Emerson Fittipaldi Draft 1997 Calendar The first draft of the 1997 calendar is out. The big races (Monaco, Britain, France, Germany and Italy) are unlikely to change. The interesting thing to notice is that the San Marino race has moved forward to the date where the European GP would normally be. Spain and Monaco have also moved forward leaving a gap before Canada (perhaps for a US GP?). The two other missing races are Hungary (between the German and Belgian races) and Portugal (between the Italian and Japanese races). The rumours suggest any from the US, South Africa, Austria, China, Indonesia and another Italian race (Ferrari's Mugello track). I doubt Portugal will be removed, but Hungary could well be replaced. March 02 Australia March 23 Brazil April 06 Argentina April 27 San Marino May 11 Monaco May 25 Spain June 15 Canada June 29 France July 13 Britain July 27 Germany August 24 Belgium September 07 Italy October 19 Japan Canada Preview The Canadian GP this weekend will see Jacques Villeneuve on top form, aiming to win his home GP. Michael Schumacher will be hoping to add to Ferrari's victory there last year and his victory for Benetton the year before. Damon Hill will be looking to end his recent run of bad form and establish his lead again. The circuit has been changed from last year Casino bend (turn 12) has been removed to make the 'Casino Straight' and the North end of the circuit has been resurfaced. The track has two hairpin bends which keep the average lap speed down to around 110 mph. This should make for a closer race Last year only nine cars were still running at the end. Blundell Back To F1 ? Mark Blundell has been linked to a 1997 Lola drive. He drove for Lola in Formula Ford and Formula 3000. Lola are fully committed to entering F1 next year and are currently on wind tunnel assessments of their car. Bridgestone Testing Bridgestone tested tyres on their own Ligier JS41 at Suzuka. They bought the car for test purposes and had Jos Verstappen driving for them. This has fuelled speculation that TWR Arrows will switch to Bridgestone tyres next year. Testing Roundup Testing last week gave confidence boosts to Johnny Herbert (3rd quickest at Barcelona), Martin Brundle and David Coulthard. Sauber were testing a modified air box and will have new engine parts for qualifying. Ferrari have continued their testing and the new high nose is reported to give the car more top end speed but affected stability. Ferrari also have modified rear diffuser and a new engine inlet and roll hoop are due soon. Ferrari V12 For Minardi ? Minardi may return to Ferrari engines and use the V12 next season. The engines will be rebuilt by the Oral group which will help remove any Ferrari involvement. The engines should give Minardi a significant performance increase (100 bhp) over their current Cosworth V8 engine. Renault To Quit ? Rumours of Renault's departure from F1 at the end of 1997 continue to grow. Renault is supposed to have accomplished all it set out to do in F1 and may switch to the Indy series. Frentzen Linked With Jordan The driver swapping rumours will start to come through now, first off the blocks this year is Heinz Harald Frentzen. Long rumoured to be going to Williams, he is now apparently being linked to Jordan where he will replace Martin Brundle (before the end of the season according to some). Failing that, he is also being linked with a drive at McLaren Mercedes, presumably in place of Mika Hakkinen as Coulthard has a two year contract. Take with a large pinch of salt :-) Honda Engines For Williams With Renault apparently quitting F1 after 1997 and the rumour of BMW returning being quashed. Williams are now being linked, (along with Benetton, Ligier, Arrows and Dome) to a Honda engine deal. While it looks almost certain that Honda will re-enter F1, it is unclear how many teams they will supply. News Back Issues The anonymous FTP archive for back issues of the news is now in place. Emerson Fittipaldi Emerson Fittipaldi made his GP debut in 1970 at Brands Hatch in the Lotus 49c, team mate to Jochen Rindt. He won his fourth race in the US to give Lotus a morale boost after the death of Rindt at the previous race in Italy. In 1971 he was thrust into leading the Lotus challenge and but for three retirements he might have fared better in the championship. As it was three podium finishes in France, Britain and Austria were enough for him to finish 6th in the title race. Emerson made history in 1972 when he became the youngest ever World Champion at the age of 25. He and the Lotus 72 were in brilliant form all season, he won five races and finished on the podium of all the other races he completed except Canada, where a broken nose cone saw him limp in 11th. Jackie Stewart won his last championship in 1973 in brilliant style. Emerson's season was set back by a string of retirements in France, Britain, Holland and Austria. He lost the lead and two second place finishes and a sixth place were not enough for him to catch Stewart. Emerson won three races that year and came second in the championship. A move to McLaren in 1974 saw Emerson back on top. Though he only won in Brazil, Belgium and Canada seven more finishes in the points were enough for him to take his second title in three years. Winning it in the last race as he and Regazzoni were joint top before then. Emerson finished fourth, Regazzoni finished eleventh. 1975 saw Emerson and the McLaren fighting for the title again, two wins and four second places were good performances, but not enough to outstrip Niki Lauda in the Ferrari. Emerson finished second in the title race. From 1976 Emerson's career took a nose dive, he quit McLaren and set up his own team. The Fittipaldi FD04 Ford was not the greatest car ever built and even Emerson could only manage three 6th place finishes. In 1977 he fared a little better, managing three fourth places and one fifth place. Twelfth in the championship was all he could manage. His teams best day came in 1978, when in front of his home crowd he managed to finish second in the Brazilian GP. The Fittipaldi F5A Ford never scaled those heights again, but he did manage some more points. By 1979 it was getting painful to watch. A truly great driver seemed determined to handicap himself as much as possible, the F5A was replaced by the F6 which raced once! before the F6A came along. One point, for sixth in Argentina meant that he finished 21st (last) in the championship. 1980 was his last year. The F7 and F8 didn't fix any of the problems that the earlier cars had, and the high point of the season was a remarkable 3rd place at Long Beach. His last four races saw him retire. At the end of 1980 he quit F1 and went on to drive in the Indy series. 14 wins, 6 pole positions, six fastest laps from 144 races. In fairness 80 of those races were for his own team which did not serve him well. Who knows how well he would have done had he stayed with McLaren or Lotus who were both successful while he had his own team. He squandered the prospects of a brilliant F1 career for the sake of running his own team.
