The other Mike's family was from VA. If you're a descendant of Nicholas HOLT then you and I are cousins, cuz I'm descended from him, too. We might be distant cousins, but nevertheless we may have other lines in common. FARNHAM, SHORT, COLBURN, etc.?? Yes, it does seem there are2 Mike Holts, but by reading the messages where ancestors are mentioned we can sort them out. Yes, Fidonet folks are much more sophisticated. I have the same opinion as you do about 'angry" people hanging out on the Net just waiting for a chance to come in and "flame" somebody or spam the works. I got flamed for using a "secondary source" there, as if there were no value in secondary sources. I've yet to read any genealogy which uses only primary sources. If such an one exists, I'd like to know where. Well Mikes....both of you.....Happy New Year and keep on surfing Fidonet, cuz 1998 is the year for a resurgence of interest and participation here. I'm descended from him. I first met John Brumble in Robeson Co., NC and when I couldn't seem to find his trail, I read that Brumble was a form of Brumbelow. It was Brumbelow just shortened to Brumble. I did later find them in Missouri and Illinois, but still using the Brumble spelling. Do you suppose your wife's female ancestor could have been going by the surname of Brumble in Tenn. ? I will keep an eye out for any Brumbelow's in Tn for you. You were 16 when I was born, it seems. Glad I found genealogy, cuz I find I'm related to a lot of nice people. What a priviledge!! Happy New Year, Dick and also to your family. Those wishing more information on protocols, practices and effective use of this echo are invited to locate NGCPROTn.TXT, which gives guidance and hints. It is available for download or F'Req from the NGS BBS and has been distributed through GSDS to many other BBSs. 1. MESSAGE CONTENT. Messages must pertain to the general topic area of genealogy and all of its facets. High message flow in the Conference dictates that this rule be firmly enforced. Although messages involving genealogy software are permitted here, you are encouraged to use the GENSOFT echo for them. 2. OFF-LINE READERS, ARCHIVERS AND OTHER NON-GENEALOGICAL UTILITIES. Do not discuss these topics in this echo. In most cases your questions can quickly be answered in a local echo. 3. DUPLICATE MESSAGES. Messages entered in another genealogy- related echo are not to be repeated in this echo. Select which of the echoes you think is best suited to your needs. 4. "SIGNATURE" LINES AND "TAG" LINES. End of message lines listing surnames being searched are limited to NO MORE than three lines and should not be included in more than one message each day. Do not include unnecessary "decorations" in signature lines. "Tag" or "tear" lines are discouraged in this echo and in FidoNet in general because these can cause operating abnormalities for some BBS software. If you MUST use a tagline, don't include political, controversial or derogatory comments. 5. COMMERCIAL MESSAGES. Users who offer a product or service for sale may not use this conference to promote their interests. One-time or infrequent announcements of new software products or books are acceptable, as are reasonable responses to questions to vendors. Negotiations for payment for genealogical research or fee quotations for research or other products are prohibited, except for reasonable requests for reimbursement of expenses. Announcements and information about or by nonprofit genealogical or computer groups are welcome. Book reviews or "testimonials" by disinterested parties are also welcome. 6. HANDLES. Use of handles or aliases on this echo are prohibited. Surnames are the lifeblood of genealogical research. If a person refuses to use his or her real name, then he or she really isn't that anxious to participate. 7. The use of visible ASCII (control) characters numbered 32 and below is prohibited in this echo. Use of eight-bit characters above 127 are permitted, subject to the following: a. Use only characters necessary to genealogical messages. These include box characters ( , etc.) for making charts and foreign alphabet characters (, , , , ,). b. DO NOT use such characters to create "cutesy" quote boxes, multi-line signatures, nor for purely decorative purposes. Use of such characters in "tear" or "tag" lines and Origin lines is PROHIBITED. c. This rule will remain in effect unless we get reports of system disruptions or in the event of a change in Fidonet technical standards. Please notify the moderators of any difficulties encountered because of the use of these characters. 8. COMMENTS OR COMPLAINTS. Please allow the moderators to address violations of these rules. If you have a comment or complaint, send a NetMail message to the conference moderators at the NetMail or USPS address below.
