My name is JA> Jody Albuquerque. I used to be on the CB when I was in high school. JA> The CB was OK for a while, but there are too many limitations and too JA> much fighting. That has driven a lot of people away from CB and into Ham radio. Welcome! JA> I always wanted to get my license for Amateur Radio, but I never got JA> around to it. The same thing happened to me. I wanted to get a Ham ticket for many years before I finally got busy and sat down and learned what I needed to know and got the license. JA> I bought a book last week to help me study for the exam. Which book did you get? JA> The book gives you the question and an explanation of JA> the correct answer. I like the book and it's great for studying for a JA> test, but I would like to find a book that goes into more detail. If JA> anybody knows of such a book I would appreciate it if you could tell me JA> the title and the author so that I could order a copy. The best thing I can tell you is to go to your local Radio Shack and pick up a copy of "Now You're Talking, which is published by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL). This study guide will answer practically any question you may have about getting either a Novice or Technician Plus license, and if you can receive Morse Code at 5WPM you can get a Tech Plus license. There is also another book - which I personally prefer - called "Technician No-Code Plus" by Gordon West. It does not have as much on the history of Ham radio and other unnecessary info as the ARRL book, however I believe that the answers are explained better in West's book. Either of these editions can be purchased at Radio Shack for around $10.00 apiece. If you don't have a Radio Shack nearby, you can contact the ARRL at the following address: ARRL Educational Dept. 225 Main St. Newington CT 06111-1494 Or call 1-800-32-NEW-HAM (1-800-326-3942) E-mail: ead@arrl.org or http://www.arrl.org The Gordon West school, which specializes in teaching people what they need to know to get a Ham license, doesn't show their address in the book, but you could probably buy a copy from the publisher: Master Publishing, Inc. 7107 N. Ridgeway Ave. Lincolnwood, IL, 60645-2621 E-mail: MasterPubl@aol.com JA> Does anybody JA> know where I could go to take the test that is local to Rhode Island. JA> I tried to call the ARRL, but the operator said that the number had JA> been changed. Does anybody have their new number or address so that I JA> could give them a call. See above. JA> Also, does anybody know any place in RI, or close by, where I could JA> go to buy books and equipment or any good mail order companies. There are dozens of mail order companies which will be happy to sell you Ham gear, and at least one of them probably has a store near you, however I suggest that you try to contact a Ham in your area: Ask your SysOp. He is a Ham, and can probably point you to a local Ham club. From there you will be able to locate a local source for Ham equipment. They will also be able to tell you when and where you can take your licensing tests and may even have a class you can attend. You will probably also find an older Ham who is willing to take you under his/her wing and help you get started in Ham radio, answering any questions you may have, help you set up your first station, and anything else you may need to get started. These helpful Hams are called Elmers. Find an Elmer and things will be much easier for you. JA> I'd appreciate any information and I hope to be talking to all of JA> you on the air soon. Addresses above, but I suggest that you check your local Radio Shack if there is one in your neighborhood. While you're at Radio Shack, ask for a copy of their catalog. They do carry Ham radio equipment. If they don't have it in the store, they can usually get anything in the catalog within a couple of days. They are not the lowest-cost source for Ham gear, but most of their stuff is pretty good. If you are interested in setting up a low-cost station, (a new rig with all the bells and whistles can cost well over $2,000!), consider used equipment. It is possible to set up a good station for under $100. JA> Thanks My pleasure. I hope to work you on the air one day soon! 73 ES Seasons greetings DE KB9QPM (Translation: Best Regards and Season's Greetings from KB9QPM) Ivy ...
