I'm down under in Australia and don't have access to either of the sites shown above. However I'm lead to beleive two brothers of my GGF left Ireland and migrated to America and ended up on opposite sides in the Civil War. I'm looking for directions on how and were I would start looking for records that will assist me. All I know at this time is "Two brothers (first names unknown) with the surname LARMER" Is there a central register of names, books with lists or records that I can access from Australia. Looking for directions Regards Ian. ... Two blokes walked into a bar. Greetings from Dixie, Ian! First, do you have access to one of the Latter Day Saints' (Mormons) Family History centers? This is probably the best and cheapest way to get access to the microfilm of the compiled service records of Civil War veterans. There are compiled indexes of at least the Confederate veterans by state. I have a copy of the one for Arkansas, sadly there's no one listed between Private John B. LARKINS of Bullard's Ark. Infantry and Private W.E. LAROQUE of Co. E, 37th Arkansas Infantry. Broadfoot Publishing has very recently released a 17-volume compiled index of all Confederate soldiers who have a compiled service record, bu they're very proud of it... at about $3,000 per set :-( Fortunately the regional library here in Little Rock has a copy in their genealogy room, and I'll go check it out on my next trip over there. As for online resources, there's not a whole lot, and especially not a compiled database of all the soldiers yet. The National Park Service is working on one when last I heard, you might try http://www.nps.gov and browse for their Soldiers and Sailor's Index System. I posted a tutorial in the echo here a couple of weeks ago titled "HOW TO FIND YOUR CIVIL WAR ANCESTOR". If you missed this one, let me know, and I'll try to get you a copy. Another avenue to approach is to contact the headquarters of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) at http://www.scv.org, or the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War at http://www.suvcw.org and click on the links there to "Genealogical Resources". Both groups have a network of genealogists to help new and prospective members to get their family tree and applications to the groups in order. Hope this helps a little, and if you're interested inthe "HOW TO..." file, holler back and I'll try to get you a copy Down Under. Confederately yours, Tom Ezell Gen'l R.C.
