or 40th. I should come that close in the pick-6 . We all know how good Gordon is - i'd love to see Terry take the championship though. He really will have earned it the hard way having been ho-hum for so many years. Now that DE is pretty much out of championship competition, it doesn't matter much to me where he finishes,, although for some strange reason I enjoyed watching him get up into the top-ten. Go figure... > shows how good all those cars in Hendrick Racing are. sad to see Ken > will be leaving though he has had a tough year. I've alwaays thought that if Kenny couldn't get a win with Hendrick, then he's just not gonna win in Winston Cup racing. I'm not so sure of that anymore. A strong ONE CAR team that can focus all it's efforts on getting Kenny and their car into victory lane could be just the ticket. =Bob --- GEcho 1.00 * Origin: Rock In A Hard Place, Chesapeake, Va (1:271/560) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 142 AUTO RACING Ref: DEI00003 Date: 10/10/96 From: MARTIN VINCENT Time: 06:24pm \/To: TIM MCVEY (Read 5 times) Subj: Shirley Muldowney Hi Tim TM> Didn't Shirley Muldowney drive a Funny Car at one time? In practice Friday for today's running of the Comdata 200 for the NASCAR Late Model Stock Cars at Nashville Speedway USA, Cecil Chunn ran into the rear end of the stopped car of Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Chunn's engine caught fire, and that quickly spread to the leaking fuel from the younger Earnhardt's car. Both drivers were quick to exit their cars unhurt. The fire truck at the speedway was on the scene in a matter of seconds. But the Purple K tank malfunctioned and the firemen were not able to extinguish the flames. As a result, both cars burned to the ground. So where does Bobby Hamilton come into this? Hamilton owns the #43 STP Chevy that 16 year old Casey Atwood drove to a 7th place finish in the 1996 Late Model Stock Car championship at Nashville. A few races ago, Atwood tried out a Ford Thunderbird to see if he could run better, but didn't like the feel of the car. So, Hamilton had the Ford sitting back at his shop in Mt. Juliet. Earnhardt's car hadn't even stopped smoking before Hamilton had offered the younger Earnhardt the use of the Ford for today's race. Earnhardt consulted his father, who said "You're there to race. Go for it." They taped over the 4 and the #3 STP Ford driven by Dale Earnhardt, Jr. was born. Earnhardt qualified the car 7th out of nearly 50 cars to take qualifying laps. Atwood, Earnhardt's temporary teammate for the weekend, qualified 8th, only 0.001 second off of Earnhardt's time. Earnhardt ran well in today's race, but eventually dropped out of the race with transmission problems. The transmission gave way on the first lap, and Earnhardt had to fight the car to get it going on the restarts. He'd dropped back to the end of the pack on the first lap, but my the mid point of the race, was running just outside the top five. Atwood also ran well, staying in the top five all day long. But Atwood's day also ended early, when a lapped car in front of him hit the wall, and Atwood spun to avoid hitting him. Atwood's car hit the inside turn 3 wall hard, but he was OK. Hamilton will start dead last in the 40-car field in tomorrow's 16th running of the All American 400. In qualifying Friday, Hamilton's time wasn't good enough to make the top 28 spots that were locked in. He wasn't able to start today's 25-lap last chance race due to a blown motor. Hamilton made the field on one of two promotor's provisional spots, with the other spot going to Steve Allison. It would have been easy for Hamilton to say "Hey, Earnhardt cost me my first Winston Cup win in the spring at Rockingham, so that's too bad for his son." But he didn't. To me, that shows someone with true class. Glen Harness Copyright 1996 by Glen Harness, all rights reserved.
