Dale is only 105 points out of second and ther are plenty of races left to change that. Especially if any more teams learn what made that RED WHITE and BLUE rocket move.It was an unbelieveable race if you look at it from the standpoint of how extremely well DJ's car handled and ran that track. Earnhart is the man but Just remember he had his old butt wooped by a youngin last year. Lets wait till the last race to decide the winner eh. --- WILDMAIL!/WC v4.12 * Origin: PINETOP BBS 1:3004/3 WC/WM/IM/PC/USR in AZ. Although some Kyle Petty fans are likely to disagree, I agree with the NASCAR officials perspective of the crash in the CC-600 and their choice to penalize the team for causing the disaster. GOOD) I-500) Great to see Buddy Lazier in victory lane. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. US-500) Really liked the implementation of the NASCAR type restarts. Seemed to keep the race exciting all the way to the finish. CC-600) From a Ford fan, it was great to see Dale Jarrett win it all. But, from a racing fan, it was also good to see the three brands so closely matched throughout the race (giving Pontiac a break since Johnny Benson was staying with the field until he literally lost his ass). All in all, it was a great day for a racing fan. BUT... I would much rather see only two races. 1600 miles = 12 hours is a long stretch for anyone to ure. Mario, who left F1 when DD>his reflexes slowing and his his age caught up with him. And Emmo, who eft DD>F1 for much the same reasons and soon must bid CART a quavery adieu. Seems DD>to me that CART has just 1 *former* F1 title holder. I don't think Mario left F/1 because of slowing reflexes. After his WC year with Lotus in 1978, the other teams quickly came to terms with ground effect cars and Lotus was never able to provide Mario with a competitive car afterwards. The Lotus 80 was a disaster and the trusty 79 was already outdated. Mario signed with Autodelta/Alfa-Romeo for the '81 season and those cars were a disaster as well. So after several seasons of awful rides in F/1, Mario turned stateside. Emmo quit McLaren after a couple seasons of there and one WC, to join his brother Wilson in building a Brazilian F/1 team with their own home-grown Brazilian-built cars. I don't think the brothers Fiitipaldi quite realized what they were getting into and although their initial backing from the Brazilian sugar cane industry seemed to be plenty at first, it didn't work out that way and the team struggled for several seasons before Emmo and Wilson threw in the towel. Like Mario, the Fittipaldis grew fustrated with F/1, the high costs and the difficulty in securing competitive rides. Emmo turned stateside and put together a CART deal, several years after Mario. But I think Mario and Emmo went to CART not because they thought they were over the hill for F/1, but because they found it much easier in CART to put together deals for competitive rides. .................Fred * DeLuxe2/386 1.25 #287 * Seeking the Great Panjamdrum! --- InterEcho 1.07 * Origin: World Data Network Washington, DC metro area (703) 758 1:109/236) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 142 AUTO RACING Ref: D5Y00024 Date: 05/23/96 From: FRED FINDLING Time: 04:42am \/To: KRISTOF VAN HEES (Read 7 times) Subj: F1 teams KV>And another question: Can someone give me background info about the Monaco KV>Grand Prix. Hill went out with a blown engine, Alesi who inherited the race after Hill's demise, went out with some mechanical failure such as a wheel upright or CV joint. Berger's car stopped for mechanical failure as well. Schumacher went out when he slipped and smote the armco just after the Loew's hairpin. The mixed wet/dry condition caught many out and I think there were only 6 cars left running at the end of the race. ........Fred * DeLuxe2/386 1.25 #287 * Won't work?? The year after, rules mandated the EF>car had at least a certain height between the bottom of the car and the EF>asphalt. The problem was addressed by manufacturers with an hydralic EF>suspension that would lower the car while on the track and rise it up EF>again before entering the pits. Not until they rules for the bottom of IMHO, ground effects were NOT the problem, but rather attemps by con- structors to get around "clearance" rule. The cars weren't that bad when they were still allowed rubbing strips as variations in ride height could be accomodated by the strips. When "clearance" rules came into play, con- structors no longer had the consistent venturi effect that the strips gave them, so in attemp to maintain a modicum of consistency with clearance, the builders went with extremely stiff suspension systems and tyres had very stiff sidewalls. As a result, the cars became rather skittish with their stiff suspensions and on bumpy circuits such as Dijon-Prenois the drivers complained that the pounding was enough to loosen your fillings. The 1983 rules essentially mandated that cars be flat-bottomed between the wheel arcs so any form of side-pod skirting was effectively banned. The rule wasn't announced until mid December '82 by which time most teams had their '83 cars laid down. Most teams settled on modifying their '82 cars to comply with new rules, but Brabham threw out their naiscent '83 car, the BT-51 and Gordon Murray went to work on an entirely new car which had no sidepods to speak of. His new car was the BT-52 which to a lot of people resembled a dragster. The BT-52 just had farings in front of rear wheels, on one side was the water radiator, the other side had the intercooler. Tyrrell did basically the same thing with their 012 although they didn't introduce it until the Austrian GP. Williams simply took their FW08B and shortened the pods to minumum length necessary to hold the radiators. It was a thrash job for Murray and Brabham to make an entirely new car on such short notice, but it paid off with a WC. Renault did produce a new car for the rules, the RE40 which appeared after Long Beach. It was quite effective as well, but reliability problems later in the season cost Prost and the Regie the championship. The following year, McLaren ran off with the championship not because of aerodynamic rules or lack of ground effects, but the new fuel restriction rules played into their hands. Refueling during the race was banned and cars had to go the distance on the 220 litres they carried. Turbo problems plagued most of the teams because they could no longer use fuel to keep turbo temparatures down. McLaren with their TAG/Porsche engines used the Bosch Motronic system that was very effective at dispensing fuel and they had custom-built turbos that weren't available to the others. McLaren won on reliability that year, their cars kept running while the others were side lined with melted down turbos. ...........Fred * DeLuxe2/386 1.25 #287 * Won't work??
