(AP) LAUNCHES ARIANE--After months of delays, the second launch of the Ariane 5 rocket was successful on October 30. The new launcher carried into orbit three payloads: dummy satellites MAQSATs B and H, and a smaller scientific satellite called Teamsat. (AP and Reuters) The amateur radio Amsat Phase 3D satellite was to have flown on this flight. However, it now emerges that in August the European Space Agency cancelled its contract with Amsat, after ESA ordered modifications in Phase 3D (so it could handle increased vibration) that took longer to complete than ESA wanted to wait. (AMSAT) ASTRA--The October 25 launch of the Astra 1G satellite on a Russian Proton rocket has been postponed until November 21. The manufacturer, Hughes, reportedly discovered faults in the satellite's communications says, and in one of its fuel tanks. (airlock Module-D) during the 4th EVA it lasted a very long time before the cosmonauts could put off their spacesuits. A failure made it impossible to pressurize the airlock. The cosmonauts opened the hatc h again to see whether something was wrong with the gasket of the outer ring of the hatch. This did not help and they d ecided to use the nearest compartment (the P.N.O., instrument- and scientific compartment) as airlock. Solovyov did thi s before: in 1990 due to a damage of the hatch. The Russians decided not to put back the 5th EVA, but to use the P.N.O. as airlock. The crew had to work hard during the days between the EVA's: they had to study and train for the new scenario, to repair the telemetry unit of Solovyo v's spacesuit , to install a valve inside the Base Block for the installation of a second Vozdukh CO2 scrubber and to p repare themselves for the EVA. During the depress of the P.N.O. and the Sh.S.O. the crew tried to discover the cause of the pressure failure. The EVA -hatch swung open on 6.11.97 at 00.12.39UTC and closed behind the cosmonauts at 06.24.46UTC. These moments could be mon itored due to the extensive use of the geostationairy Altair-2 during this EVA. Wolf stayed inside and he took care for the camera work and the communications. He gave the commands to establish a vi deo-link via Altair-2 and he pushed the buttons of the electric remote control during the deployment of the new instal led solar panel. The first activity of Solovyov and Vingradov was to transfer the new solar panel from the SO (docking compartment Krist all) to the Kvant-1. They installed the solar panel over there and connected the cables. They tried to unfold the panel , but part of the clamps between the sectors of it did not react on the commands given by Wolf. So Solovyov and Vinogr adov had to do some push and pull work and this helped. So the new solar battery can be inserted into the structure of the S.E.P. -the Power Supply System- of the station. After removing the cap from the outlet for the Vozdukh valve, which they had installed during the 4th EVA, they returne d to the airlock. Back in the airlock Vinogradov inspected the rubber gasket on the outer ring of the hatch and he disc overed some minor iniquities. While closing the hatch he stated that the mechanism did not react smoothly. The indicator 'hatch closed' was positive. The crew closed the hatch between the Sh.S.O. and the P.N.O. and used the l ast compartment as airlock. The pressure in the Sh.S.O. was 209 mm mercury. In 2 days the crew will check whether thi s pressure decreased or not. After the EVA the pressure in the rest of the complex was 637 mm mercury. Communications: Altair-2 was in use during all windows. During direct VHF passes the frequency 143.618 mc was used sim ultanuously with strong interference by cross-modulation by an airtraffic control station. I thought you may be interested to know that the Lincoln And District Amateur Radio Society or LADARS are holding a Electronics and Computer "Junk" sale. The date for your diary is THURSDAY 27th of NOVEMBER at 8 PM. The venue is the Lincoln Post Office Club, Dunkirk Road Off Burton Road in the Uphill Part of LINCOLN. The start time is 8pm and admission is only 50P. This year I have been able to get a local PC company to attend this event, this being CYMA Computers. They can supply everything from spare parts for upgrading your current PC, or even totally new system at a reasonable price. I have recently had my Motherboard upgraded and a faster CPU fitted. These were purchased from CYMA. Also a software company from Near Brigg, and a local printer & inkjet refill supplier said that they would be interested in attending our sale. We shall also be holding a raffle and various prizes will be on offer to the winners. The star prize will be a FREE meal for TWO people at The Sherwood Pines Visitors centre, this is located in Sherwood forest off the B6030 between Ollerton & Clipstone in Nottinghamshire. This prize was kindly donated to the radio club by one of the members, Roy who runs the visitors centre. So if your not busy on the 27th of November and are interested in Computers or Radio. Then why not come along and either just Browse or maybe have a table and clear out any unwanted electronic or computer bits you no longer need. The price of hiring a table is only one pound per table. This is mainly as they are only small bar tables which are approx 4ft x 1.5 ft. Also this low price hopefully helps to attract potential sellers to the event. If you need any more information regarding this event such as directions on how to reach the clubs location then please contact me the LADARS ecretary Paul Ward via the "MOST WANTED" phone BBS or failing that phone me on 01522 - 537751. I'll look forward to hearing from you and hopefully seing you there on the 27th. So bye for now and many thanks from Paul in Lincoln. P.S. Any happenings ? I have been to the boot sales on the West end and have picked up radio/shortwave equipment at very good prices. For others out there, I have had no problems with customs in importing items into the U.S. Just remember to keep your receipts. $400.00 is the limit on "tax free" items purchased. Otherwise a 10% import duty is charged. For a VAT refund just show the items to a customs agent in the UK proving the items will be exported out of the country. He/she signs a form and you either receive a check in the mail or your credit card reflects a credit. * JABBER v1.1 * Women DO come with instructions... just ask one! --- Maximus 2.02 * Origin: Larry's (Amiga) Hot Tub (1:285/15) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 140 SHORT WAVE Ref: EFJ00001 Date: 11/13/97 From: PAUL WARD Time: 01:16am \/To: ALL (Read 0 times) Subj: "Supermarket" Packet radio ? Hi There and thanks for reading this message. I wonder if any of your scanner or packet radio buffs can help me out ? I was in my local supermarket ( Safeway ) the other week and whilst loading my trolly, I noticed a chap with a hand held tranceiver clipped to his belt - ( It looked like a VHF unit although I couldnt get near enough to read the frequency display ! ) The radio was making a familier buzzing sound every couple of seconds, this sounded just like Packet radio. The radio was attached to a barcode scanner which he was using this on the goods on the shelves, so i suppose he was stock taking. I just wondered if anyone knew which part of the radio spectrum was being used for this job. Also would it be standard AX25 packet like Radio Hams use ? Any information on this subject would be welcome. Because it would be interesting to see if I could decode any of the data. I suppose it would be fun to keep up to date with the latest prices before I going to the shops :-) Many thanks & 73 from Paul in Lincoln. --- Blue Wave/386 v2.30 * Origin: Most Wanted BBS +44 (0)1522 887627 & 887628 * (2:2503/509) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 140 SHORT WAVE Ref: EFM00000 Date: 11/16/97 From: CHRIS ANDERSON Time: 09:03pm \/To: LEROY DONNELLY (Read 0 times) Subj: RADIO & COMPUTER "JUNK" > is charged. Without one of those silly VAT forms, which only a small percentage of shops provide, I am always unable to get any cooperation out of them at all, other receipts notwithstanding. Such is life at Heathrow. The reason for this is if you check such items in your luggage (there's this limit to carry-on, you see), there's no way to prove you've even got the items in question, since they'll only do this transaction on the OTHER side of the emigration service desk (aka passport control), long after you've kissed your luggage goodbye. So, if you want your 17% back, figure on carrying whatever it is all the way back by hand. Great system. Of course, they really don't WANT you to get that money back... --- FLAME v1.1 * Origin: The Dinosaur Board [Niwot, CO] (1:104/114)
