You got the point. ;-) So you might suggest registering by credit card, but another problem arises then. A credit card is not commonly used here in Europe (usually only by the few high income people (and those wanting to be regarded as such )). Many of the Americans (shareware authors being among them) don't realize this. >RB> On the other hand, some registration sites add extreme fees for > themselves, >RB> which further cuts down the willing to register. > > Is this prevalent? I don't know. It is what I discovered quite some years ago, so maybe this policy has changed lately. At that time I looked at the prices of some of the major shareware programs in US$ and the amounts mentioned by the reg site here in The Netherlands in their advertisements. From that time on I decided to make up my BBS with freeware only and to develop my own utilities (freeware too, but I'm not actively promoting them) for the missing parts. The only commercial product I'm using now is my Fidonet mailer program (Dutchie), but as a beta tester I even got that one for free. ;-) Cheers, Roelof Beverdam e-mail: r.beverdam@a1.nl --- Dutchie V3.10.11 * Origin: The Beaver's Nest (2:500/218) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 134 SHAREWARE Ref: F3E00021 Date: 03/08/98 From: STEVE STACHER Time: 11:19pm \/To: JIM HANOIAN (Read 3 times) Subj: Registration Hi Jim, how are you? On 07-Mar-98, Jim Hanoian was avidly discussing Registration with Roelof Beverdam RB>> On the other hand, some registration sites add extreme fees for RB>> themselves, which further cuts down the willing to register. JH> Is this prevalent? I don't think so. Most of those are commercial registration sites, ie businesses. A number of US authors are represented by either The Thompson Partnership or Atlantic Coast Software. I find the latter have prices closer to the US price whereas The Thompson Partnership costs are much higher. Granted there is duty and VAT but I have always found it cheaper going to the author directly. Now, a lot of authors can't accept plastic and that is a major problem. I think that the internet will make things easier and cheaper. >> How is the upcoming Eurocurrency going to affect you? RB>> The masses still don't care. Only a few people think about it with RB>> mixed feelings. We see the advantages, but the danger of membership RB>> of countries with a less stable currency sometimes worries us. Vers 5.4 is available! Active UUCP Interface ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You can have NEWSGROUPS in your BBS echo bases for your callers, E-Mail to any InterNet address, or run a Newsgroup <> EchoMail network. It's a handy way to add some profit to your system. All you need to do is exchange packets with an InterNet provider using UUCP or PPP and Act-Up takes care of the rest. Act-Up is an interface program to reformat messages between any Fido network and InterNet. Compatibility with almost any BBS message base is achieved by creating packets any Fido mailer or tosser can process. D'Bridge, FrontDoor and BinkleyTerm styles of operation are supported. Messages for InterNet are placed in UUCP deliverable archives and packets. Act-Up's configuration is completely menu driven with on-line help for each of the 60+ options. The new Act-POP utility (ACT-POP.ZIP) converts POP3 and SMTP packets back and forth to the UUCP format so you are not limited to UUCICO type transfers. You can provide multi-user access to InterNet via a POP/PPP account. KA9Q/NOS and UKA_PPP are supported. The heading lines of the InterNet messages, which are not required by Fido systems, are removed so the text of the messages is less cluttered. Any Fido system messages destined for InterNet have the appropriate InterNet heading lines created. Instead of BBS message posters always having to put a To: line at the top of the message text, Act-Up maintains address lists. Only when an address Act-Up has not seen is desired, is the To: line needed. When replying, it's not necessary to use a To: line in the text. If you are hubbing InterNet for a network, Act-Up also remembers node numbers and only caller names are needed on E-Mail messages coming from InterNet. Act-Up is designed to make InterNet as transparent as possible to the BBS caller. Support includes NetMail File Attaches and Return Receipts. For those BIG messages the InterNet folks like to post, Act-Up will archive them as ZIP files and make them available for file request. The latest versions increase processing speed, store an unlimited number of InterNet and Network addresses, and can cover over 15,000 Newsgroups. All new versions allow running Act-Up in the demonstration mode. Cancel and Moderator options are available for registered users on request. Act-Up is written from the Fido system operator's perspective and runs in the DOS mode on a 286 or better. Act-Up can multi-task and runs happy in a DOS window for Windows, DesqView, OS2, or LAN networked platforms. A demonstration copy of Act-Up and what's needed for UUCICO may be requested from the BBS systems below using the magic word ACT-UP. Request ACT-UP.DOC for just the documentation. Act-Up does check messages from InterNet for other demonstration keys. Your own Key File is required for full unattended operation. Keys are only $25.00. I'll send your key and the latest version of Act-Up direct to your system as soon as I receive the order form. Ŀ Christopher G.
