So you have to buy two radios, and pay GK> taxes twice? I'm afraid that if you want to be legal, the answer is "Yes" if you want to operate both Maritime mobile Ham and Marine band. I can't say for any other countries, but in the U.S. and posessions, a radio transmitter MUST, according to FCC regs, be type accepted for the service it's being used in. The only exception is that Ham radios used in the Amateur service do not require type acceptance IF it was built by the Ham. Using a business band radio which has been converted to a Ham band is legal for Ham use, but is no longer legal for the business band service unless it has been converted back by someone holding a GRMS. (formerly 1st or 2nd class Radiotelephone), license. I believe the reason for this is that in the amteur radio service the licensed operator (Ham) is responsable for the proper operation of the transmitter due to being legally, (if not technically) qualified to ensure that it's operating within specs. But a Ham is ONLY qualified to work on Ham gear, unless they also hold a GMRS, license and can certify that the radio meets origional specs. On the other foot, the chances of getting caught using the same radio on both bands are rather slim. KQ6TG DE KB9QPM 73 ES SEASONS GREETINGS Ivy ... I guess I will have to ask one of the local sysops to please add it to the bbs system. I wish a Slow Scan echo was up and running too.. Slow scan TV is getting very popular again. Computers are making the cost to do it very cheap. I use a program called PROSKAN and a cheap rs232 interface like the one for HAMCOM (RTTY PROGRAM) and send 16 million color pic's on 14.230 and 14.233 (20 Meters). The interface I built for 20 bucks worth of Radio Shack parts.. Took me about 3 hrs to build with about 22 parts. Very simple to build. Proskan can be downloaded from the inter net just do a search for SSTV and you will find all kinds of new software. It's one thing to talk to someone in Europe or the what was the USSR but its another to see who your working and to do it in Hi-Resolution. It's one of the funest aspects of Ham Radio I have ran into yet! It really works great over 2 meter FM. Closed circuit type pictures with no snow. Still very little with even HF. I work 10,15,20,40 & 80 meter Slow Scan. I am a General class.. 73's and hope Santa brought you lots of things for the shack!
