My TN Ivie's began with Benjamin and Elizabeth (__________) who came from VA to Gibson Co by 1840, where they remained until their death in 1850's and 1860's. They were probably from Brunswick Co, VA. Her name was probably Elizabeth Jackson who married a Benjamin in July 1816. I believe that Benjamin was actually Benjamin III, son of Benjamin, Jr. (who probably lived in Rutherford Co, and died there), the son of Benjamin, Sr. of Brunswick Co My Benjamin (III?) and Elizabeth had the following children: William Henry (married Nancy Moore); Tabitha Virginia (Married Charles Edwards); Mary Ann (married John Hallyburton[sic]); Enoch G. (married Elizabeth Wade); Richard (died young, unmarried); James (died young, unmarried). Do you have any information on this family, particularly anything which would indicate this Benjamin is indeed Benjamin III? And it does. I've missed all that went before this, as Net 102 has been down since 12/31/97. So I don't want to be misunderstood. But here goes. We all have our own likes and dislikes, personal experiences and intuitiveness. I've had some experience managing those. As an aerospace systems analyst for many years, I wrote flight test software that had to be fail-safe and whose operation was to be as intuitive as possible. Too many lives and dollars were at stake to be other than resonable, rational and logical. Every time I introduced new software in the training system, my 6 operators would spend the first few days trying to crash the system. At first they succeeded, but I learned all their tricks and errors over time and could then build rock solid systems. As chairman of two users groups, I've evaluated every genealogical program I can find, anywhere. Some of those which I think will surely drive anyone crazy turned out to be loved by others. In my opinion too many of the programs are artsy, cutesy types that focus on the bottom line, not genealogy, not genealogists. To me, those are the crazy maker types. I've often thought that, gee I could write THE genealogical program. Then I realize I haven't time for that. I want to get my family history documented. So, I let the publishers know of major goofs (which are often ignored) and just keep chugging along. Lenard Mc Donald ... CS> Oh, boy! NEVER tell me or Richard PENCE you welcome comments! You CS> may be reading thistime next year. (G) Write on...you'll have an avid reader in me as I welcome advice.:) CS> OK, David vs Daniel: Actually I am quite well-versed in Spencerian penmanship: a skill I _never_ thought I'd use! But I'm also having to deal with sources in their 80's who have a family history of senile dementia. Treading delicately when I have to confirm anything, my dearest g-aunt had me searching all the local cemetaries for a relative who as it turns out died in another state. Unfortunately, My grandmother just doesn't remember and she's in her 70's. So as far as the information I've gleaned from my sources, it is suspect too. Add to that the fact that the family is split into factions over heaven knows what, and the fact that my closest relatives number about six (four of whom are 70+) and you have me, a very confused woman trying to sort out the suspect information from people (Lord bless them for trying) who may be a marble or two short. About census readability: The particular census' I've been consulting are the second filming and not _too_ unreadable. Are the first filmings _more_ readable? Also at the history center here the fiche does not list any census before 1850. Are these not available? What do I do when I am looking for someone at that time period? About age discrepancies: I figured that there might be a one to three year discrepancy in ages, I just coundn't find her name when we figured she should be with the family of 18 children. My ancestress was named Missouri Ann Watson, but no even slightly similar names were found (not unless Nancy is similar?). I did find her as an adult under the name of Sally with her husband and first child (and then ONLY because there were no other James HOBBS with only a one year old child named Frank). But my sources who knew her don't recall anyone calling her by that name. I'm beginning to think I'm chasing a red herring. My sources swear up and down that her father's name was Daniel (yes the same sources commented on above). About names: I also figured there would be discrepancies concerning names. I've been following a line that has been enumerated as ROBERTSON, ROBERSON, and now ROBINSON. Oh yes, let's not forget my sources who said that it was either ROBESON or ROBERSON. CS> GIVEN NAMES: CS> Woman's name is Florence Belle; she uses Belle; enumerator MAY write CS> down both names, but he may just write Florence. And consistency did CS> not appear to be virtuous to most enumerators: my GGM is enumerated CS> with both first and middle names spelt in full, while her sister is CS> given with only her nickname. Man is known as Dock, but his name is CS> Edward, and if the enumerator is doing good by the genealogist, he'll CS> put both, but generally, he just puts Dock and the poor genealogist is CS> left kissing a lot of frogs looking for Edward on that census! CS> (And in 1860, you get Dock on the original, but D. on the 3rd copy!) I'm confused. I thought the films were of the original census? I noticed on one that the enumerator would start his day writing full names but along about the middle of the day would start just writing the full name for the head of family then initials for family members. Are these instead films of copies? I am most happy that you took the time to reply to my query. You have given me hope that I may not be wasting my time with red herrings. I've been using the census' to try to figure out if her folks were where the surviving siblings have placed them, but I'm having a bit of dificulty. First I thought I had found the D. Watson (with a good portion of his reported 18 children still living with him), but when I got the next earlier census he had the wrong name (David instead of Daniel). The wife has the correct name as does one of the known younger siblings (she was retarded and stayed with her mother: they both are buried close by), but I can't seem to connect any of the given initials with the specific daughter I'm descended from. Not only that but the year of birth that we have may be wrong. Just HOW accurate are the census reports? I know that on another line I've encountered four different spellings for the same last name. The only reason that I'm sure about that line being mine is that the person's name is rather unusual and they occupied the same piece of property for 30 years. Also, just how prevalent was undercounting? I welcome any comments or advice. Jean Halverson ...
