CART and IRL are both populated by F1 rejects. HL> The IRL is populated by F1 "rejects". CART is populated by F1 title HL> holders. When mansell raced in CART he could have stayed in F1. Hardly a HL> "reject". Maybe not but it seems when he tried to go back to F1 he was rejected. Let's talk about the other F1 champions in CART... Mario, who left F1 when his reflexes slowing and his his age caught up with him. And Emmo, who left F1 for much the same reasons and soon must bid CART a quavery adieu. Seems to me that CART has just 1 *former* F1 title holder. And what of Emmo's nephew, Christian "Crashmore" Fittapaldi, and Mikey "Hit 'em all" Andretti, and Stevie Johnson, and Teo Fabi... all F1 rejects. Now, who has the biggest batch of rejects? Cheever is/was at least as good as all four of the non-world champ F1 guys in CART. And Alboreto has more F1 wins than all four combined.... so who is the reject here? ENJOY!!! It is not a great philosophical school of thought. It is a group of adults going out and participating in a relatively dangerous activity and in so doing providing vicarious thrills for their spectators. Now, what's so difficult to figure out? People watch the IRL because it entertains them. If it doesn't entertain you then don't watch. But, also don't feel that it gives you carte blanche to bash those who enjoy the venue or participate in it. In other words... if you don't want to watch or participate, fine. But, don't bash those who feel differently than you. ENJOY!!! Something's Cooking in Uncle Dirty Dave's Kitchen ... "We're from the government. DD> It doesn't look like anything has gelled for Jack the Lad just yet. DD> Hemmelgarn has an extra car, as do Foyt and Menard but any of the DD> three would have to be qualified on speed as all three owners have used DD> their "earned" spots.... and don't ask me to explain the "earned spot" DD> thing. It will just set the CART horses to whinnying. I understand the "earned spot" concept, so no need to go on there Dave. As far as I can tell most of them are already used up, so if Jack could get into a quality ride his chances of making the show would be pretty good. DD> I'd like to see Jackie get the ride in Arie's T car. It has been over DD> 233 this week so we know it's a quality ride. And Jonathon the DD> cafeteria guy is an old dirt track and open wheel car DD> owner/sponsor/booster. Might happen now that Arie has boh ends of the DD> record and is solidly in the field. That would be OK by me, but one would have to think that the team would want to hang onto the T car just in case something foolish happened to their primary car. Arie has had enough bad luck already this month. JB> Isn't Arie running the Cosworth? DD> Yeah, he is running the XB motor and I saw his 239.26 lap... but it DD> was a one lap deal, he got a tow (NASCAR folks read "draft") and it was DD> practice and thus unofficial. Today I watched him snag the one and four DD> lap records when forced to re-qualify due to being 7 pounds underweight DD> at post qualification scrutineering. So, he starts from 21st spot DD> (outside 7th row) with the wobblers. Definitely not where he wants to start from, but if they hit on a good set up to start the day off it shouldn't take too long to get to the front. DD> But, the record will stand for some time since the new formula is for DD> 244" non-turbo engines... (4.0 litre) or half a litre (30.5") more than DD> an F1 mill.... Well, we saw what happened in F1 when they lost the turbos. Not that I expect the new Olds and Nissan power plants to do the same, but sooner or later somebody will figure out how to make them run. DD> I think that Menard will be glad to be rid of them Buick/Menard DD> plants. Geez, they sent Tony Stewart out Friday for a simulated DD> qualifying run and he picked up a minor tow, gained 400 RPM and smoked DD> the motor. Then Brayton went right out and did the same thing. Talk DD> about *touchy*. But when you are set up to run on the edge, 400 RPM is all that it takes to kill it. In Stewart's case I think it was a rookie mistake, Brayton OTOH should have known better. I never had too much faith in the Menard, I think it should have come much farther than it has after so many years of development. The thing that boggles me is why John Menard never made the change another engine program and campaigned an entire CART season. This IMO would have made him much more credible as a car owner. jb ___ Blue Wave/QWK v2.12 --- PCBoard (R) v15.21/M 10 * Origin: Fantasy Land BBS * Springfield, IL * (217)535-1005 (1:2430/2) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 142 AUTO RACING Ref: D5R00041 Date: 05/14/96 From: J BLACK Time: 09:59pm \/To: DAVE DRUM (Read 7 times) Subj: Re: IRL On 05-12-96 22:23 Dave Drum said something like this to J Black... CW> since the formation of the IRL there has been more than a little CW> speculation about how the unwashed masses would view the indy 500. I have to say that to me it hasn't been much of a change either. Sure the names are different, but other than that, the month of May at Indy really hasn't changed. The hands down car to beat, (Arie) suffers on pole day, only to come back and set the new track record the following day. (How's that for classic Indianapolis drama) New rookie driver sets the place on it's ear, (Tony Stewart) putting himself in the front row. Mark Dinsmore makes his return after suffering a horrifying crash years earlier, (should I go on?). It's been as exciting as ever IMO, and I can't wait to see what happens on race day. The IRL is giving both the non-fan as well as the die-hard fan a show worth the price of admission, (again MO). CW> i think tony george has played his ace and had it trumped myself. The more I look at it, the less I think that TG will flop in this venture. As for the man himself, I have to harbor some dislike for him since he DID alter the face of the 500 from the way I have always known it to be. Yet I am still optimistic about what the IRL in itself can do for Indycar racing as an entity of it's own. My prediction is that in another 3 years we will see an Indianapolis 500 where there is half of the field in the lead lap ready to shoot it out at the end. Something that hasn't happened there for quite a long time. jb ___ Blue Wave/QWK v2.12 --- PCBoard (R) v15.21/M 10 * Origin: Fantasy Land BBS * Springfield, IL * (217)535-1005 (1:2430/2) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 142 AUTO RACING Ref: D5R00044 Date: 05/14/96 From: J BLACK Time: 09:59pm \/To: ROB JACOBSEN (Read 7 times) Subj: Re: Nissan and John Morto On 05-11-96 21:23 Rob Jacobsen said something like this to Joe Norris...
