Jody Scheckter Ferrari We all saw the unthinkable happen at Silverstone, Ferrari failing to get both cars to the first pit stop again. This time Schumacher suffered hydraulic failure which left him stuck in 6th gear and Irvine lost his differential bearing. The team are testing heavily at Monza and should race the F310 with all the new modifications at Hockenheim. Morale is surprisingly good and both Schumacher and Irvine look like they will be at Maranello next year. Benetton Protest Benetton lodged an official protest at the legality of the front wings on the Williams car after the British GP. They claimed that the end plates were not 10mm thick and so contravened FIA rules concerning leading edges. The Williams front wing was modified under pre race scrutineering advice at the Australian GP. The wing has remained unchanged (and legal) since that first race. The FIA rejected the protest and also told Benetton not to bother appealing. Korean GP? The prospect of a Korean GP emerged this week. The Korean track has been designed with help from Harvey Postlethwaite. The circuit is scheduled to be built in the Chollabuck-do area. This pitches Korea in with China and Indonesia as other nations hoping to host a second Pacific race (alongside Japan). Changes For Next Year Changes may be introduced next year to make overtaking easier. Revisions to aerodynamics are rumoured in order to lessen the negative effect of being too close to the car in front. Also brakes may be altered in an attempt to increase braking distances and improve the chances of out braking manoeuvres. F1 cars currently use carbon fibre brakes which can take the car from 190 mph to standstill in around 100 metres!! pulling about 5G in the process. Lavaggi To Race At Hockenheim Giancarlo Minardi has announced that Fisichella will be replaced by Lavaggi at the German GP. The two drivers, along with Marques, will be retained under contract. Rosset To Race All Season Riccardo Rosset will race on until the end of this season. His contract with Arrows was for the first 12 races but it has been extended to cover the whole of this season. New Hart Engine Does Well Arrows were allowed the new pneumatic valve Hart engine for qualifying at the British GP. The engine was not tested in full race form, but still managed to pull 1000 revs more than the engine used in the race. The chances of the engine racing in Germany look good. McLaren May Stick WITH MP4/11B It is believed that McLaren may stick with the short wheelbase MP4/11 for the rest of the season. Forti Forti did make it to the British GP, but unpaid engine bills meant that they could not race or practice. The cars did turn out for official qualifying but without any set up work from the free practice sessions they were never likely to make it to the grid. Forti are hoping that they can sort out their finances in time for the German GP. Silverstone Review Jacques Villeneuve won the second GP of his short F1 career, getting ahead of Hill at the start and leading into the first corner Jacques never looked back. Behind him Alesi, Hakkinen and Schumacher all managed to pass Hill who was relegated to fifth place. Ferrari's recent run of bad luck continued with Schumacher retiring on lap 3 while stuck in 6th gear and Irvine retiring on lap 5 with smoke pouring from the back of his car. Hill spun off on lap 26 due to a loose wheel nut and Alesi was also to retire through his brakes overheating. Gerhard Berger and Mika Hakkinen completed the podium line up while Barrichello, Coulthard and Brundle completed the top six. Brundle scoring another sixth place despite suffering a puncture. He was in their Formula2 team and they gave him a bonus drive in the 1972 US GP at Watkins Glen. He qualified 8th and managed to keep out of trouble to finish 9th. Still with McLaren in 1973 he was given a few races, he retired from all of them, the most notorious being the British GP where he spun at the beginning and managed to wipe out a good portion of the field. 1974 saw Ken Tyrrell offer Jody a full time seat. He managed to finish in the points nine times winning in Sweden and Britain, he managed to finish 3rd in the championship just 10 points behind the winner. Jody stayed with Tyrrell for 1975 and a win in Kyalami was the high point of his year. Five finishes outside the points meant that he could only manage seventh in the championship. His last year with Tyrrell saw him record one more victory. One that is perhaps his most famous. He won in Sweden in the Tyrrell P34 the six wheeler the only race that the car ever won. He also won in Britain but his car was disqualified and he was awarded second instead. He finished third in the championship again. In 1977 he moved to Walter Wolf racing where he got off to a brilliant start by winning the first race which was in Argentina. Two more wins and five podium finishes saw him finish second in the championship behind Niki Lauda. His second season with Wolf was not quite so rewarding. The two Lotus cars usually streaked off into the distance while Wolf tried to improve their car almost on a weekly basis. Jody raced the WR1, WR3, WR4, WR5 and WR6 that year. He did manage four podium finishes but that was only good enough for seventh in the championship. In 1979 Scheckter got the call from Maranello and he was off to Ferrari to partner Gilles Villeneuve. Though Villeneuve was quicker over a single lap Scheckter was more consistent. He finished in the points in all but the first and last races where he retired and the French GP where he finished seventh. He won in Belgium, Monaco and at Monza where he clinched the title. His last year in F1 was 1980, the Ferrari was no match for the Williams of Jones and Regazzoni and Jody struggled to finish in the points. A solitary fifth place in the US GP was no way for a champion to defend his title. He had planned it as his last season but was a little disappointed with the final results. He retired to the US after winning 10 out of his 112 races. He finished on the podium on 23 other occasions. 3 pole positions and 6 fastest laps show him as a consistent rather than blindingly quick driver. Testing, engines, Senna not signing his contracts til halfway through the season, all these contributed to Mike's demise in F1. However he chose to leave, he wasn't QUITE booted. I had a dream that year, since both Al Jr. and Mike had made noise about F1 rides, that an all American team could go to Europe and show what kind of drivers we had. (maybe even a Gurney chassis!) Oh well, the dream is gone, it looks like the only drivers leaving CART for F1 will be ones whose names are already familiar to the powers that be across the pond.
