"Hi Eldon, So tell me, just how does one self-police a neighborhood full of RF-susceptible consumer electronic devices? I'm at a loss as to how this relates to the context of the discussion." Hello Jeff, You raise a very good question. Can any oldtimers in this echo bestow upon Jeff what procedure was considered the "norm" back in Amateur Radio's "good ole days" to track down RFI and/or wayward individuals with illegal equipment who caused H&D in neighborhoods all across America? I seem to remember a little gettogether called a "foxhunt". I also seem to recall my old "Elmer" telling me something about, let's see now, offering to assist the neighbors in eliminating RFI (or TVI, as it was called then). It appears to me that what used to be considered a "public service" by local Hams is now considered (or NOT considered at all) to be too much of a bother! As to your reference to "context of the discussion", care to render some examples? I still say that Sworn personnel have much better things, more IMPORTANT things to do than responding to low-level complaints by Ms. Murphy that Henry the Ham or Chuck the Chickenbander is disrupting her watching Erika Kane's latest escapades on "All My Children"! 73's and Happy Holidays, Elden --- Maximus 2.02 * Origin: KA3HSW/Wheaton Community Radio Amateurs BBS (1:115/668) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 135 AMATEUR RADIO Ref: EGG00001 Date: 12/11/97 From: IVY IVERSON Time: 04:57am \/To: DONALD BOWERS (Read 5 times) Subj: HV Safety -=> On 12-09-97 22:43, Donald Bowers said to Ivy Iverson,<=- -=>"About HV Safety...,"<=- Hi, Donald; II>there, and with my hands in control panels carrying live 480 VAC 3-phase II>many times a day, I had to be on my toes every second! If you think DB> Gee, I wonder what OSHA would have to say about this.... :-) It had to be done, and we are specially trained to be able to work on such circuits while hot... anyone else who is caught with their hands in a panel is fired on the spot! After all, do you think a TV repair person could diagnose the problem with your color TV, (with 24,000 volts running around), without taking it out of the cabinet? Or if your gallon linear has low output, are you going to be able to say if it's the tube(s) or a leaky capacitor or a charred resistor that is causing the problem without opening it up? (And if a resistor gets fried, what caused it?) Not very likely. The ONLY way to diagnose the problem in a machine tool control panel is get inside it with a VOM, (with an amprobe attachment), and see what isn't happening that should. Commercial broadcasting transmitters have enough meters that you can read practically every function in the system and usually spot a change which indicates imminant failure so a reopair can be made before you have a catastrophic failuer, however most Ham gear is not so thorougly metered. You have to be able to take voltage and current readings with it turned on, but you have to be damn careful that you don't hit the wrong wire! In most cases you can take a few voltage readings in the suspected stage and apply Ohm's Law to isolate the defective component(s), but in machine tool controls, the signal to activate a single solonoid might have to go through contacts on 10 or 15, even 20 different relays. It could be a dirty or burned contact, or a limit switch that is worn out, or a broken wire somewhere, and the ONLY way to find it is with voltage measurements while it is in operation.
