I had a very good strategy and thanks to the Williams team for working that well, and the pit stops were brilliant too. Q Can you tell us a bit more about the strategy because you didn't make your first stop until half way through the race. DH Yeah, we took a view on what the best route was and calculated it, I think, very well. Q Were you happy with the start, did you expect to come out of the first corner in the lead possibly? DH No, so long as I made a good start, I was happy with that. I made a good start, enough to stay ahead of Michael, but David made another fantastic start and he was in the lead and that made things a little bit interesting, but I'm just delighted. It was such a terrific race to do well in. Imola is a superb place to race because of the crowd, the fantastic turn out. It's great. Q Michael, a lucky finish we saw you crossing the line with your right front wheel locked up what happened, do you know? MS Yeah, a good question. I don't know what happened, probably something in the front wheel has broken, the bearing or the wheel itself. It happened after Acque Minerale, after the chicane and I just had three wheels left to finish with. I was quite worried because I was thinking I had to go another full lap. I was very lucky and happy that the race was finished when I crossed the line so it wasn't too bad. I just made it but it was quite interesting. Q Gerhard, your first time on the podium for Benetton. We last saw you in Hungary last year, you must be delighted to be back? GB Yeah, I'm quite happy about it. I have to say, I've been struggling this year. It's not going so well as I want but in the same time also, there wasn't much luck on my side this year, so both things together was just too much and so this race was quite good. I didn't have problems, I had a little bit problems with some traffic going into the pits and on the pit stop, but generally I was quite happy and no big problems. Q We saw that you stopped after crossing the finish line as well. Did you have a problem? GB No, I stopped because all the spectators jumped in and I know from the past here it is better to go away. Q Damon. Monaco, you expressed last year that you had a great desire to win at Monaco. What can we expect this year? DH I think Monaco's going to be another close battle but I make no secret of the fact I'd dearly love to win in Monaco. It's just one of those events which are the highlight on anyone's CV, so I'll be gunning for it. I can only say I am greatly saddened by your lack of factual information. It's one thing to broadcast what is actually happening at the moment and a totally different thing to broadcast the propaganda emanating from within the IRL without covering the other side of the coin. Your lack of presentation of these contradicting facts moves you several notches lower in my respect index. Let me bring you on-board with a few things you might consider presenting: MYTH: Road racing is a recent CART feature (hardly a "tradition). Tony George wants to continue the "tradition" of oval racing. FACT: Even if you count the 1979 birth of CART as being "recent", that was still long after road courses were first used as part of the Indy car championship. The very first road races which counted toward the season championship were run under AAA sanction. In the first season of the AAA Championship in 1909 there were 24 races. Of these 20 were classified as road races including 3 at Portland, 3 on the dirt oval at Indianapolis, and a season ending 480 mile "point-to-point" race from Los Angeles to Phoenix. In 1910 there were 4 races on dirt ovals (all at Atlanta), 6 road races, and 9 (!) races on the new brick oval at Indy. In 1911, when the 500 debuted, there were 19 road races, the Indy 500, and a race on the beach at Jacksonville, Florida. Road races remain an integral part of the championship to this day. The idea that oval races, and only oval races are the tradition behind todays championship is ludicrous. When Tony Hulman purchased Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1945, the 500 hadn't been run since 1941. He began a large restoration of the facility with three-time winner Wilber Shaw as the president and general manager. Hulman was worried that the gap in the event had killed it. Just the opposite was true. In 1946, a record crowd bolstered by many European visitors turned out and even the fledgling SCCA was there in force. With their victories in 1939 and 1940, Maserati has SIX cars in the field with three of them being FACTORY entries. Maserati: ROAD RACING. Tony George, in a statement at the Disney track, said his only reason for creating The IRL was to provide a series where less expensive cars could be driven by drivers who haven't had an opportunity to drive. Truly non sequitur. Mr. George's statement is a bald face lie and should be exposed for such. Tony George, in an attempt to control Indy style cars and racing has created a series which would force the CART members to conform to a completely different set of rules just to run in his 500 mile race. His insistence that only the teams which compete in the full IRL schedule would be able to occupy starting places within the first several rows flies in the face of his "tradition" pronouncements. The schedule consisting of only oval races is an attempt to change the face of Indy car racing and make it conform to his own wishes, wishes which he was not able to obtain from CART. I'm sure you know the history behind his leaving the CART board and the childish reasons for it. I won't elaborate or belabor the point here. It is an absolute crime that Mr. George has committed and should be exposed for such. To change the traditions behind a race such as the Indy 500 simply to suit ones own ego is abhorrent and needs to be openly stated as such. Please gentlemen, lets present a more even handed and truthful picture of whats behind the IRL series and not the propaganda being foisted off as fact by that same IRL. Sincerely, John C.
