NK> he didn't shave off 12 parsecs. he did the run in UNDER 12 parsecs. NK> correct me if i'm wrong. Oh, yes, I forgot something, you're right. What I meant to say was something like, the usual distance of the run is 12 parsecs or more depending on how close you want to get to those Black Holes. Han though was crazy enough to fly closer to those Black Holes, or fly through a shorter but more dangerous route through the cluster of Black Holes to fly less than 12 parsec before completeing the "run." This is what I think anyway. --- EzyBlueWave V1.48g0 01fa0167 * Origin: Milky Way, Langley, BC [604] 532-4367 (1:153/307) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 138 STAR WARS Ref: F2300001 Date: 02/02/98 From: STEVE BOLEN Time: 06:53pm \/To: OLIVER J. HANAU (Read 0 times) Subj: 12 PARSECS SB> That Han beat the record by 12 parsecs, means that he was the only SB> smuggler brave (crazy?) enough to get close enough to the black holes, SB> to shave off 12 parsec from the distance of the run. OJH> Uhm, three things: OJH> (i) Who said Han beat the record BY 12 parsecs? He said, 'did the OJH> Kessel Run in LESS THAN 12 parsecs.' You are right, about this. I responded to someone else about the same thing, so read that. I didn't quite write what I was thinking up there, but I think I straightened it out in my other message. OJH> (ii) If -- as some writers have tried to "explain" -- Han shortened OJH> the distance of the Kessel Run, why would he say that in order to OJH> prove he has a FAST ship? Oh, this is simple physics. Do you know anything about escape velocities? The more mass a body has, the greater the gravitaional pull that the body has. The greater the gravitational pull, the greater the velocity required to "escape" from that body's gravitational pull. A Black Hole is THE most dense (mass per size) body that we currently know of, therefore it has the greatest gravitational pull of all the possible astral bodies that could be encountered in space, again, that we know of. Therefore, in order to escape the gravitaional pull of a Black Hole, there is quite a substantial amount of velocity needed. The closer you get to the Hole, the greater the pull, and the more velocity needed to escape being sucked into oblivion. Therefore, if Han's ship could fly close enough to the Black Holes to fly a shorter distance than 12 parsecs (evidently the shortest route any other smuggler on the spice run dares to take), than he would need a much greater escape velocity than other ships. So as you can see Being able to fly the run in UNDER 12 PARSECS IS a boast on the speed of the Falcon. (I hope I explained this so you can understand, I not that great at explanations.):) OJH> (iii) It was obviously the point of that part of the dialogue to show OJH> that Han thought Ben did't know anything about starships and the OJH> like. The direction immediately after Han's sentence leaves no OJH> room for doubt that Lucas knew when he wrote it that Han was OJH> talking nonsense at that point. I'll have to disagree with you here. There is no evidence in the dialogue that Han was diliberatly misinforming Ben. It was a simple error in the script which luckily, was rectified by the creation of the Black Hole Cluster surrounding Kessel. I beleive that the physics explains it better than some unproven speculation about misinformation. I think that the physics makes more sense. ...
