CW> too bad alesi flubbed it again. i have always thought that alesi was CW> over-rated. well he is certainly proving my point this year. I don't know! I've seen him do wonderful things in the past and at other times he wouldn't do nothing. Most of us though it was because the cars (Tyrell, Ferrari,...) failed but maybe there is more to Alesi than just the car failing!? On the other hand, Berger has been showing problems also and that makes me thing the Benetton have a problem. This air flow over his head problem is fishy to say the least, a team of Benetton stature should already have solved this problem. Now, is there really a problem with the air flow? Berger has been doing reasonnably good compared to Alesi, which just seems to be putting himself in every possible problems. To a certain extent, he makes me think of Hill: when everything goes their way, they do well, but when they goof once, they'll continue to do mistakes CW> schumacher would likely be winning the title in that car. This is a speculation of course, but just the fact Benetton didn't do any major change to the car are a bad thing for Alesi. I sure do hope Jean would get some help to cope with this, otherwise I don't thing he will be driving a good car next year!! CW> as to other past business. when andretti was in F1 all the detractors CW> were saying how much better hakkinen would do. i have yet to see him CW> do as well let alone better. They said that most waiting to be F1 drivers would do better, and most, including Hakkinen did. Just remember that while we had Michael Andretti burning away in a McLaren, we had a Michael Schumacher waiting to be World Champion! CW> i continue to wait but hey it's too late considering how much more CW> experience he now has that michael did, and that doesn't even take CW> into account hakkinen's test miles. It doesn't take into account Mika's accident. He wasn't been the same since. Just like Karl Wendlinger never was after his. I do think that when you suffer this kind of accident, you have something like 80-90% of chance to loose that edge that makes you a F1 driver. Alexandro Nannini never could race a F1 after his, while he still race in Italy. Berger never really came back to what he was before his crash. But even now, I think Hakkinen is doing better than Andretti was with a WAY better car. Let's face it, for the last 3-4 years, McLaren has been out of contention... Eric,... ... They're getting away... This message trigered a memory for me. I was working turn 8 at Portland one year for the IMSA race weekend. The turn station is on the inside of the course, within easy walking distance of the "Pro" pits, so we often get visitors up there on the rise. The cars coming down the back straight are coming directly at you, then turn 100 yards or so before the station. Anyway, that year, the Nissan was on a long win streak, so there were some cameras out there to tape some footage for Nissan ads. John and a camera crew came out to the station during one of the GTP session while Geoff was driving the car. I was working yellow flag and watching a fairly large area of track for the first signs of trouble, especially since the cars coming at us were doing well over 160 mph and needed all the warning they could get. The young blond woman who was part of the camera crew looked at what we were doing and asked what the yellow flag was for. As she looked back to what she was doing, I looked over at John and rolled my eyes. It was all he could do to keep a straight face. She looked back up to see if she was going to get an explanation, so I turned to John and said "Your supposed to know what they all mean. Why don't you explain it to her since I've got a track to cover." Once he recovered his composure, he gave a simple explanation that a non-racer could understand. It was rather obvious to all of us out there that they had sent us non-racer types on that camera crew. Folks that needed an attendent before being allowed anywhere near a hot track surface. They seemed to not have a clue about how dangerous a place they were working. Don't get me started about some of the camera toting types out there. I recognize the ones that can take care of themselves. I also recognize those that should be behind the fence, except that someone got them a pass for the hot area of the track. Take care.
