STEPHENS (Read 4 times) Subj: Re: This Week's Loggings, Par Dear J.D. : Thank you very much for the support. I don't get to DX much on any day, be it Sunday to Saturday. Between a new job with hard work, my daughter's Young Marines and my CAP and Coast Guard, and chores, I'm lucky to get 15 minutes. However, you'll hear what I heard, be it commonplace or no. Tonight is the first game of the World Series (for you non-North Americans, the North American professional baseball championship.) I plan to see how many CBS stations carry the Series as well as WSB in Atlanta and WABC in New York City. The trick is making do with what you have. I have a DX-160, a Halicrafters tube ham-band receiver, a Hammarlund tube receiver (being renovated), a Sony ICF-2001, and a little patience. I get SSB, and I am hoping to rig an older computer to serve as a FAX/RTTY decoder, but it will take time I rarely have and bucks. So I listen to what I like, and try to honor the Tenth Commandment and not covet all the fancy gear and loggings. --- Opus-CBCS 1.73a * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Md - 301-622-2247 (1:109/417.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 140 SHORT WAVE Ref: DES00001 Date: 10/20/96 From: GREGORY BAKER Time: 04:50pm \/To: CHUCK MANDUS (Read 4 times) Subj: Re: SPECTRUM TABLE -HUMOR > Anti-Christ > comes along when we pick up a heavy metal, Esperanto > station on > 666 kHz with a 13 kW signal. On 19 Oct 96 you wrote to me: AP> Tuning around on the 13m Band today, I found the BBC Worldservice at 5.30 AP> UTC on 21660 KHz. I think this would be the relay on the Ascension-islands. I can also hear them on 21470 kHz, coming from Cyprus in the afternoon. On October the 12th I observed a partial eclipse of the sun here in Central Europe using a refractor telescope. I projected the sun on a screen and I didn't discover one sunspot at this time (I had already observed the sun before the penumbra of the moon touched our area ;-) ). I think the sun activity is still low at the moment and we have to wait one or two years for the longed-for flares. Today I'll send another netmail to you. The only one I received from you was dated October the 18th. I think it may be possible to swap "engines" in the PRO-2004 to bring it up to PRO-2006 caliber; that is, I think the PRO-2006 CPU can be made to work in the slower PRO-2004. If so, this will yield a trouble-free 30-ch/sec scan and search speed. For some early PRO-2004's, it will also yield the full expanded cellular bands: 868.950-894.000 MHz and 823.950-849.000 MHz with default 30kHz acing. (Early PRO-2004's with the GRE-0327 CPU were firmware'd for 870-890 MHz and 825-845 MHz with 30 kHz spacing, and 12.5 kHz for adjacent bands. Later PRO-2004's with the GRE-0327A CPU had the modern 30 kHz defaults.) If you are technically competent and would enjoy a little guided Research and Development, and will foot your own costs, estimated to be $60-$100, then contact me by e-mail for more details. No, I am not selling anything - you will be required to obtained parts and materials on your own, according to my specifications and directions. I will provide instructional and guidance materials. To be qualified for this R&D project, you should possess the following minimum qualifications: 1. Own a PRO-2004 in good operating condition 2. Own or be willing to acquire a service manual for the PRO-2004. 3. Be willing to modify its Logic/CPU board, PC-3 4. Have some experience at PCB work, including IC installation and removal. 5. Have some experience with CMOS and SMT devices 6. Purchase a PRO-2006 CPU from Tandy National Parts (800) 442-2425. Est cost: $50-$60 7. Purchase a pair of 64-pin DIP sockets with 0.07" pin spacing. Est cost: $15 8. Own or acquire basic handtools, and basic desoldering equipment. 9. Be willing to respect and abide by copyrights and Non-Disclosure Agreements without fail. 10. Be willing and capable of providing regular and detailed reports of your work and results by Internet e-mail. 11. Have an Internet e-mail account available for daily and regular use, both to send and receive e-mail. The only thing that I have that will cut through all the cross-modulation is the little GE Superadio II.
