Damm, I wish VCR's JB> were not expensive back then, cause I would die to see that race one more JB> time. I have faith in Jeff. He'll win #8 before Earnhardt does... I've followed Jeff's career ever sice I met him driving Sprint Cars at Knoxville when he was 15. He will go down as one of the all time legends... I wish I has his 200th on tape also... I DO have the end of his last race, and the retrospective that followed... As for Days of Thunder... That is one of my favorite movies ever. I'm not a real big N.A.S.C.A.R. fan, that's probably one of the main reasons I liked it... I helped a friend with his I.M.C.A. stock car for 5 years. I was crew chief for 2 years. He now drives Late Models in Tennessee. Anyway... We've watched that movie probablt 100 times or more... We can relate to a lot of what was happeneing in that movie. I bet it was a little closer to N.A.S.C.A.R. that what most people want to realize. Maybe not on a daily, week to week basis, but I'm sure a lot of what happened in the movie has happened in one wat, shape, or form at one time or another n N.A.S.C.A.R. history. As for the actual Harry Hyde, I can understand him eing upset, but it IS a movie, it IS hollywood... I like it. Nuff said... the Inmates are out... of The Asylum... Then who will be the King??? Jeff Gordon will win #8 before Earnhardt will. This is Earnhardt's last good year. After this year he will never crack the top 3... ML> Sure Petty had a few good teams to race against but that is just it, ML> there were only a few, just yesterday on NASCAR weekly Mark Martin ML> 15 years ago there were maybe 7 good teams and today you can double ML> no problem. DD> Apparently you have no clew as to what NASCAR was like back then. DD> Mostly it was the same half dozen drivers who won most of the races. DD> WOW! Just like today... Mark's comments aside. The facts don't bear DD> out. How many people won races last year? Lessee now... The LaBonte DD> brothers (that's two) and Jeffy (three) and Dale (four) Sterling (five) DD> and Dale (six) and Rusty 'n Mark (eight)... oh yeah Kyle fluked into DD> one here and there but mostly he putted around in the back. You've got <<>> DD> the same amount of real contenders today as you did back then. And DD> you've got the strokers who get lucky - just like you did back then. Richard Brickhouse (1969 Talladega) comes immediately to mind. ML> He has to do with everything, if they didn't race so many races each ML> year back then he'd no way have near 200 wins..Don't care who has the ML> second most wins, I look at championships! DD> Yeah, but they did have that many races and Richard did win 200 of DD> them suckers... even taking a year off to go drag (urk!) racing. It's DD> fact, deal with it, learn to live with it and move on. Richard being [...verbiage extirpated...] DD> remaining an approachable human being and a fan favourite when he had DD> every reason to get snooty. And for being the role model that all DD> successful NASCAR drivers model themselves on, whether thay recognise ... ... ... ... ... Amen!!! All everyone seems to want to do is compare wins and chanmpionships. What made Richard "King" is the fact that he just plain did more for major league stock car racing than any other driver before or since. Tim Richmond had the personality and the charisma to come close (A Hell of a lot closer than what Earnhardt has managed to do, so far, though I'm not forgetting his WWF "Bad Guy" image in the least, which was probably what NASCAR needed at the time) -> Technology is relative. Petty beat guys using technology that was -> available at the time. Racers today use what's available today. -> Technology, or having better cars today, has nothing to do with -> Richard being "The King"... so why do you bring it up? Richard Petty -> is "The King" and if Dale Earnhart (or anyone else) wins twenty -> Winston cups Richard will still be the King. Them's the facts, deal -> with it, learn to live with it and let's move on. Most (but obviously not ALL) of the BDEF's seem to be relative new comers to the NASCAR scene (less than 4-5 years). You can't debate with this group; they have no long-standing point of reference. Unfortunately the majority of the knowledge they have is based on 10-20 second sound bites during the racing commentary and on various racing shows (Inside NASCAR, NASCAR Today, Shop Talk, QVC, what-have-you). I've noticed that the vast majority of the BDEF's who compare his career to the overall accomplish- ments of Richard, weren't even around to see Petty in his hey-day. You almost never see more logical comparisons, such as Earnhardt to David Pearson, Lee Petty, Junior Johnson, Herb Thomas, Buck Baker, Fireball, Curtis Turner, Freddie Lorenzen, or Jim Paschal. Now, those comparisons _might_ have some substance. DD> Not so, Earnhart loyalist. Very few people feel as I do about Dale - DD> most either think he is goddlemighty or they think that if the earth DD> opened and swallowed him it would be appropriate - I respect his DD> abilities and enjoy watching him race without "loving" or "hating" The fact that there are relatively few people who are ambivalent about Earnhardt is a tribute to both his exceptional talents (the guy is not too argueably about the best talent in stock cars today), AND to the media hype which has followed him for the best part of the last decade and a half. 20 June, 1996 Bob Tanner bobtanner@aol.com ...
