I remember a couple of incidents similar to GO> that one at Indy (Cogan slamming Foyt/Andretti into the GO> walls and taking out a good portion of the field comes to GO> mind) and I believe anyone who couldn't return to the GO> race in the car they qualified, couldn't return to the GO> race. CART rules differ from USAC rules in regard to backup cars. CART rules are basically the same as Formula One rules on this subject. If the race is stopped before one lap is completed (in fact, I believe it may be THREE laps in F1), then the start is aborted and a NEW start is called. In this case, the first start is void, and backup cars can be brought into the race. Of course, if the race goes some laps before a red flag, then backup cars won't be allowed. BT> select few. How about some of the punting Earnhardt's done within the last BT> year? Rusty last year ... Hamilton this season ... GO> Several good examples ... but, whether it's just luck or due to his GO> skill (treachery?), it can't recall a single incident started by DE GO> that resulted in a multi-car melee like the one in the 600. (And this GO> is coming from the fingers of a die-hard Rusty fan!) We can agree to disagree on this one. My thinking is: the fact that multiple cars were wrecked is merely side bar. I don't think NASCAR has any ruling that a penalty is predicated on the number of vehicles involved; it [allegedly] looks at reckless endangerment done with malice and/or forethought. Kyle wasn't _trying_ to wreck or "punt" anyone. He was racing to get his lap back. Plus, Musgrave actually _should have been_ behind him on the restart from what I've both read and heard. However, as with every racing incident, I wasn't in the car so I can't say what was going through Kyle's, Ted's, Rusty's or any of the other's minds so I can't speak with anything other an opinion. Plus, NASCAR never called me to get an "informed" judgment so my opinions are moot. BT> How many people has Geoff Bodine stacked into the wall this year? GO> I believe NASCAR blew it on a couple of occasions with Mr. Bodine. As GO> I recall most of his punts took out several cars. Once more, example of bias on NASCAR's part. BT> Kyle had a right to try and get his lap back. GO> True, but so did Ted and I'm of the opinion that Kyle used some pretty GO> poor judgement trying to get around him in the dogleg. It was VERY GO> early in the event to be pressing that hard directly in front of 40 GO> other cars! Remember the Winston a few years back when he did the same GO> thing to Davey on the last lap? In that case, he had a reason to go GO> for it all (after all, it was the last lap) ... but you'ld have thought GO> he learned something about passing at that point on the track? I saw cars go three-wide through the dogleg on several occasions during the race in question. Kyle's was an incident when cars got physically en- twined. Oh well, as I stated, we can agree to disagree. No harm in that. BT> What gives with this "If you wreck your car you get to go to a back up?" GO> No kidding. I remember a couple of incidents similar to that one at GO> Indy (Cogan slamming Foyt/Andretti into the walls and taking out a GO> portion of the field comes to mind) and I believe anyone who couldn't GO> return to the race in the car they qualified, couldn't return to the GO> race. You know, this brings up a point ... If you qualify a WC car but wreck it during "Happy Hour," you can start a backup car at the rear of the field. How about IF NASCAR had a multi-car wreck, similar to that at the "Attitude 500?" Would NASCAR let the teams go to back ups? If not, at what point does the qualifying car become a permanent fixture of the starting field? My guess would be the pre-race tech inspection, but that's merely a guess. BT> I did hear that things are not tranquil in the RYR stable and Ernie is BT> possibly going to drive for Felix. GO> Sounds a bit difficult to believe this one. Especially after their GO> showing at Dover. At first it was *REALLY* difficult to believe, however it's been reported in other places by now so it could well happen.. I can believe things are a bit tense but, who knows. I never thought NASCAR would get into the race car designing business, either. I always thought NASCAR was just a suc- cessful, money-grubbing sanctioning body. Boy! was I ever wrong on THAT count!? GO> This one seems a bit more believable. Jeremy hasn't blossomed like GO> Cale had hoped. Any speculation about who would fill the seat should GO> Jeremy be given his walking papers? I don't see this happening. Jeremy's coming along slow but he's in the top 20 fairly firmly. His driving hasn't show me a lot, but then, neither has his car, so ...? Que sera, sera. GO> BTW: What'd you think about the race at Dover? The race was a bit less than enthralling, IMHO. There have been too many races this year with the same 4-5 drivers in the top five finishing posi- tions, and with a handful of cars finishing on the lead lap. Hell, I thing, percentage-wise, F1 has more different winners this year than does Winston Cup! *THAT* should tell you how exciting I view the racing as being in NASCAR! GO> Jeffie sure had them covered. John Boy was interviewing Glen Jarrett on the "John Boy and Billie Big Show" this morning and he got in a zinger IRT Jeff I just gotta relate: JB was asking Glen about the Victory Lane interview with Jeffie at Dover when The Brooke-ster busted into the scene. Glen said some- thing about he had better sense than to stand between Jeffie and Brooke. JB went on to say (on radio, no less!?) that Kenny Schrader told him that he felt, with Brooke and the #24, Jeff had the two "best rides" in NASCAR! Glen gasped, then changed the subject very quickly. I thought Felix's turning the Coors #42 into a Earnhardt-clone was a stroke of promotional genius. I really roared when I saw it and read the state- ment in Spanish on the car's quarter panel. Good burn, Sr. Sabates! I, personally, would have printed "No he cargado con el muerto," but he basically said it all with his statement. GO> the middle of the race. I'm definitely ready for the broadcast to GO> return to ESPN. Kind of miss Benny. I predicted as soon as I heard that TNN was thrashing Mike Joy in favor of Eli AU that he would prove as irritating and, at least, as inept as Ken Squier. I have seen nothing to change my mind. I'm just glad the rumor about TNN axing Buddy Baker after he allegedly got a DUI leaving the track at Charlotte proved unfounded. Although, after spending an evening caged up in a booth with Ken Squier AND Dick Berggren, I think I might have been driven to drink, also! (This season I find myself actually preferring Squier over Eli! Agggggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!) What do you think about the new rumor involving Ford, Cougar and the Mark VIII? Ouch! It looks like it'll be really difficult to keep the "Rice Burners" out of major league racing IF it comes about! 5 June, 1996 Bob Tanner bobtanner@aol.com ...
