NASCAR Online: 1997 NASCAR schedule 1997 NASCAR Winston Cup Series schedule NASCAR welcomes new Texas, California speedways to family 1997 Schedule | Back to News "This possibly is the most anticipated schedule in NASCAR history." BILL FRANCE JR. DARLINGTON, S.C. With four noticeable changes from recent years, including the largest number of races in the modern era, the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, in an unprecedented move, announced its 1997 NASCAR Winston Cup Series schedule today, three months earlier than usual. The announcement was made on NASCAR Online and at Darlington Raceway, NASCAR's oldest speedway and site of today's Mountain Dew Southern 500, in which Dale Jarrett is shooting for the Winston Select Million bonus. Consisting of 32 championship point events and two "special" events, the NASCAR Winston Cup Series season will again kick off with the "Super Bowl" of stock car racing, the Daytona 500 Feb. 16 at Daytona International Speedway and extend through the Nov. 16 season finale at Atlanta Motor Speedway. It also marks the addition of one new market, Fort-Worth/Dallas, and a return to another, Los Angeles. "This schedule has been the topic of a lot of discussion for a long time now," said NASCAR president Bill France. "With the changes that already have been announced and the changes that haven't been before today, this possibly is the most anticipated schedule in NASCAR history and we're very happy that things have fallen into place to allow us to announce the agenda for the next season earlier than ever before." The first new date on the schedule arrives in week No. 6 with the running of the inaugural Texas 500 at the new Texas Motor Speedway in Forth Worth. As a result, the spring event at Bristol Motor Speedway will move back a week to April 13 from it's "traditional" spot of the first weekend in April. The new California Speedway, outside of Los Angeles, will host its first NASCAR Winston Cup event June 22, the weekend date once held by the Riverside facility in Southern California, making up the second of the division's three trips to the Western United States. Officials for the Texas and California facilities each recently announced agreements to have their events broadcast live on network television. After a week off the series will return to Daytona Beach, Fla., for race No.16, signaling the halfway mark of the season. During the final one-third of the season, the NASCAR Winston Cup Series will return to the New Hampshire International Speedway for a second time, Sept. 14, marking the third noticeable change to the schedule. The fourth change is the move of the "traditional" July date at Talladega Superspeedway to Oct. 12. "I think this schedule signifies the tremendous growth NASCAR racing in general and NASCAR Winston Cup racing in particular are experiencing right now," France said. "And we believe the positioning of the new venues and the realignment of other ones will enhance that growth. The quality of competition has the demand for NASCAR Winston Cup racing at an all-time high. We hope, obviously, that continues." Yeah, sure NASCAR could get another sponsor, but why should they have to when the have been sponsored by Winston for as long as I can remember? I don't think this should turn into a smoker vs. non-smoker thread either, but when someone is threatening a major sport such as NASCAR Winston Cup, I think that is a subject which needs to be addressed. That could change the whole look of racing. That means racers will lose sponsors. If they get away with this, what will be next, banning sponsorship by beer companies? Where do we draw the line?
