"Re: Star Trek rules.", declared David Nelson from the Vogon ship: DN>And another thing, did Star Wars get nominated for any Academy DN>Awards? No. Star Trek Iv got nominated for best Special Effects DN>1991, and First Contact for best makeup in '96. Star Wars was nominated for Best Picture in 1977 (it lost to Woody Allen's _Annie Hall_). I don't have the complete list of what it was nominated for, but I DO have the complete list of what it WON: Art Direction/Set Direction: John Barry, Norman Reynolds, Leslie Dilley, Roger Christian, _Star Wars_, 1977 Film Editing: Paul Hirsch, Marcia Lucas, Richard Chew, _Star Wars_, 1977 Visual Effects: John Stears, John Dykstra, Richard Edlund, Grant McCune, Robert Blalack, _Star Wars_, 1977 Special Achievment: Benjamin Burtt, Jr., for sound effects, _Star Wars_, 1977 Brian Johnson, Richard Edlund, Dennis Muren, Bruce Nicholson, for visual effects, _The Empire Strikes Back_, 1980 Sound: Dan McDougall, Ray West, Bob Minkler, Derek Ball, _Star Wars_, 1977 Bill Varney, Steve Maslow, Gregg Landaker, Peter Sutton, _The Empire Strikes Back_, 1980 Best Original Score: John Williams, _Star Wars_, 1977 I just realised that this list is from a very old book, before Return of the Jedi came out. It might have won some, too. Anybody have a more up- to-date list? And a list of the nominations? DN>Wise up and check some real Sci-fi. I have the same advice for you. Nobody here claims Star Wars is real sci- fi. Star Wars is a space opera. It's science *fantasy*. The writers made no attempt to follow real-world science. They just used scientific marvels instead of "magic" to create a fairy tale for the modern scientific age. We all know that, and we're fine with it. Star Trek does indeed attempt to be real sci-fi. (I won't muddy the waters with the distinction between SF and sci-fi.) In my opinion, its not very GOOD sci-fi. If you think Star Trek is the pinnacle of science fiction, you should try some new stuff. You should wise up and check out some real sci-fi. I recommend the work of Robert Heinlein, Lois McMaster Bujold, and Orson Scott Card for starters. If you just want SF *movies*, instead of books, Card's _Enders Game_ and Heinlein's _Starship Troopers_ are being made into films. I don't know how close they are to coming out, though. They are all QUAD, you know.. That means Four-in-one type of gun. True, the enterprise has 260 torpedoes; how many can it fire at once? And as for the federation using lasers for target practice, my &$$, They use them when ever the can.. I've only seen the enterprise use torpedoes when they know they've lost. I can see it now..... Worf: "Captain, a small, one man fighter, coming our way..." Picard: "I need info you savage warrior-race beast" Worf: "it has shields that match ours, four laser cannons, and torpedo's. You balded head pertuderance... wait, Sensors are picking up 5 more.. Now, there is a large ship, does not comform to any know ship type. CAPTIAN, it's 5 times bigger than the enterprise!!! and that many times more powerful.. Sir, I suggest surrender, the 6 ship's alone could work us over.. It's is not a good day to die.. It would be a slaughter." "Chh-- Buzzz-- Greatings primative space-goes. This is Commander Wedge Antillies, The Rogue Squadron, And the Calamari Flagship `Freedom'" Hmmm.. Sorry to say man.. One thing I will say, SW has been at it for 20 years, and still going strong, and we're still in the original.. SW hasen't had to create 4 different shows to TRY and get people to watch.
