--------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 141 ARJ Ref: DBD00000 Date: 06/28/96 From: JOE NEGRON Time: 11:22pm \/To: JASON WONG (Read 2 times) Subj: arj backups ** Quoting Jason Wong to All: JW> Could anyone tell me the command to make arj backup some programs on > to disk with spanning and compression Sure: C:\>arj a -+ -a1 -jm1 -jt1 -r -vva -wE:\ A:\archive.a01 C:\*.* Follows is an explanation of each command/option: a - tells ARJ to add files to an archive. -+ - tells ARJ to refrain from using the ARJ_SW environment variable for switches. This environment variable can either be a set of switches, or it can point to a filename which contains different switches for each ARJ command. If you don't have this environment variable then you don't need the "-+" switch. a1 - tells ARJ to include any files and directories (including Hidden and System). "-a" alone will backup files with the Hidden and System attribute, but not empty directories. jm1 - sets faster maximum compression. "-jm1" compresses almost as well as "-jm" (the maximum compression method), but does so faster, sometimes much faster. jt1 - tells ARJ to compare each file in the archive to the original on disk. This will slow down the backup, but it's about the safest you can get when backing up to floppies. r - tells ARJ to recurse subdirectories when looking for files. vva - this is a compound switch - each option is explained below: v - enables multiple volume mode v - (the second "v") makes ARJ beep between volumes a - tells ARJ to auto-detect space available on the floppy. w - assigns the work directory - this should point to a RAM disk if you have one, but even if not, have it point to somewhere on your hard disk - this will speed up the backup. ARJ is very configurable and there are a lot more options that you can use to modify ARJ's behavior under various circumstances. If you need more help, just ask. --From Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY, Fri, 06-28-96-- --Internet: joe.negron@consultant.com-- ... Robert Jung also asked for comments WS> with particular emphasis on extracting files with long WS> filenames while doing so at DOS instead of in Windows. Thank you for your comments. For the ALPHA release, ARJ has three options. One is the dual-name archive. DOS ARJ will extract the shortnames. Win95 ARJ will extract the longnames. The second option uses W95LNAME.nnn where nnn is the archive sequence number. One can later dump the real names to an ASCII text file and do some manual renaming. The third option is to try to use the long names with DOS. Some truncating may occur. WS> On another matter: As long as you are headed for XMS memory WS>swapping, can I get you to consider swap-to-disk where no XMS is WS>available? I'm thinking in terms of those XTs still floating around in WS>this world... :-) Yes, the new file list handling with use conventional memory, XMS memory, or DISK space. The only difference in behavior is one of speed. With a good disk cache, there is not much difference between XMS usage and DISK usage. Duplicate filename checking is fully enabled for all modes. New features of ARJ 2.55 include: 1) Support of Windows 95 long filenames under Win95 DOS box. 2) Capability to build DUAL-NAME archives and SFX archives that will extract properly both to Windows 95 and to DOS. 3) ARJ-PROTECT data damage protection option that allows repair of damaged "protected" ARJ files. 4) Display support of ANSI escape display sequences in ARJ comments and files without ANSI.SYS. 5) Support for multiple volume updating. 6) Support for multiple volume ARJ-SECURITY. 7) Improved encryption via the Russian GOST algorithm. 8) Support for ARJing several backups (CHAPTERS) to a SINGLE archive and restoring any individual backup. The advantage is major disk space savings when many files have not changed from backup to backup. This release comes in two files named ARJ255.EXE and ARJ255X.EXE. The second file ARJ255X.EXE is intended for export use outside of the USA. Hi, Sorry about the problem. You have uncovered a bug in the long filename support API. I have fixed it and will release a new version in a week or so. In the meantime, the -j option for the SFX and SFXV modules will disable this faulty test api and the -hf option for ARJ.EXE will do the same. Thank you for reporting this issue to me.
