You should be able to hear that as long as you have line-of-sight (about a 50 foot tower should do it) and a receiver with .5 microvolt sensitivity (with no intermod products from high powered broadcast transmitters in the area. You will probably need a 10dB yagi antenna, a FET preamp (10 dB gain minimum) and a narrow bandpass preselector. The reason for all of the additional gain is that the inputs of most consumer FM receivers begin to "quiet" in the 100 microvolt area. The preselector can be a piece of copper pipe in a box that is capacitively tuned to the exact frequency. I have done something like this: ========= <- pipe bonded to box | | | | | ---]-| | |-[--- <- 75 ohm input and output | | | | | | | | | <- copper pipe inside box | | | | | | | | | | | | | =/= | <- variable capacitor to ground from pipe ========= Make the box out of anything that you can solder to - like sheet metal. The input and outputs are loops that come from the connectors to ground - they should be about an inch or two long (experiment!) and be spaced closely to the pipe. The end of the coupling loops that aren't connected to the center of the connector are tied to the box near the base of the pipe. The pipe should be about 22 inches and the capacitor should probably work out in the 50 to 100 pF range if my guestimates are near correct. (Construction methods will change a number of the variables - so I can't do much more than guess.) This should give a very narrow bandpass filter with not too much loss. It's also cheap as dirt. --- COUNTERPoint 2.3 * Origin: MacRefuge * 612-426-6687 * (1:282/24@fidonet) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 140 SHORT WAVE Ref: DFN00001 Date: 11/18/96 From: DOUG ESPY Time: 01:18am \/To: JIM DVOROVY (Read 5 times) Subj: SHORTWAVE ANTENNAS -=> Quoting Jim Dvorovy to Doug Espy <=- JD> On 11-14-96 Doug Espy wrote to Jim Dvorovy... I seriously doubt you will hear a 3 watt transmitter 7 miles away to feed your tranmitter. You need to go satillite with the feed for a reliable full quieting and stable audio source and tune to Galaxy 7, Transponder 14 and subcarrier is 7.75 + or - your broadcast will start at 7pm EST. Don't worry about that, Now is a good time to start learning and I have'nt stopped learning myself. Technology is changing and I have to change with it Write my notes down and go to a satillite dealer and buy a used dish with a very high DB gain LNB for the feedpoint of the dish. You would not need any azmuth or rotation due to the one satillite mention you need to hear. you will also need a subcarrier downcoverter from the dealer. And then you will have the dependable CLEAR source to re-transmitt. If you retransmitt the noises from SW YOU WILL BE TUNED OUT. and you will not hear a 3 Watt FM carrier 7-8 miles off without spending $2000.00 for a high sensitivity GASFET triple conversion FM receiver with a tower and a Yagi to hear a 3 watt source. GO SATILITE! I have seen the old satilite receivers go for as cheap as $100.00 used due to people going to the new digital systems and in some cases you can get them for nothing if you take them dowm. You would then only need to purchase the subcarrier downcoverter fron Norm or your local dealer. --- * Origin: The GOOD News BBS, Chattanooga TN 615-698-0407 (1:362/112) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 140 SHORT WAVE Ref: DFN00002 Date: 11/18/96 From: SCOTT CHRISTENSEN Time: 05:06am \/To: DAN DOUGLAS (Read 5 times) Subj: Re: **** HELP **** Dan Douglas writes in a message to Kevin Redding DD> COuld I easily get a licsence and basicaly have my own Radio DD> Station and get advertising and make a profit????
