Hmmm...Robbie Gordon in Winston Cup, now that would be interesting. Do you really think he would fare better by driving something that has doors and fenders on it? Not that he doesn't have what it takes to run WC, I just don't see him making the transisiton without becoming the new "Mr. Excitement" for a spell. If I were Felix, I don't know if I would take that chance. No matter which way Felix goes, (be it Ford or Chevy) it will be a step forward, so why not take full advantage of that and give the seat to a more experienced hand. Let somebody else work the bugs out of Robbie, (perhaps K-H, they're used to having a "shredder" for a driver) and make a play for him if he develops into something on down the road. A year or two in a Busch car wouldn't be a bad idea either. jb ___ Blue Wave/QWK v2.12 --- PCBoard (R) v15.21/M 10 * Origin: Fantasy Land BBS * Springfield, IL * (217)535-1005 (1:2430/2) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 142 AUTO RACING Ref: DBY00036 Date: 07/26/96 From: PETER CURLE Time: 08:51am \/To: ALL (Read 5 times) Subj: Formula 1 ******************** (-: Formula 1 NEWS :-) ******************** The Electronic Formula 1 News Service for the Internet World Wide Web server at http://www.enigmatic.co.uk/formula1 *** July 24th 1996 *** *** Issue Number 36 *** **************************************************************** In This Issue *Alesi Tops Last Testing *Ferrari *Forti *Herbert Outshines Frentzen *BMW On The Way ? *Arrows Sponsorship Extended *German GP Preview *Durango Delayed *Driver Rumours (latest) *F3000 Round Three *News Back Issues *The Best Driver Ever? Alan Jones Alesi Tops Last Testing Jean Alesi topped the test times as the teams all prepared for this weekend's German GP. Alesi managed a fastest lap of 1.08.62, Damon Hill was second fastest with 1.08.99. Berger and Barrichello were third and fourth fastest. McLaren will be encouraged by Alain Prost's performance, finishing fifth fastest ahead of Villeneuve who struggled in sixth with a best time of 1.11.66. Ferrari Ferrari are hoping that the latest revisions to the F310.1.1.1etc. will bring them a race finish this weekend. The car will have a new under tray and rear suspension at Hockenheim, but the seven speed gearbox will not be used yet. Schumacher and Irvine have both been testing heavily and have run race distances during testing. Schumacher is confident that the modifications make the car much better to drive. "I think we can be very competitive this weekend.....the car has been improved a lot, so I think we are in a position to go for it" Forti Meanwhile, at Forti..... The engine payment situation still seems unclear. We have not hear that Forti have settled their debts yet and if that remains the same up to the weekend we can expect Forti to just turn out for one or two qualifying laps. If they do not appear during a race weekend they are liable to a fine of around 400,000 USD from the FIA. Herbert Outshines Frentzen Sauber's last test session before the German race saw Johnny Herbert emerge fastest of the two Sauber drivers. The team were testing at Nogaro (Circuit Paul Armagnac, France) BMW On The Way ? This week BMW are coming back to Formula1, next week may be different but here goes. The BMW proposal to return to F1 was rejected by the advisory board. The board is now said to be finalising BMW's next five year motorsport decision. Renault's announcement that they are leaving F1 has supposedly added to the BMW desire to return. BMW have been linked with Williams for some time now. Arrows Sponsorship Extended Arrows have had their sponsorship deal with Power House extended to cover the 1999 season. Arrows may get to run the new Hart engine this weekend. German GP Preview The German GP at Hockenheim is one of the fastest circuits on the calendar. Last year Schumacher won with an average speed of 138.12 mph, the year before it was won by Berger with an average speed of 139.36 mph. The circuit has four main sections, the two long straights which both have chicanes half way down, the famous Ostkurve at one end and the grandstand complex at the other. The circuit is not too technical and is fast. Villeneuve should have little difficulty learning the track, and the long straights should benefit the Jordan and McLaren cars who both have good straight line speed. Ferrari have been testing to destruction following the British GP and surely they must have things sorted out now. It is likely to be a close finish, last year 10 seconds separated the first three. Williams, Benetton, McLaren, Jordan and Ferrari all have realistic chances of getting two cars in the points. It all comes down to reliability, the long straights kill cars, last year six cars retired with blown engines and four with gearbox problems. Of the fifteen retirements only Hill's spin was not a mechanical failure. Startline collisions are not uncommon at Hockenheim so it is important to be near the front. Durango Delayed The Durango car will not be unveiled just yet as the team are still trying to negotiate an engine deal. IT is expected that the car will now debut after the Italian GP. Durango are one of many teams hoping to enter F1 next year. Driver Rumours (latest) It's official, Hill will be staying at Williams next year. It's also official, Frentzen will be replacing Hill at Williams next year. There seem to be contradictory rumours floating around this week, all I can say is one of the above will probably turn out to be true. F3000 Round Three The F3000 season resumed last weekend at Enna in Sicily. Marc Goossens recorded his second career win. Joint championship leaders Brck and Mller had mixed fortunes. Alan Jones Alan Jones was the son of Stan Jones a famous Australian racer in the fifties, his GP debut was at the 1975 Spanish GP racing a Hesketh-Cosworth for the Stiller team. He raced four times, retiring from three races and finishing 11th in the fourth. After the Swedish GP the owner of the team packed up leaving Jones without a drive. His season was extended to eight races when Graham Hill offered him a drive in his team. His season ended with a fifth place in the German GP to score his first championship points. Alan then switched to the famous Durex sponsored Surtees team for 1976 and raced in all but the first two GPs. He scored more points by finishing fourth in Japan and fifth in Belgium and Britain. Another year, another team. This time he moved to the Shadow team where he scored his first GP win (Austria). Five other points finishes saw Alan finish seventh in the championship. In 1978 Jones move again, this time to the Williams team who were rebuilding themselves after splitting with Wolf. The FW06 was nearly there and Jones managed a 2nd place finish in the US GP East. Alan stayed with Williams for 1979, the FW06 was replaced by the FW07 when the European leg started. A poor start saw four retirements from five races but from the British GP on it was the best car around. Jones retired whilst leading the British GP, he then went on to win in Germany, Austria, Holland and Canada. 1980 was Williams and Alan's year. A win in the first race at Buenos Aires, third in Brazil got the season off to a good start. From the Belgian race onwards Jones finished on the podium of every race except Monaco and Holland. Winning in France, Britain, Canada and the US East. He took the title by 13 points. Alan decided that 1981 would be his last year in F1, he began the defence of his title by winning in the US West. Second in Brazil and fourth in Argentina helped him on his way. Four podium finishes including a win in Canada and a fourth in Austria were not enough and he finished third in the championship four points behind Piquet and three points behind Regazzoni. Alan did retire, but he was coaxed out of retirement by the Arrows team, he raced for them at the 1983 US GP West where he retired from the race and left F1 again. Not content with retiring twice, Jones came back in 1985 when he raced four times for the Haas team. He failed to finish in any of the races. 1986 was his last year in F1. Again racing for the Haas team, twelve retirements and two points finishes were a poor way to finish. Alan Jones raced 116 times winning 12. He qualified on pole position six times and set thirteen fastest laps. He was second 7 times and third 5 times. 11 of his wins were for Williams.
