Average sunspot numbers were up by 17 points, and average solar flux was also higher, but by less than five points. Average solar flux for the previous 90 days rose from 96 to 97, and the daily flux was above the average for that day on five out of seven days. This indicates a moderate general upward trend in solar flux values. Solar flux peaked at 108.3 on Sunday, but is now headed down to the low nineties. For January 30 through February 1 flux values are projected at 94, 93 and 91. A Coronal Mass Ejection earlier on January 25 should cause unsettled conditions on the last two days of January, but the A index is only expected to rise to around 20. This is enough though to cause problems over polar radio paths and in higher latitudes. Solar flux is expected to bottom out around 90 between February 5-9, then rise up near 100 again later in the month. Sunspot Numbers for January 22 through 28 were 37, 57, 88, 104, 99, 98 and 89 with a mean of 81.7. 10.7 cm flux was 93, 96.9, 97.5, 108.3, 100, 100.8 and 96.6, with a mean of 99, and estimated planetary A indices were 4, 3, 4, 9, 3, 6, and 2, with a mean of 4.4. The January, 1998 issue of Scientific American has an interesting article on the Ulysses mission, which is returning new data on high latitude solar magnetic fields. NASA has a web site for this mission at http://ulysses.jpl.nasa.gov/. Another NASA project of interest to solar observers is the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE), launched last summer. The February, 1998 issue of Monitoring Times magazine has an informative article on solar weather and the ACE mission. GB2RS NEWS BROADCAST Good morning / evening. It's Sunday the 1st of February [1998] and here is the GB2RS news broadcast, prepared by the RSGB and intended for all radio amateurs and short-wave listeners. The following press release was issued by the RSGB on Wednesday the 28th of January: 'The Radio Society of Great Britain announces today that it has concluded the purchase of the title of "Ham Radio Today" from Nexus Special Interest Publications as from the March 1998 edition. Peter Kirby, RSGB's General Manager, commented "The presence on the bookstalls of a more general interest publication, covering radio communication and related topics, allows us to reach a wider section of radio and electronics enthusiasts and makes good use of the Society's publishing skills and experience. Ham Radio Today has carved a special niche in the radio interest sector, and the RSGB has agreed the continuing involvement of Chris Lorek as technical adviser. The Magazine will be managed by a separate editorial staff, under the leadership of Steve Telenius-Lowe, G4JVG, who will work independently of the editorial staff of the Society's other publication, RadCom, the editor of which will be Steve White, G3ZVW.' The Society is also elevating its commitment to book production in the radio and related sectors. To this effect, Mike Dennison, previously the Managing Editor of RadCom, will take overall responsibility for the production of both magazines and also for the Society's book production strategy. Roger Patey for Nexus commented that after a strategic review it had been decided Ham Radio Today did not fit comfortably with other titles in the portfolio. Nexus had therefore decided to dispose of the publication and to concentrate on its core activities. The GB2RS broadcast for the 18th of January reported that in this year's New Year Honours List an MBE was awarded to RSGB member Roy Gerrard, G3LAZ. Since then, news has reached us that another RSGB member, Frank Howe, G3FIJ, has also been awarded an MBE. He received the honour in recognition of services to disabled people and to the community in Colchester, Essex. Frank was founder member and the first chairman of the North-east Essex REMAP, a group of engineers and health workers who design and manufacture equipment to increase the independence of the disabled. G3FIJ has also, for many years, provided tuition for partially sighted, blind and wheelchairbound candidates for the City and Guilds RAE and RSGB Morse Code test. He has taught RAE and Morse courses for more than 40 years, and was a founder member of the Colchester Radio Amateurs club. Congratulations to Frank on this well-deserved honour. The rules for the RSGB 100 Years of Amateur Radio Awards were published in the January RadCom. Those interested in the VHF / UHF award should note that repeater and packet contacts will not be allowed. This is consistent with all other RSGB VHF/UHF awards. Mike Voss, GW8ERA, has resigned from the RSGB Repeater Management Committee for personal and health reasons. Mike has served with great distinction on the RMC for a considerable time, and had added other key roles to his responsibilities for repeater matters in Wales. His expertise and contribution to the technical work of the committee will be hard to replace. If any active radio amateur living in Wales is interested in joining the RMC as Mike's replacement, they are invited to contact the chairman Chris Goadby, G8HVV, for an informal discussion of the duties and responsibilities of the role. G8HVV's address is correct in the RSGB Yearbook. And now a note for your diary: the RSGB National VHF Convention takes place on Sunday the 22nd of February at its usual venue, Sandown Exhibition Centre, Esher in Surrey. Full details, including a timetable of the VHF lecture streams, can be found in the February RadCom. Further details can also be obtained by Calling Marcia Brimson, 2E1DAY, at RSGB HQ on 01707 659015. Solar flux levels increased from 91 on the 20th to 108 by the 25th. The average was 96 units. The 90 day solar flux average on the 25th was 97, one unit up on last week. X-Ray flux levels declined slightly to A7.4 on the 22nd, but increased to B1.2 by the 25th as the sun became more active. The average was A9.9. Geomagnetic activity was 'quiet', except on the 20th and the 25th when activity increased to just 'unsettled'. The average Ap was 6 units. Solar wind speeds varied between 270 and 420 kilometres per second for the period from the 12th to the 18th of January. Particle densities varied between 2 and 10 particles per cubic centimetre, except late on the 15th, when for a short time they increased to 20. Bz hovered around zero nanoTeslas throughout. Now the ionospheric data for the period from the 16th to the 22nd of January. The F2 daytime critical frequencies at Juliusruh varied between 6.8MHz and 7.4MHz. The average was 7.1MHz. The darkness hour lows declined slightly from 2.1MHz on the 18th, to 1.6MHz by the 21st. The average was 1.9MHz. Daytime highs were between 0900 and 1300 UTC. The darkness hour lows were between 1800 and 2300 UTC every day, except on the 16th, 19th and 23rd, when they were at 0600 UTC. And now the solar forecast. This week the quiet side of the sun is expected to be looking our way. Solar activity should be at very low levels. Solar flux levels are expected to decline, and be in the 80s. Geomagnetic activity maybe 'unsettled' for the next couple of days, after which activity is expected to decline to 'quiet' levels. MUFs during daylight hours at equal latitudes are expected to be about 23MHz for the south and 20MHz for the north. The darkness hour lows will be about 7MHz. Paths this week to India are expected to have a maximum working frequency with a 50 per cent success rate of 25MHz. However, the optimum working frequency with a 90 per cent success rate will be about 20MHz. The best time to try this path will be 0800 and 1100 UTC. All times used in this report are UTC. And that's the end of the solar information.
