AvdW> I only hope that there WILL be an OS/2 version of JAR... because AvdW> what i've seen of the beta looks very promising... it's kinda AvdW> like ARJ (lots of options) with tighter compression. Well I always like to have a quick look at new programs, but its better to have a non beta to look at:-) I changed to Arj when I got a good look at it, but I have just about all the common types here just in case someone packs a file in an unusual format:-) Funny but I cant remember the last time I had to pack a file for any reason tho.. Archives are to tape, with built in compression:-) Cheers, Cliff Written offline at 06:52 Hrs --- Terminate 4.10a43/Pro*at _Tester_ _UK_ * Origin: Cliff's Terminate 4.0/Pro Point off Crystal Tower (2:254/220.105) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 141 ARJ Ref: E2N00004 Date: 02/18/97 From: BOB SEABORN Time: 10:14am \/To: KEN WHITON (Read 1 times) Subj: ARJ/2 > *-* On {16 Feb 97 13:20:37}, Jesse Dooling wrote to Hans Mangold *-* > *-* Concerning: ARJ/2 *-* > >JD> The DOS version of ARJ works in an OS/2 DOS box anyways.. > > ... as long as you're using it on a FAT partition, and the files > you're handling are named in the DOS 8.3 format. A native OS/2 version > could also be expected to handle HPFS, EAs, and long filenames. In a DOS box under OS/2w4, an HPFS drive appears as a 'normal FAT' drive, there's no real distinction as far as DOS and it's applications are concerned (although an HPFS drive is much faster than a FAT drive). Now EA's are only represented by a hidden file or two, with an illegal (as far as DOS is concerned) filename. Long filenames, whether for directories or files are totally invisible to DOS, although DOS will report the fact that any drivespace taken up by them is not available. .....Bob --- GEcho/32 & IM 2.50 * Origin: Canadian RegSite for AllFix & Gecho (1:140/12.1) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 141 ARJ Ref: E2N00005 Date: 02/16/97 From: JACKSON HARDING Time: 11:45am \/To: HANS MANGOLD (Read 1 times) Subj: ARJ/2 Hello Hans! Actually IBM have not made anything at all clear. IBM's marketing division couldn't sell their way out of a wet brown paper bag, and nothing appears set in cement at this time. HM> market is embracing NT. Where does that leave OS/2??? 1996 was "The HM> Year of the Browser". Was there even one single browser for OS/2 HM> that hit the retail shelf in 1996? Nope. What does that tell you? HM> ATM machines don't need browsers. Then the copy of NetScape 2.02 for OS/2 that I have, dated 1996, is a figment of my imagination? NetScape/2 was released with great fanfare by IBM and NetScape, at least in the OS/2 world. HM> Have you written to IBM lately and asked them why "Merlin" sales are as HM> dead as a doornail? And why even the OS/2 magazine folded? It's simple. There seems to be a corporate ethos at Big Blue that they don't have to advertise, that the world will still beat a path to their door and accept that the IBM route is the path to true enlightenment. Afraid it just aint so anymore. If OS/2 Merlin (inluding voice type/navigation) recieved he same three ring circus treatment that Win95 did then sales would be through the roof, for sure the ability to *talk* to your computer, to have it do what you want by voice alone is something that people have wanted for years. It's here, now, and comes bundled with Merlin. That alone should have it walking out the door faster than the disks can be produced. Instead IBM's marketing is woeful and the trail of FUD that is spread about OS/2 continues unchecked. HM> Patrick, instead of asking others to re-evaluate their priorities, I think HM> you should re-evaluate yours. Can you say: Windows 95 and / or NT ? I can, but I usually barf when I do :-) Seriously, it saddens me to see what is a superior operating system languish for want of decent marketing. It's the VHS v beta thing all over again.
